Send SMS to 35 people to intimidate and blackmail, arrested man claimed mobile phone was hacked

(Petaling Jaya, 10th) A man extorted 10,000 ringgit from at least 35 people by sending a text message and threatened to kill if he didn't pay. However, he refused to admit to committing the crime after being arrested, arguing that he had a mobile phone Hacked.

According to the police investigation, the 35 people who received the threatening message were not acquainted with the suspect. Fortunately, no one faced any financial loss in this incident.

Petaling Jaya Police District Superintendent Nie Yi Chani pointed out that the police have received reports in recent days, and the victims have all received death threat text messages from unknown phone calls requesting to transfer RM10,000 to a bank account. If you do not follow the instructions, you will be killed and dealt with.

He said that Damansara, Kota Damansara and Sungai Wai police stations have so far received at least 35 related reports.

He said that at 10:30 pm on the 6th of this month, the police received another report from a local woman (32 years old, administrative staff), and based on intelligence, the suspect was finally found in Langkawi.

"The police went to Cenang Beach Road, Langkawi, to arrest a 29-year-old local man (businessman) involved in the case at 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon. When the suspect was arrested, he argued that his phone was hacked and he never sent similar SMS messages."

He said that the suspect’s 4 mobile phones and 1 bank ATM card were confiscated by the police for investigation, and the suspect had a criminal record involving gambling activities.

He said that the police invoked Article 385 of the Criminal Code (attempt to blackmail) to investigate and delayed the arrest of the suspect for 3 days to assist in the investigation.
