go to settings and select "Show only on 2"
Your laptop display will not showing.
This is how I set my laptop to monitor via HDMI. When I unplug HDMI cable, it will auto display back to laptop display.
When I plug HDMI cable, monitor will show up auto. No need to pressing shortcut key anymore.

Any reason you need the monitor as the primary?

I use my monitor in "extend mode"

BTW at the Display setting there is a tick box to select which monitor you want to make as primary
