I don't expect anything to be fixed in this lifetime ...

The real elephant in the room is racial politics, and no politician dares to touch the issue

Yes. Even Tunku Abdul Rahman had a hard time dealing with it. There was a time when we could have made things work but we failed.

I really wonder if Singapore and Lee Kuan Yew had stayed in Malaysia, whether we could have made a real difference. But I think not.

In the end, Lee Kuan Yew forged a better path for Singapore. They were lucky they had a true statesman. We were unlucky, we got ATUK instead.

Problem is Malaysia is FOOKed even without them. The Malaysian bureaucracy is already corrupted to the core. To fix it, requires almost authoritarian rule by the right person. Just like what Lee Kuan Yew did in the 1960s to 80s.

I knew the civil service was corrupt but those corrupt ones even when the extent of approving non-halal meat and maybe corpse meat as HALAL to sell to their own people. Whilst professing to be all holy and pious.

I mean, since they're so religious, want to songlap, do it in other areas lah. Why own religion also want to kacau?

Nah.... 1MDB is just the straw that broke the camel's back. Things were way worst than that. We had a continuous succession of scandals and bad decisions.

It's just terrible that GE14 was a monumental failure on opposition part... due to ATUK. Things will just get worst in GE15 and beyond.

This is what is truly meant by riding on the coattails of religion, pretend to be all holy and righteous but can swindle / steal / bribe etc

Country is effed for the long term, like the article put it ie investments down, education system is purposely shit to keep the masses as stupid as possible, rely on foreign labor to try and keep prices low, massive irreversible brain drain

Coffers are drying up, but maybe there might still be some glimmer next year as crude and palm oil prices are rising again. Nevertheless, relying on commodities is cyclical and will just promote more leakages when times are good

Covid has really exposed everything, but the majority of people are basically just trying to scrape by, so they have no time to reflect on all this

Yes, COVID-19 exposes our vulnerabilities esp. the foreign worker issues.

We need GREAT LEADERS that can make hard and difficult decisions. Unfortunately, everything is highly politicised, so things can't change. I think we're already caught in a death spiral.

If we want to be very frank, why are the majority of Malays unemployed in the private sector? Why can't they find jobs overseas?

It's because our education system is not based on meritocracy. It's fine to allow FREE EDUCATION for all or even SUBSIDISE education for Malays. But it's not right to:

1. Game the system by setting lower standards based on color;
2. Change the language of instruction from English to BM.

If the Govt has the guts to implement proper educational standards based on meritocracy and medium of instruction to English... And ensure teachers are dedicated and themselves well educated, we can see good results maybe in a decade or two.

But it's a pipe dream... we won't change. Cos it's too highly politicised. In fact, we're going backwards, more focus on religion rather than Maths/Science/AI.

Goh Report

In August 1978, then Deputy Prime Minister Goh Keng Swee was tasked to lead a study team to identify problems in Singapore’s education system and propose solutions for reform.[1] The government was of the view at the time that a thorough review was crucial to align the education system with the rapidly changing social and economic needs of the country.[2] A key aim of the exercise was to consider how education policies and their implementation could be made more flexible to enable each child to learn at a pace suited to his or her ability.[3]

Submitted on 9 February 1979, the Report on the Ministry of Education 1978 (also known as the Goh Report) identified three main shortcomings in the education system, namely, high education wastage, low levels of literacy and ineffective bilingualism.[4] These problems stemmed largely from the peculiar situation created by existing bilingual policy in which the languages of instruction (primarily English and Mandarin) were not spoken at home by some 85 percent of school children.[5] This troubling state of affairs was exacerbated by the switch from Chinese-stream to English-stream education over the preceding two decades, which witnessed the accelerated establishment of English-stream schools, along with the mass recruitment and training of new teachers to the detriment of the quality of teaching.[6]

The Goh Report pinpointed weaknesses in the policies, systems and procedures of the Ministry of Education (MOE). Foremost was the failure of the education system, with its rigid and uniform curriculum, to cater to differences in absorption capacities and rates of learning among students.[7] Another factor was the lack of long-term planning and specific objectives to guide the curriculum, for example, there was no clear definition of “effective bilingualism”.[8]

Having identified the problems in education and their underlying causes, the study team proposed several recommendations that became the basis of the New Education System (NES).[9] Among the major changes brought about by the Goh Report was the streaming of pupils into different courses at the upper primary and secondary levels depending on their language proficiencies and academic abilities at Primary 3 and Primary 6 respectively.[10] The report also made recommendations to improve the organisational effectiveness of the MOE, one outcome of which was the establishment of the Curriculum Development Institute of Singapore (CDIS), which began operations in June 1980.[11]

The Goh Report was endorsed by parliament on 30 March 1979.[12]
