this Lao Gan Ma keep coming up in my youtube recommendation over and over again. so i decided to taste test it and see what the fuss is all about, since even John Cena made a video about it, IN MANDARIN

Attached Image

Attached Image

1st test was with plain rice. taste bland. got a hint of spiciness, mostly taste like oil

2nd test with plain noodle (airdried noodle, cooked in boiling water for 2 minutes). also the same. taste like oil.

3rd test, on top of garlic stirfried sawi. tbh i prefer without it.

4th on top of omelette. yeap, it accentuates omellete taste abit. but not that much

so i really dunno wat the fuss is all about with this laoganma. bland, not hot. how the cuck do u even eat this thing? or did i bought the knockoff version one? laugh.gif

I don't think it mix well with plain noodle/rice
imo there are few food/dishes that ngam with it

- pan mee especially dried
- chinese mee goreng/shou mian (white colour, not the black colour kind)
- fried rice
- chinese dumpling (shui jiao)
- put into a small plate, put some coriander, sesame oil, mix together, quite good as dip sauce for steamboat

and it appears you bought the "辣三丁油辣椒" version which has some peanut and tauhu inside,
personally I think the most basic version "油辣椒" still the best

My friend last time bought chili oil that looked like that (but not that brand la) from CHINA. IT has a different kind of heat. Its more like warming and not stinging type of heat. Its main flavour is the toasted peppers inside. Yes it is oily.

Need to add soy sauce to tune the taste to your liking. Some receipe calls for adding chinkiang vinegar to make hot & sour noodles (酸辣粉)

Reason soy sauce not added is because different recipe calls for different amount. Also can add sesame seeds and arowana brand sesame oil and/or pure sesame paste to complete the entire flavour profile.

Sichuan people like to add a bit of msg to tune the spicyness and i find it pretty nice.
