Looking to extend my roof for my car porch.

Looking for glass/polycarbonate roof.

Any pros/cons/advice while I look for contractor?

I was told poly will crack after 4-5 years.

Glass will be more long lasting, while polycarbonate may crack and may coz abit of leaking in the future.
But in terms of price, polycarbonate is more economical.

Yes. Glass looks nice in beginning but will look rusty after a year or two. If there is roof tile drops onto it ...... you will regret.

I was considering poly-carbon but it will not last. At the end I use metal one. Nowadays got the type with foam in between sheet. They are basically not noisy when rain and very cool during hot day. The bottom side is already plain white and need no additional ceiling cover. I can walk on top with no dent unlike single sheet ordinary metal awning.

No nee to clean that frequent unless you have OCD... biggrin.gif
As long as there is not water outlet that drip down on to the glass awnings... it will be OK. Normal rain will not leave too much water mark

for glass, if you are lucky, hardened bird droppings or stray cat's poop would be very annoying.
You may go for frosted type but cost should be higher.

for PC, it depends on which grade you use.
Mine has been working great for 8 years now, no crack and no leak.

for ACP, this should be the best maintenance free material.
However, it blocks sunlight entirely and may introduce popping sound if installed badly.

Quality wise : Glass> ACP > PC
Maintenance : ACP>PC>Glass
Price : Glass > ACP=PC?

Some quotations from contractors that I've gotten in the past few days (psf)
Lexan PC: 28-52
Some random local brand PC: 22
ACP: 27
another 3mm solid pc: 27
12.38 laminated glass: 41

how do you define the "quality" aspect?
I would agree if this refers to initial aesthetic.
However, in term of durability, I would assume ACP > glass

As for the price of PC/ACP, you can definitely find cheaper elsewhere.
The price varies with the steel frame size too.

I had seen FB ads that glass psf price can go to RM39psf, thickness is unknown.

You're right. ACP > Glass in terms of durability.

it depends on your own preferences
glass
pro - light penetration (coloured, tinted, frosted and etc), moderate durable, not noisy during rain, easier to maintain, less water leak issue
con - heavy and thus need strong supports, expensive, need to clean once awhile, not impact proof but strong enough if thicker glass

Polycabonate or similar product
pro - light penetration (coloured, frosted), cheaper, light weight
con - not durable (crack, leak), will still need to clean, noisy (there are some types not so), will still need to clean once in awhile

Aluminium Composite Panel (ACP)
pro - easy to maintain, black-out (opaque) characteristic, light weight, many colours to choose
con - leak issue, moderate noisy, moderate expensive

Wanna ask. For MBSA Shah Alam awning permit, is there any minimal distance required from gate?

I notice that a lot of roof tiles require a steep angle. What is the minimum angle required?
