Since the Proton-Geely partnership in 2017, we have witnessed two popular SUVs bearing the Proton badge - the Proton X70 and Proton X50. A third Geely-based model is due for 2021, and it is most likely the Proton X90, based on the Geely Haoyue, a 7-seater SUV.

We’ve talked about the Proton V70/Geely Jiaji as a viable candidate previously, but the agreement to purchase the Jiaji will lapse by 31-Dec 2020 and the MPV segment is a diminishing one.

With images of the Geely Haoyue at hand, we took the liberty of giving it Proton’s “infinite weave”, a new colour, and wheels from a Geely-owned brand. The results are what you see here.

The Proton X90/Geely Haoyue 7-seater SUV rivals the likes of the Mazda CX-8 and Hyundai Santa Fe.

1 metre legroom for 2nd row; enough space for 190 cm adults in 3rd row

The Proton X90 / Geely Haoyue boasts third-row seats that can fit a 190cm tall person, and that is something you could not say about most 7-seater SUV.

Bringing the Proton X90 / Geely Haoyue to the Malaysian market will not be a simple task with the obvious RHD conversion in the way.

In China, the Haoyue comes with a choice of two engines – the 1.5 TGDi used in the Proton X50, or the 1.8 TGDi used in the Proton X70, both mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

The Geely Haoyue / Proton X90 has a tougher look with more presence than both the X70 and X50. We think it looks good.

What are your thoughts on the Proton X90 / Geely Haoyue?

Finally a 7 seater... I will definitely buy this...

I was so sad that x70 is 5 seater.

For a big SUV u either fit a big ass 4.0L+ N/A V6 engine to it or 2.5L turbo that puts out well over 250hp with enough torque to spare. Or just slap it with a 2L+ turbo diesel that has at least 450nm or more torque

I own a kia sorento UM diesel 2017, from a suprima 2013. A car priced near 200k . If this comes to Malaysia, will give all 7 seater suv a run for its money. Will I change to x90. No. Engine too small. I get 400 nm torque with the diesel engine. The sorento at almost 2 tons with awd system is still a better package. I will consider the x90 successor though. If they increase the engine output and awd. Changed from suprima since it was too small as my family got bigger and it got stuck in mud requiring 2 hours worth of digging to remove front wheels. Once you go diesel, it is hard to go back to petrol. Few sen more expensive than Ron 95 but get way more mileage. FC about Honda City. My suprima has worse FC.

I put an android 10 " ice system which can support 360 degree camera feed. As far as I tell, only thing which I cannot upgrade is the ADAS. not that I care about ADAS. 360 nice to have.

Will the x90 sell? Yes. It will steal buyers from xtrail, sorento, santa fe etc. Is it late to the market? Yes, like 5 years late. I plan to use my sorento until it is too expensive or hassle to maintain.

If I didn't get the sorento, will I get the x90? Let's say it comes out at 160k. Sorento around 30k higher (going by X50 x70 vs competition). Engine, awd, diesel. Sorento is still better but after sales is a problem with naza selling it for now. If there is a awd version, then yes. I will pick the x90 awd version. I no longer want to be stuck in the mud. Now driving in heavy storm, also confident.

yes, kinda hard for some1 who have tasted diesel and go back to petrol.

for your scenario is you require a AWD or 4WD as you always stuck in the mud. whereby i believe not most of the ppl experiencing.

with that kind of money you can spend on a car....very jarang those ppl will live in a place that will stuck on the mud laugh.gif

for me....im actually eyeing the cx5 diesel.

consider my travel is 99% highway.

u just born today?

even conti manufacturer bow down to chinese market and make their car extra long for 2nd row for sedan.

geely is china home born brand. leg room is not something they will compromise
*
Yes many cars that are built for the China market do come with extra leg room in the rear because many cars are driven by a professional driver rather than the owner.

However for a 1.9m tall adult to sit comfortably in the 3rd row of a SUV plus have that amount of storage room remaining as pictured it would need to be larger than a Lexus LX570 which the Geely Haoyue is not.

My first few cars since I graduated were diesels as it was then common that most cars in UK were diesels if it was a company car. The high torque and ease to get up to speed was simply something you could not replicate on a petrol unless it was a much bigger capacity petrol engine.

That was one reason why I enjoyed having a Ford Ranger, big diesel engine and on the highway for long distance.

Unfortunately these diesel engines would not be around for passenger vehicles give it 5 years as it would be replaced by either electric or hybrid electrics.
