My Ideapad S340 with an i5-8265U, 8gb ram & 256gb nvme ssd benchmarks slower than my old Dell Optiplex 3020 SFF desktop with an i5-4590 8gb ram & a 320gb hdd.
I know I'm comparing a desktop with a laptop but a quad core hyperthreaded 8th gen i5 should at least match the old 4th gen i5 performance. I tested both using Cinebench R20. The laptop scored 922 while the desktop scores a 1223. That's a 32.5% higher performance.
The laptop is set to performance mode. The laptop cpu is limited at 15W which is stupid. The laptop clearly can handle more power as the temperature under load is around 70°C - 75°C. The laptop power delivery is also proven to be capable of supplying more than 15W to the cpu. The cpu will run at ~25W for the first minute of benchmark, then it drops to 15W for the rest of the benchmark.
The cpu is held back because it can't get more power. What's the point paying for in i5 when an i3 without power restriction is not much slower.
Rant over.
Edit: typo
normal computing only why bother, it functions is to type something to scold ppl and watch por*. if want performance get the gaming laptop with mobile gaming series cpu and gpu. still slightly lack against desktop.I know I'm comparing a desktop with a laptop but a quad core hyperthreaded 8th gen i5 should at least match the old 4th gen i5 performance.
