Yes, even when compared to a D40.

Its two totally different genre you are comparing. One is a high-end point and shoot, the other is a DSLR.

If you think the S5 IS is good enough, then no need to waste the RM600++ to get the D40 smile.gif

Ask yourself, do you really want a DSLR?

But then with DSLR you'll invest a lot on the lenses later.

The s5 had what, only three type of lenses?

If you're a beginner and in a tight budget why don't you look at fujifilm s9600. It had very good ratings.

Few years is a long time.

So i think it is ok for you to use any prosumer for a few years and then yearn for a DSLR once you are interested to progress further in this hobby.

The S5 is capable of capturing good shots and you have quite a lot of features to play with as well. You can look around at other cameras in this same genre.

You need to ask yourself further if you need image stabilizer features and 300mm zoom range. The reason is a merely RM600 extra buying a D40 won't get you these features. Prepare to spend additional RM1k to RM1.5k (or more).

If the answer is no and you are happy with a camera without image stabilizer and 35mm to 70mm zoom lens, then I would advice you to get D40.

If you think that 12x zoom will be fun and image stabilizer will be useful, get S5 then.

as the S5 user .. eventhough it is a pro-sumer cam,i can say the outcome from the cam so far doesnt seem to let me down on its abiltity espacially when u shoot outdoor and night.. plus u dont need to think about getting a new lens because in S5 its all there.. and the best part is the super macro modes !! thumbup.gif
retail around rm1.5k + freebies

about D40, it is also a good cam which is good for beginners..my fren use this cammie and the pic quite impressed me..but then, u gotta have a good hand while shoot otherwise ur pic turn out blur bcus it doesnt have a IS support ..need a good handheld and a tripod for a better image..have to spend lotsa cash on getting another lens+equip for ur satisfaction bcus human instinct are always want more..right ?hehe
retail rm 2.2k standard kit .. smile.gif

the s9600 is around rm1500-1800. It's also called s9100 in the US.

Here's a review of it.

I had the same dilemma as you did and I made the mistake initially by buying the Canon S3 last year. After 6 months down the road, I sold the Canon S3 and bought a Nikon D40. The difference is incredible, well mainly in terms of the ability of the camera to further excel yourself. But always make sure that you know what you are getting into, if you do plan to be more serious, then get the Nikon D40. If this is just a partial hobby, the S5 is good enough.

Hmm, between this 2 cams.

I would first ask you whether you need video function or not, if you do, S5 is a good option.

It's nice if you bring a cam for a trip where you can record both pictures and videos. Makes the vacation so much more memorable.

if you are a pro, use digital camera for camera only, use digital camcorder for recording video. haha, but it will cost u to bring lots of things at once.

why dun go for D40X, got more functions, if go to D40X budget, hav EOS350D as a competitor........haha

seems lots complicated later
