Anyone wonder how public university in malaysia have high ranking as compare to other oversea famous university? Is it really that case? For example base on qs world university ranking, University of malaya ranked 59 is somehow higher than famous University like Brown University, University of Wisconsin Madison, university of Warwick, UT Austin, NTU (Taiwan) and Uwashington. I wonder is it true and should we trust them? Feel free to give your opinion.

Ranking based on journal produce, research are made not about quality of teaching at that university

Also, nUS is the highest ranking Asian Uni.... Beating Peking and Jepunis .

How are public university in malaysia conducting more research than famous/prestigious university oversea? I mean they are consider top tier school.

Conducting more research which doent have impact, probably the thesis will be throw to garbage can in just one years.

High rank nobody trusy, whem low rank said rubbish uni. It’s ok to go with high number of journal and slowly moving towards quality instead of lack of journal

Yupe! Some universities spam their ranking with thesis etc.

And some (if not a lot of) these theses are written by undergraduates who hired ghost writers...

QS Rankings are lousy.

For overall world rankings, I suggest using TIMES.

Don't take rankings too seriously. You cannot convince me that NUS is better than UCLA, UW, UMich and many more. Focus not just on the academic side, but also the alumni network and your social life. Frankly, for undergraduate program, many universities have more or less the same quality despite the big difference in ranking. What's going to set you apart is recognition, networking, etc.

One last thing to note - if you're looking solely at US universities, I highly recommend US News rankings over anything. My undergraduate school USC is far better than many many US schools here, but they're not ranked that well in world rankings if you see TIMES or QS. USC is one of the top tier schools in US and their alumnis. Check out how many award winners have graduated from here. The alumni network is perhaps the best in US (comparable to Harvard?).

But when you see my graduate school Columbia University which is an Ivy League school, it is ranked insanely good in TIMES and QS, but they're not ranked too well in local rankings by US News. In fact, you could check acceptance rate and see that USC has insanely low acceptance rate - lower than many Ivy League schools too.

edit: Oh yes don't forget on subject rankings too. Harvard > CMU but CMU CS >> Harvard CS

Then what rank will be believable? 599th? 1,000th?

It's good thing our public unis constantly ranked higher, and it's not just in QS ranking only. UM always ranked among Top 200 from decades ago so does UKM/USM/UPM/UTM which always ranked among Top 500. So this latest ranking is not really surprising at all.

I guess most people who butthurt are the overseas graduates which their unis are not even listed in Top 500 or Top 1000.

Publication. Malaysia go high in rank because of lots of publication.

If you are looking for a course, don't look at university ranking, but course ranking. Similarly, if looking for supervisor, forget ranking. Just some people want to benchmark all uni. Thats all
