Anyone knows of a good nursing home?

Decent priced as well.

Unsure what's the difference between nursing home and old folks home. I assume nursing home provide more care for the elderly?

The reviews out there are too mixed and I'm hoping for some genuine honest review.

Thanks in advance.

What is decent priced? There's a huge range but for reasonable ones - at minimum in Klang Valley would be RM3.5K+ and above.

Nursing home indicates some form of care. Old folks home, these people are semi-independent, can still move around are are lucid. Meaning they can go to the loo, eat and handle themselves.

No one can give you good reviews. The best case is to get a list and go visit each and everyone of these nursing homes on your own to see the condition and talk to the residents there.

To be brutally honest, if you're looking for good quality and reasonable price, start looking early. Usually these places are full and there's a waiting list.

The others - good ones are very expensive whereas the ones that are cheap aren't so good.

More importantly, it's best if the home is near your house, especially with COVID-19. Also, it will be easier for you and/or family members to visit. Take into account jams etc.

basically there are 2 types . 1 is where the old folks are reasonably independent ---can walk a little . can feed themselves and perhaps even bath and go to toilet independently . hence only minimum care is required . Hence you will want a bit more lively atmosphere --- how will that person spend whole day there doing what . Perhaps exercise in the morning .......... and what more activities in the afternoon ( eg astro shows or singalongs etc ) . Hence whether the staffs are qualified nurses or not ( and how many doesn't really make too much difference ------------( caregiver will suffice ) but possibly there is a doctor whom will come say once a month for checkups ) . For the 2nd scenario ---the old folk is quite dependent on feeding / bathing / toilet ----then you will need to look for nursing homes which has experienced nurses for tube feeding / changing urine bags / getting rid of flem in the lungs and many others requirements ( these are more towards hospice care ) . A simple question can draw whether the home has that experience ----( do they have bed ridden patients and how many ? )

to be honest, most nursing homes are profit oriented.

one important aspect you need to look out for is food. because usually the food supplied at these places might be:

1. of low quality as most people don't really notice this and the easiest way to cut costs;
2. the style of cooking might not suit the patient - e.g. cooking Indonesian style food might not be palatable to chinese
3. the nutrition level etc.

i don't envy you being put in a situation. hopefully you're asking on behalf of a relative or friend. sigh...

Thanks. No one fancies being in that situation. Not the caregiver nor the elderly.

Yes. Malaysian business is often profit oriented.

expensive don't denote quality but unfortunately, it doesn't work in the reverse.

cheap = usually, it's crowded and the care is lacking
expensive = usually better quality though not always.

it's best to visit the nursing home and take the time to talk to the residents. these residents have nothing better to do and can tell you all kind of stories.

PM me, if you're staying in Klang Valley. My advice is if the caregiver is burnt out or close to it, then the faster the decision is made, the better.

The best and economical option is to hire a day care nurse that can take care of the elderly.
Pros = RM3K+, same as nursing home but you can control the quality and also less issue of them not being taken care of

Cons = the responsibility of caregiver still largely rests the family member's shoulder after coming back from work etc. No full respite.

A nursing home was recommended to a close family friend. In the beginning everything seemed nice with all the sugar coating, however as time moved on problems began to appear. You have to keep an eye on the situation and not assume that by engaging these services the problems will disappear or will be taken care of by a 3rd party.

Actually a lot depends on the caregiver taking care of them. Some caregivers are really good and caring, others less so. Of course, the person in charge of the nursing home is also important.

The quality of the nursing home could vary even in the same organisation. Some of these branded nursing home have grown large enough that they operate similar to a franchise system.

The prices has been going up astronomically. It's pretty much a sunrise industry. Since you're so young, probably better to look for a retirement village. I think the concept is starting to take off, so in another 4 decades, it might be a better option.

Ya i did a research on that too. But you still need to research on nursery home. In case you are fully dependent on nurse.

This is what i researched. And its nearby my parents home too.

You have to define what do you consider as good. For some they want cheapest and that is considered good. Some they want a luxuriously appointed place to be considered good. Some they want a place that is only staffed by Chinese before it could be considered good.

Care home, nursing home, old folks home and various other names refer to the same thing usually.

You will need to be very clear as to what your requirements are when finding such a place, some are good for certain clients and patients while some are very general acting more of a "babysitter" rather than a real old age care home.

Cost? You can get cheap ones for as little as RM1.8k and up to RM12k, yes that is per month.
