You don't need to keep to that angle when taking flower shot. Try taking from the side, use the max focal length, blur out the rest (including leaves) and only showing the flower in focus.

Check this out, a very normal flower, but the presentation is speechless:

The dull the better. You just need a uniform blur BG. Try it next time and you'll be surprise. One more thing, I was told that the best time of the day taking flowers is in the morning and evening. The light is so warm and you will get a very nice colour. Noon time is bad, unless it's going to rain or after a rain.

Actually the higher the zoom, the nicer the bokeh. If you check out the photos taken by that Jap dude, notice that most photos with his 70-300mm lens.

Don't need to find macro lens yet to get good bokeh, your kit lens can do just fine at the moment tongue.gif Need to really crawl on the dirt hehehe.

The crop isn't tight enough becaure there are still subjects in the picture that detracts the viewer from the main focus.

A bunch of leaves on the right hand side of Pic.6 and some loose twigs (could be moved before picture taking?)

I am not a fan of a lot of empty space unless it serves a purpose ie to give a feel of the environment or artistic reasons

Since the flowers are shot in your garden, I guess you can crop it close to the flowers leaving very little empty space. Just my two cents smile.gif

Continue shooting! Will love to see more of your work smile.gif

Composition, contrast, white balance, levels, hue, saturation ..........

QUOTE(zio @ Aug 28 2007, 10:47 AM)
The crop isn't tight enough becaure there are still subjects in the picture that detracts the viewer from the main focus.

A bunch of leaves on the right hand side of Pic.6 and some loose twigs (could be moved before picture taking?)

I am not a fan of a lot of empty space unless it serves a purpose ie to give a feel of the environment or artistic reasons

Since the flowers are shot in your garden, I guess you can crop it close to the flowers leaving very little empty space. Just my two cents smile.gif

Continue shooting! Will love to see more of your work smile.gif

ok thanks for the edvice...how bout my new shots?is the crop tight enough?

You see, I told you so. The first 2 photos looks much more better. Uniform and blur BG is what you need to make your flower stand out. However, you must have used a wide aperture (can't verify since your jpeg doesn't have Exif data), since your DOF is kinda too narrow. Try using a smaller aperture, F8 or even smaller.

hm... i somebody in the last few posts told me to blur everything even the leaves...so i thought of getting a nice bokeh...so i didnt think of anything straight set to f5.6... the third flower shot was f7 or 8 i think...but it was so windy i used high shutter speed...

I hope you now understand that, talking, and doing, are two VERY different thing. Nothing wrong with commenting on others' work, but you talked more than Simon in American Idol. An old saying, if you have nothing better to say, don't say it.

Only 2 pictures in post #48 are properly exposed. #2 and #5. Here are some tips for you

1) if you are shooting a subject with BRIGHT background, either meter the subject closely by excluding the bright background out of the frame, or use spot on the subject. That will properly expose the subject but blow out the background. Alternatively, the best solution is to use fill flash. Meter the background, lock EV, then power up ur flash to fill the subject. This method is obviously not feasible if u are shooting in a large area with very bright sky.

2) When you are shooting subject with lots of whites, at least add in 0.5-0.7 ev compensation (also works with #1). I don't like to go more than 0.7 in case the highlights are blown out. Do the reverse if there is a lot of shadow/black.

proper exposure and lighting is #1 in my book, composition comes second.

Those people were paid to criticize. But as a general rule, it's better not to talk too much, u don't know when u'd step on someone's tail. The point is be moderate.

When i check my lcd, I only check for composition. Learn to take proper exposure without relying on the lcd. The lcd can be deceiving when it comes to exposure.

bro?
can i ask u why do u use manual focus with an AF-S lense?
it can track the object in focus....at least thats waht my lens did...=)...
focus mode i put it in AF-A...i think...it's the one where it can automatically change from single focus to continuous....

single servo af.. hmmm i read from the book.. it keeps focusing even if the object is moving closer to u. Good for panning i guess... and the ai focus thingy, it focuses the object again once it detects the object is moving...

no no no. Sometimes a darker pic might work. Others gave advice, so its up to you to whether wanna follow or not. The only thing in the end is, be true to your own style. smile.gif

You have to experiment more, thats all i can say. smile.gif

If u want a perfect exposure. Take into calculation that certain subjects might fool your sensor. Like a white subject usually fool your sensor for underexposing the image. Dial in a positive exposure compensation like +0.7~+1.0 just to make the whole thing bright enough.

Like that picture i mentioned. Why its under exposed? Maybe because its the whitish background behind which fooled your sensor that your frame is bright enough. smile.gif

depends on what kind of metering you're using. If u use spot metering and you metered on the white spot of the flower, then you should dial in around +0.7-+1.3.

A simple test is use any kind of metering and meter a white piece of paper, without any exposure compensation, take a shot. Then do it again with a +exposure com. smile.gif

Go try it out smile.gif

I found Pic 8 and 19 to be my favorite smile.gif However there are still room for improvement.

Pic 8: Tilt your camera anti-clockwise a little and make a diagonal presentation, and lower EV by 2/3 will make it a nearly perfect shot. The light is harsh due to the strong sun, but I guess that's nothing you can do about it unless you wait. I really like the uniform back ground.

Pic 19: The diagonal presentation made the photo interesting. However you shall not forget the Rule-of-Third. The flower is dead at the center, so it leaves too much space on top. But if you rotate the whole photo 90° clockwise, it will be so much nicer. Try it smile.gif

Don't use AF-A, it's not very reliable and i hate it when sometimes it thinks the subject moved and tries to focus it. If you are taking moving subject, do AF-C, if not, keep it at AF-S.

Malaysia...apa pun tak boleh (this sounds more like it tongue.gif) jk hehe
slightly underexposed btw

look for difficult scenes to shoot. Shoot at odd times when the sky is really bright, then you will quickly get the hang of how much compensation to dial in. All other scenes will then be very easy later biggrin.gif Or....just shoot RAW and fix it in photoshop whistling.gif anyway, good job on the exposure, much better now.

*
er... in that flag pic...what diff would it make if i put at af-s or af-c? please tell me more...i know af-c is for moving and af-s is for still objects..but i dunno whats the diff if the flag was taken in af-s/af-c...thats why lar i say its like no other....you don see other countries making a big deal about somebody modifying the national anthem right.... you don see other country's parliment shouting:" RACIST!!!RACIST!!!" tongue.gif

about the compensation...yeah..it was really tough today as the sun was just above my head... my camera showed almost 90% of my shots having blown out parts...luckily i didnt delete it and transferred it into the computer for further investigation.. lolz...actually it wasnt blown out parts but only white cloud doh.gif will work harder on the exposure next time...thanks notworthy.gif

Dont worry about blown out clouds. It is difficult not to blow up any clouds yet get everything exposed properly. You will need the fuji s5pro/do HDRi/find a VERY nice time to shoot it.

if you selected the left AF point and put it at AF-C and aim at the star for example, it will constantly try to focus on it because the flag is moving, you *might* get sharper picture of the star that way. If you used AF-S, it will focus on the star once and ignore the movements due to the wind. Depending on the aperture used, you might not noticed any difference at all.

Here's a good thing about the D80/D200/D300, there are many many af points all around the viewfinder. What I did when I took my macro shots was to set the camera to AF-C, then use group dynamic focus (u dont have this on D40) and select the group that i want my subject to be in. The I set it to high speed burst. I simply compose the picture and keep my subject within the group af points and it will keep on focusing on the subject. I just had to burst a few shots and pick those that turn out sharp. You need lots of af points to truely exploit the benefits of AF-C. Ok, now go pick up a new camera brows.gif

wondering if you used frame rate priority (burst regardless of whether in focus) or focus priority (will not burst until focus is achieved) on AF-C mode?

I used to use frame rate priority but alot of pics turned out out of focus with AF-C, so wondering if getting a nikkor 18-55f/2.8 will be more substantial than the tamron 17-50f/2.8 for the better focusing speed. Not sure how big an improvement it is but really itching to test the nikkor out...

AF-S doesn't mean faster speed, it is just more silent. I leave mine @ focus priority, and I don't burst more than 3 at a time despite doing it at 5fps. AF Macro is so easy on D200, but if you ever go too close....around 1:1, this method is not very feasible.

Still wanna bother with the 17-55mm? laugh.gif time to go full frame liao lar...get the 17-35mm.

wow...you are master at cameras dude..salute!!! i get your point but for the flag pic i really couldnt see the diff...haha..maybe on other shots it will be more obvious...yeah..3 af points sometimes bug me a lot... usually i go mf when the cam just dont want to focus on the object i wan... your method seems to be quite true..haha...put af-c and shot a few burst...will try out later... new cam? sponsor me tongue.gif

Yep, its a filter. Just attach it to the front of your lens. Set your D40 to -0.7EV, because it is probably the best setting for the camera.

You get natural colours with that, the D40 tends to be overly bright..

As for the overexposure, you can set it in your camera to view whether the image is overexposed when you select the "Highlight" option. When you set this, the image will blink the areas which are overexposed. Or similarly you can check your histogram.

actually i don quite trust the highlight function...coz sometimes the clouds are actually white and it fools the camera that its blown part..however i still refer to it to make keep blown parts at minimal...histogram...i dun really know how to read a histogram...only know that if the graph is centred means its properly exposed...correct? unsure.gif

Have you been shooting in raw? because I was wondering if you are shooting in raw and adjusting the exposure later on, you aren't really learning much about how to tackle the situation at the first place. If you are shooting jpeg with little touch up, that's good job from me to you.

I prefer #34's composition better compared to #33 because in picture #33, there is too little foreground in the picture.

Just my opinion smile.gif

#35, it's always nice to have some diagonal lines in your composition, but the diagonal line shall be formed naturally, not by tilting your camera.

#33, I don't know why you like this so much. I couldn't find any object to focus on. And the barrel distortion is kinda disturbing.

#34, this is not bad. But the level needs to be adjusted further to make the color pop out. Dull color will make a photo less appealing, regardless of how good your composition is.

Barrel distortion could be good and bad. For coast line, usually you want to avoid it. This can be fixed easily via Photoshop. But under some condition, like shooting urban landscape, barrel distortion will create a 3D effect. Just come to the basic, if you think it's nice and you like barrel distortion, it's absolutely fine.

Because this is a buaya forum. You want to get more comments and critiques, go create a flickr account and join all the respective groups. OTOH, fredmiranda is perhaps one of the most active forum in encouraging photography and not buaya/gear talk. They have weekly, monthly, assignments that you can participate. There's also shutterasia, photomalaysia. You can learn more stuff over there much faster than posting your stuff up here, it's unfortunate but that's the stone cold truth.

If you are thinking of a dSLR, try to read up more on photography review websites like dpReview. Also, try to get a feel of all the dSLRs that are within your budget or those that you think you might want to buy.

E-510 is a very good dSLR as it has CCD-shift IS, self sensor cleaning, live view and also good kit lenses with a very good price. It also produces more natural colours and now has good high ISO noise control.

Ur pics dont mean anything this time, i have no idea what are u trying to catch.Unless if u have a zoom lens (55-200 at least), maybe u can capture some action nearby.

If i were u i will delete all these pics and pretend i never went n take these pics. Overall maybe some credit for ur effort but ur pics really dont mean anything. Sorry.

Hey man, good effort but as the comments said, the true essence is not captured and believe me, trying to shoot an event and capturing the moments are never easy especially when lacking the equipment especially in your case, a zoom lens.

My comments is that for #1, I think you should recompose your image next time. Its like you are taking a small portion of a building and using 5/7ths of the image to show normal clouds. The clouds don't stand out enough.

#4 is a little too senget IMHO.

Hey, good efforts smile.gif Its great seeing you find interesting things to shoot at.

One thing I learned when I was having only the kit lens was that you need to know what your limitations are.

I am not sure how accessible the other areas of the festival are, but maybe you could have taken shots of the preparation instead of the race.

Things like people sitting in the boat at the dock. Teams resting after a race, the preparation before... Maybe you could have gotten closer shots of those and still capture the essence of the festival.

#4 is a little too senget IMHO.

hm...ok.. will work on that.thanks icon_rolleyes.gif

QUOTE(zio @ Sep 14 2007, 02:29 PM)
Hey, good efforts smile.gif Its great seeing you find interesting things to shoot at.

One thing I learned when I was having only the kit lens was that you need to know what your limitations are.

I am not sure how accessible the other areas of the festival are, but maybe you could have taken shots of the preparation instead of the race.

Things like people sitting in the boat at the dock. Teams resting after a race, the preparation before... Maybe you could have gotten closer shots of those and still capture the essence of the festival.

hey there, firstly i haven't been following ur thread but i just came across it today so..here's a thing or two i realised..

ur shots seem to be mostly underexposed..no camera is perfect, try compensating by +0.3EV or so in order to get a better exposed shot..try switching from multi to spot metering to get more accurate exposure readings..some people say tilting the camera diagonally while composing a shot isn't 'creative'..that's just a personal opinion i guess, it's really up to you..i'm guessing you're still a student so here's another thing on camera equip, buy what you need, not what you want..seriously these lenses will cost you thousands so ask yourself are you a macro/wide/tele/portrait shooter?

and no offence, but discussing in a forum on how to take better shots isn't going to help you very much..it WILL help, but to what extent? coz in the end it all boils down to your own experience..which is why you have to be more experimental..try shooting in different lighting conditions and environments so that you'll be able to tackle exposures when you have tricky lighting..there's alot to photography, you just need to see what you like best and put more time into it =)

and if you ever, come across the urge to buy the AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED (RM 2,300) some time in the future thinking it has VR, wide to tele coverage..just to let you know it's overated..it's hardly sharp, it doesn't exactly give the best contrast, it has a rather ridiculous distortion, vignetting isn't any better, chromatic aberrations are on the high side but acceptable and it doesn't exactly have good resolution..this makes it an all-in-one lens with a lot of quality compromise..trust me some time in the future you would want this lens..but regardless of reviews you find, try it out for yourself and think twice..with the same amount of money you could get a better lens..don't forget to invest in some filters too!

welcome to photography and hope to see more shots from you soon bro! =)

P.S. not necessarily only shots of girls attract viewers, shoot something dramatic and you'll get ppls attention smile.gif you could try abstract/conceptual shots as well, they have endless meanings

1. well if you put 55-200mm VR with 18-200mm VR, the 18-200mm VR would be a better choice la..but its much more pricey..

2. 55-200mm VR is around RM 800+ where as 70-300mm is RM 300+ its up to you really if you need the VR or not..personally i hardly go beyond 200mm and i hardly find use of the VR..it works great for frequent indoor shooting tho, which would, once again come back to a question: "would you really need 200mm indoors?"..for events held in small areas it'll be okay..but if you're shooting in a stadium or so, you need more than 200mm..

3. there are lenses in the market which are 'all-in-one' type, like the Nikkor VR 18-200mm, Tamron 18-200, Tamron 18-250...these lenses usually provide limited control over DOF and a compromise in quality..there are also dedicated lenses which provide better performance, quality, and control..here's some examples:

Ultrawide
17-55mm f/2.8
17-35mm f/2.8
12-24mm f/4
14-24mm f/2.8

Telephoto
70-200mm f/2.8
200-400mm f/4
5/600mm f/2.8 and f/4

just a suggestion, you can try for 3rd party lenses...some of them perform rather well..personally i've tried the Tokina 12-24mm f/4 and the Tamron 90mm Di Macro..both of them are wonderful biggrin.gif i heard the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 performs rather well, not too sure bout that..you can check them out, just because 3rd party lenses are cheaper doesn't mean it's not good =)

srry if u find my posts abit long and draggy tongue.gif

Orenzai, do keep in mind that you are using the D40 so Tamron lenses do not have the focus motor built into the lens. If you are looking at Sigma, then I would suggest you look at the ones with the tag HSM on them. smile.gif

haha..3rd party lenses came across my mind... BUT... a big BUT there...is that there is no built in AF motor...which narrows down all the choices i have... for the 70-300 doesnt have af motor...and for noobs like me its really a hassle when that this is moving... i would really consider a tele lens or a macro... generally i still dont know what i would like to focus on YET doh.gif so i will just wait a lil while and let me mind process a bit first... tongue.gif i would LOVE you to write long and i dont mind at all. Why? coz i am a newbie and gotta learn more... thanks again for writing so long notworthy.gif

if i could earn $$$ from photography that would be a miracle...lolz...and the chances are very low... blush.gif

hahaha yea the AF Motor issue slipped my mind..well then 55-200mm VR would be your choice =) or 70-300mm VR (<RM2000) if u may smile.gif

but all in all, don't let the equipment tie you down, the nikkor 18-55mm is still a great lens (better than the canon 18-55mm so i've heard)..you can get a guide from kenrockwell.com on ur D40 =)

yea you should be thankful the wonderful SB-600 is priced at only RM 800 (RM 600 2nd hand)...

get a flash which does the job you need...the SB-400 (RM 360) actually works excellently..i use it more than my SB-600 which has been left idle for almost 2 months now..it's easier to carry around..

and since you're using a D40 you have the benefit of using manual exposure on the SB-400..for me i can't use the manual exposures so i only rely on i-TTL which has never failed me =)

still, if i were in ur position i could do without the flash and rather go for lenses =)

PIC 2 If that's the case, then u should put in some shutter speed playing, bring a tripod along and retake the pic. use slower shutter speed, but dun use too long or else the fountain will look snowy.. Get the right aperture and shutter speed should do the trick. I cant tell u what to aperture and shutter speed to use, but do trials and errors will help a lot. =)

when you snap a watch, you should set it to 10:10.

just go look at all the other watch pictures used for ads and such.

see how all the hands of the watch are at 10:10?

Normally you should set at 10:10 but it also depends on the characteristics found on the watch face. You need to set it so that the hour, minute and second (if present) hands do not obstruct them.

if you notice the edifice, the hands tend to block the digital display. smile.gif so in order to highlight the feature, you still have to 10:10.

and move that damn torchlight away! smile.gif you're suppose to NOT SHOW your lighting equipment.

me thinks the torchlight make you look like you don't know how to frame the picture. smile.gif just my thought.

also, try not to have your pictures in odd sizes. keep it to the usual picture sizes la. use 400x600 or 600x400.

usually 2:3 / 3:2 ratio (like 4R photos) or even 4:5 / 5:4 ratio (like 8R photos). yeah i remember the dimension cos just printed 4x 8R photos today. wink.gif

for picture #5, if you can also do it manually with a zoom lens. Set your camera to shutter priority, 1/30s or slower....zoom in when you click the shutter button. icon_rolleyes.gif

i used the canon 5d's wide angle lens..and the focus ring was superb...not only that lens...but all of them... when i caompare that with the kitlens i am using...i feel that my kitlens very "cheap" when i adjust the focus ring the image would move...later let me post up..i took the pictures edi... smile.gif

How long did it took me to make this thing? 30 minutes only!!! I bet those of you who have faster hands can finish it in 15 minutes.

user posted image
I used my built-in flash... However, it took me quite some time to get to the right distance to ensure that the flash wasn't too harsh as it would make the shiny eages blown.

user posted image
This shot, also the same settings as the above. The difference is that in this shot, i had to adjust the camera to the same level as the car to get different angle, thats why you see that the flash wasn't diffused properly.

user posted image
Hah! My favourite. I experimented a few shots using my handphone's LED to shine from the top, making it look like a spotlight. Cool huh?

user posted image
This shot, it gave me that 'oldies' feel. Yes i desaturated the color so that it looks more pale.

user posted image
Just another shot out of the blue. Maybe Stabilo should hire me as their photographer?tongue.gif

Dude, congrats on taking the first step in making your own mini studio. Now the challenge is taking products which means (if you do some online research) you would notice that the products are all in focus. Probably you might need to shoot at F8 and above but then you would need some proper lighting smile.gif

Keep up the good work man, all the best for your PMR results.

Very simple and easy to setup this mini studio... thumbup.gif

IMO, you should watch out more on the shadow issue for this type of studio shots(i.e.product). But for other reasons or should you be doing some specific theme on your shots....then that's different story edy..... wink.gif

Perhaps u have improved but u r not there yet. Let me tell u why:

1-5 : Those are mainly candid shots. It will be better if u managed to go near (although not advisble and dangerous) or perhaps get a good zoom lens will make some difference (70-300mm).

6 - Still okay

10- the root should be at the back, not front.

11- The best pic from ur series. smile.gif

12. Compo could be better. I prefer the trunk to be at the bottom middle.

13-14. candid shoots. Pic 13 suffers frm lack of focus. I wont post it if i were u.

15. A zoom lens will make a better effect. Compo could be better. But the flash is effective in that pic.

16.WB out alittle. The legs has been chopped. Its a no.

19. Hmm, i quite like tat pic. I would prefer not to use flash but try jump up the ISO and set the correct shutter speed settings. I now its not easy but i prefer that pic w/o flash.

Overall, maybe i give u credit for effort, but u just not there yet. Nice try wink.gif

Hi orenzai, since I like to do flora, I'll comment a few on your flora shots:

#6
Base on your Exif data, I know you have used the smallest aperture possible, but still not small enough. The DOF is still too shallow to make the whole plant in focus. You can either use a tripod next time, or use a shorter focal length so that you can either use a slower shutter speed of larger DOF. As for the composition, the root is one distraction, and the second is the crop is too tight, Have some space around the plant.

#7
The composition is fine, but can be improved further. I know you want to "play" with selective focus, but I guess you have focused on the wrong flower. The one shall be in focus in the flower nearest to you, not the center. If I were you, I'll "break" the center flower, though not so ethical, and have only 2 flowers in the composition, one in focus, and the second in OOF.

#8
This is nice, the only thing I'd have done is leave a little more space around the plant. The composition is too tight to my liking.

#9
I'm pretty sure you know what's wrong with this shot. You have used a long focal length and resulted shallow DOF. And again, composition too tight to my liking.

#10
Wrong angle my friend. The root is blocking the view. And composition is also tight in this shot.

Other than using a higher aperture and shorter focal length to increase your DOF, you shall try to ensure your camera is in a parallel pane with the plant so that the whole plant can be in focus.

Hope the above helps. You can always revisit www.juzaphoto.com to see how a flora photo shall be taken and why his flora turns out so beautiful.

Hmm some improvements here!

Pic 1,2, 5 & 9 will be my pick.

pic 3 - Compo can be better to have a greater impact. The WB seems out too. wink.gif

pic 7 - closer shot will be better.

i see you have group outing. nice!

next time you bring me around your place la.

some shots, like pic #7 for example, would work better if the alignment was straight.

what i notice about angles is either you angle it distinctly or you make it straight. smile.gif

about the picture - slightly la. i know it's at a er........shallow river of some sort.

i look at the greens at the background on the left side of the picture, looks a bit senget. well, basically horizons should always be straightened.

another one would be pic #9.

Just what I think and could be totally stupid, hope you don't mind.

1. Maybe purposely move some dry leaves on the way and lower the angle to also focus on the wood and leaves.

3. Why not go over and try taking the kid's expression as subject as well. Zoom out may look better but I will avoid taking too much of the clothes and the pale. Otherwise it would be good to see the shore a bit. Like part of 8.

5. I don't know but it's too noisy for me. Even it showed the fast & furiousity of the cock.

7. I would try zoom out instead and best if can include the target direction. I don't know how to describe it but it give me the fell like it is part of the nature. Like the tree, the earth, the flowing water, the hunter human being and the prey.

11. I like this one. Simple but nice.

10. I like this one but too bad there's distraction (the legs and hands). The man behind there like happy and enjoying making his dinner. Anyway did you get to try that? Is it lemang?

one problem about going on a tour group, you hardly have time to find your best angle...the broup is always rushing here and there with so many people in all the tourism spot, you wont even dare to leave the group to find your own angle...haiz... best is to go yourself...

I also love the flying bird... just nice... got crop ar?

For (16), if you have TS lense, you can correct & normalise the perpective. If you have too much cash on FF, try to get the 24mm rather than 45mm. thumbup.gif

TS lenses mean those Tilt and Shift lenses. You can adjust the perpective to normalise and change how it looks. Great for shooting buildings, especially tall one. Last time only Canon has these toy, but then Nikon just annoced they are going to have similar stuff.. Should be avaiable for Nikon shooter within this year I think...

FF mean Full Frame. Also mean bigger sensor. Also mean more expensive camera for the loaded people la. It is believe it have much better image quality than normal camera like Canon 40D and Nikon D300. drool.gif

Nice shots, well WB can still be processed later if you got it wrong the first time.

The first shot would have been better if the trees were out of the way. If the idea was to capture fireworks over some landscape, the fireworks must be on top of the landscape.

Just my opinion biggrin.gif definitely not a sifu hehehe

Thats right. The main thing is that the final product looks good smile.gif

You should wait for the next International Fireworks Competition (if it comes again) and make trip to KL to shoot those.

Taking photos of those was a blast smile.gif

Nice moments captured but are you using a shutter speed that is too low? The sky seems overexposed.

It would have more impact if you zoomed in more though smile.gif

orenzai, is the deck red in colour or brown? if you're interested snapping pic of deck, maybe should buy some cooler deck.

eg: guardian deck, ghost deck, black tiger deck, viper deck etc...

nice photos,
but instead of freezing all movement,
u can actually try slower shutter speed,

for example like pic 3 and 4, slower shutter speed can bring out the movement of the dancers..

Man on the drums, ur angle doesnt seem effecting. Well this one is pretty subjective, i cant able to convey the words i wanted to say or not sure how u thinks, but my feedback is the pic has no effect to me.

Its the angle that is making it a normal shot. Either you need to go wider to include more drums or find a way to take a top down shot tongue.gif

Orenzai, I like the last crowd shot. However I'd use a faster SS next time to freeze the movement as some of them appears to be blurry. You can brighten it up a little as it seems to be under exposed on my screen.

Orenzai,

You were posting in the other thread that you want comments. I replied to that thread too. You said that you like to shoot landscape but in your gallery I find all kinds of shots - seems like no particular preference from you.

As for comments, here's some of mine. I hope that you can take them constructively.

I am no expert as I am still learning but this is my 2 cents worth:

1. Your shooting reflects your age. You are young and full of energy and you are hasty. I find most of your shots are either done in a hurry or are random shots. You need to learn to slow down and compose your pictures a bit more carefully. Also sometimes you try to take in too much into your frame. Have you heard the saying that 'less is more'? Try to focus on a single subject and make it stand out. Some of your pics have vague subjects - meaning we have to take a while to try and figure out what is it that you are trying to show us.

2. I don't know why but I find most of your pics underexposed. Is it intentional? Try to get your exposure correct when taking the pic. Don't rely too much on PP and it will save you a lot of time. I know that sometimes you like to fade out the colours of your pic and I am not sure why you are doing so. Is there a reason for you to fade it out instead of leaving it in vivid colours?

3. You seem also not to be very well versed in the technical areas of operating a camera. Things like WB, colour temperatures, aperture control, flash control, EV adjustments. Try reading up on these and get a good grasp on it as it will show on your pic. Blaming the lighting in a certain place for the unnatural colour cast on skin tones is not an excuse.

I like the 3rd one. The centre is the subject... the surrounding ppl look other place and centre look to the camera... nice... You can publish this in the street shooting...

street photography? heard of it but i dunno what it is...

Orenzai, I like the last crowd shot. However I'd use a faster SS next time to freeze the movement as some of them appears to be blurry. You can brighten it up a little as it seems to be under exposed on my screen.

i wanted it to be more blur if possible so that only the contre guy is sharp smile.gif will take note of the underexposed thingy...

once again thanks for taking your tiem to write such a long critique...

1. yeah, i realise that when i go for outing with the older ones(very experienced uncles and adults) i tend to snap more pics and i think i gotta slow down. i always see them taking a long time to set up but for me, i just point and shoot tongue.gif maybe i gotta think properly to compose my shots.

2. nope, the underexposed photos were unintentional. i think i shall look at my histogram more often next time. the desaturation issue, i think so far i only desaturated a few photos(cards and one product shot). will try not to do so next time.

3. i am still not very flexible with the settings. I always forget to set back the settings after wanting to take a particular shot. EG when i wanna take under expose a photo i would minus the ev but then when i continue shooting i would forget to change it back doh.gif sometimes after going out from an indoor environment i forget to lower the ISO and such. that kinda bugs me though. About the WB, i am not familir with that tongue.gif i gotta read up more and be more careful about the color cast next time.

in the other topic i was sayin that i prefer taking landscapes, but nevertheless, anything that has to do with photography interests me too smile.gif

btw i really appreciate your long explanation..thanks

exposure is fine on my calibrated monitor using Color Vision Spyder 2 Pro.

So, dont worry about exposure problems. They look spot on to me.

it happens when people don't have their monitor calibrated.

So if it looks fine to you, don't worry too much about exposure. icon_idea.gif

Exposure is fine for me too, but the 1st 2 pics doesnt seem that effective to me. The last one did, after u convey ur message. Overall not a bad effort, but hoping for better stoty telling pics next time.

Although your monitor does not show Under-exposure photos , it does not mean that your monitor is calibrated accurately.
Please get a device like what calvin is using to get the actual calibrated settings. ( Not really needed in the mean time and you can get it when you got the moooolah to spend and you know what kind of colour cast you would like)

Do navigate and explore your camera better first though.

Don't worry so much. Monitor calibration... hmm... don't think everyone can afford to fork out RM1k for Spyder 3. Or RM500 for Spyder2.

So... easiest way is print some shots... and see if you think is under or over or just nice to your taste.

Remember, all your shots is basically for your own enjoyment. Don't have to feel so tense about it.

No need to know the technical term or whatever. As long as you are happy with the shots. If not, just play around with the controls.

At the end, as long as you are happywith your shots... that is all matter.
