I like the last photo the best! The background's colour complement's the flower.

That's easy. Just use the longest focal length that your camera offers, 12x in this case (Canon S3IS), and focus on the flower. Use F5.6 or smaller to keep most part of the flower in focus.

I try to use F5.6 because it's been claimed to be the sweet spot, although there's insufficient evidence to proof this theory. Actually it also depends on shutter speed, if the flowers are moving due to wind blow, slow SS won't work.

This is the 100% crop of that shot. Most part are still in focus. I've been saying S3 is a good cam, haven't I? biggrin.gif

I think it's the object. Your flower is wider than mine, so you need a smaller aperture to keep everything in focus.

be careful of the bees....make sure u dont use the wrong fragrances tongue.gif

also about the last pic, maybe a tighter crop (dont show the half cut leaves?) will make it better?

Frankly, not as beautiful as I would have thought. But it really depends on the photographer.

I'm not sure... maybe. The reason of including that leaf is to have a "S" curve. If I crop that out, it will be very boring as it becomes "f" already. Basically I seldom crop my shot as I try my best to compose it properly before pressing the shutter. Post process is important, but very often it can't fix a bad photo.
