Let me tell you my experience : When a customer ask for a 'semi-pro' digicam, don't take him for a fool by showing him a Canon Powershot or IXUS series, show him a EOS series instead, like a 30D or 400D for starters (I am sure you get more commission selling those than a Powershot for goodness' sake!) If he refuses and say it's difficult to use then deny everything and show him how EASY it is to operate the EOS and give him your best offer for the camera. People like this are usually potential EOS owners but lack SLR knowledge, so it's YOUR job to teach him how to use the camera and make his Ringgit worth.

The part I hate most is this : The customer walks in and SPECIFICALLY asked for a Nikon camera with so-and-so budget. When I showed him a (then) Nikon D50 he starts his bla bla bla with Sony, Canon and Olympus DSLR like he's got the cash to buy everything on my shelf, so ... you know very well he's gonna walk out the shop with a Nikon in his hand but he is just wasting your time with all his "I know cameras more than you" lecture. My strategy was this : Tell him SOMETHING that the camera he specifically asked for has that the REST doesn't, in this case it was Nikon's D-Lighting Technology, which I am sure Canon or Sony, etc. do not adopt. 10 - 20 minutes down the line and he is your happy paying customer, knowing very well he bought a UNIQUE camera compared to the rest. These kinda people wants to be unique, he knows what he want so he went asking here and there, ended up all confused before he entered your shop. It's YOUR job to straigthen him but first you must know your cameras well. What he wanted was a Nikon camera, the rest are just hear-say ...
