GEORGE TOWN: Eating rice with the hand involves the adroit use of the thumb to slide rice soaked in sauce on the fingers into the mouth, says former president of Consumers International Datuk Anwar Fazal.

“I take all international visitors I host for vegetarian rice on banana leaf in Penang Gandhi Ashram.

“I give them a short lesson on how to eat with your hands in 10 easy steps, ” he said when presented with “advice” from self-proclaimed English etiquette expert Grant Harrold on how to eat rice.

Harrold, a former butler of Prince Charles and his sons, told his Twitter followers on March 6 to “remember we always use knife and fork or chopsticks to eat rice. We do not use our hands or fingers (sic).”

Anwar responded: “The only rice he can eat like that are perhaps ketupat or chicken rice balls.

“The art and science of eating developed differently in various civilisations. The earliest is the use of hands, followed by chopsticks and then cutlery, ” Anwar said.

Malaysian culinary maestro Chef Wan, also known as is Redzuawan Ismail, had even stronger words.

“Don’t bodohly (foolishly) follow white people’s thinking. Rice is a grain. It’s not like pasta you can catch with a fork, ” he said.

As far as eating utensils are concerned, Chef Wan said the spoon was “plain common sense and so convenient” to eat rice with.

“Asian cuisine is full of gulai (curries). If you only have a fork and knife, how are you going to scoop all that without a spoon?

“We have our culture too. There’s no right or wrong. If some of us love to eat rice with the hand, then it’s ok too. Don’t be so rigid, ” he said.

Thousands of people worldwide scoffed at Harrold’s view on how to eat rice.

i can eat fried rice with only chopsticks.

But the gross thing is when they use the same hand, to take dish from the main shared plate.... Especially when eating fish or whole chicken where they peeling time will touch the whole chicken.

on the topic of eating rice with hand, i actually asked a Malay friend about the reason behind it. She explained that if the food is too hot (temperature wise) to hold, then it is not suitable to put into your mouth. kind of make sense...

The traditional Chinese way of eating rice with chopstick is also eating with a small bowl, they scoop up the rice with chopstick while holding the rice bowl close to the mouth.

Since most chinese nowadays uses dish to place their rice and do not hold up the dish next to their mouth, it doesn't make sense to try eating rice with chopstick anymore.

Why need to test food temperature with hand when you can also observe the food with eyes if it is "steamy" hot? You don't eat with hand and how many times did your tongue got burned as a result? None right?

The risk of getting burnt by food is when drinking soup when one is not careful. Last I check nobody test soup temperature with bare hands also....

i dont understand all this fuss, with some people even going as far as to say some methods are best.

'civilised' people will know that the proper conduct (for a guest) is to graciously adapt to whatever method their host prefers. if an asian host invites you to eat dinner with fork and spoon, do so. if a western host invites you to eat dinner with your hands, do so. if someone invites you to eat using nothing but your elbows, you do so.

the purpose of learning how to use cutlery (or any other method of eating) is for the guest to adapt to the host, not the other way round.

I cannot stand the sight of gravy wet hands, oily and the bits of rice still on the hand makes it worse. Yucks.

The main concern is hygiene, germs and dirt easily hid in the fingernails gap and almost impossible to clean thoroughly. Food soaked with gravy make it even more likely for the germs in the fingernails to travel onto your food and into your mouth.

I have friend who's a Chinese who grew up near the Kampung. She can use hand and chopstick but say rice taste better with hands.

Pizza not soaked in gravy though unlike ppl eating rice with curry/gravy. The liquid gravy make it easy for germs in your fingernails to get into your food and mouth.

when I was in china, those chinaman can eat rice on a plate and using 1 single hand by holding the chopticks only (no spoon at all)
