My Ideapad S340 with an i5-8265U, 8gb ram & 256gb nvme ssd benchmarks slower than my old Dell Optiplex 3020 SFF desktop with an i5-4590 8gb ram & a 320gb hdd.

I know I'm comparing a desktop with a laptop but a quad core hyperthreaded 8th gen i5 should at least match the old 4th gen i5 performance. I tested both using Cinebench R20. The laptop scored 922 while the desktop scores a 1223. That's a 32.5% higher performance.

The laptop is set to performance mode. The laptop cpu is limited at 15W which is stupid. The laptop clearly can handle more power as the temperature under load is around 70°C - 75°C. The laptop power delivery is also proven to be capable of supplying more than 15W to the cpu. The cpu will run at ~25W for the first minute of benchmark, then it drops to 15W for the rest of the benchmark.

The cpu is held back because it can't get more power. What's the point paying for in i5 when an i3 without power restriction is not much slower.

Rant over.

Edit: typo

Edit 2 : Bought new 11th Gen laptop, finally faster than my old Optiplex

Usually tis is done in a way to limit power to cpu to prolong battery life.

That's mobile computing, sacrifice on cpu power to get more juice from battery biggrin.gif

Yeah I can understand the battery argument. My only gripe is it makes shopping for a laptop difficult. The performance heavily depends on how the manufacturer tweaks the max power available to the cpu.

One is 15W processor another is 84W. Apa lagi TS mau?

https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/Intel-...4590/3323vs2234

Synthetic benchmarks, the i5-8265U can match i5-4590 but in burst/single core turbo mode - in prolonged full throttle mode, the 84W processor will maintain performance while the 15W will be throttled back,

I demand my modern shiny laptop to match the performance of my old dusty Dell optiplex.

That's kinda expected. It's i8, not i11. And it's laptop CPU, not desktop CPU.

Do you understand that an 8th Gen processor is actually just 2 gens (1 architecture and 1 process node change) above 4th Gen processors, just that it's super tuned version.

Magic wand also can't do much with when one is 15W vs 84W in just one process node change.

Yeah AMD is cheaper than the new 11th gen i5, but current situation.... kinda hard to find one. An AMD processor combined with limited supply due to MCO makes it impossible to get one.

After researching a bit, the laptop i5 is a very tuned skylake architechture. I guess Intel's marketing bamboozled me into thinking the 8th gen is a much more modern cpu.

-the rated PL1/TDP is 15w so nothing wrong
-you should find a better performing laptop if performance is your priority, since same CPU will have different power limits in different models

According to intel it can be configured up to 25W by the manufacturer. It sucks because you cant know how the manufacturer configures the cpu from the laptop spec sheets.

Not really, if you know where to find. I got mine from Lowyat on the spot, AMD 4500U HP 32 GB 1 TB SSD for about 3.5k. Did for another friend also looking for urgent laptop at PJ Digital mall, same model, but different spec 8 GB 512 SSD, 2.6k only.
