Hi guys, new guy here.

I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on the issue...

I've been scouring the forums and wasn't sure where to ask this question (or if it's been asked) but I currently have a Region 3/C PS3 and was wondering if I should still keep it or sell it off and find a US model. Reason being that I currently have a lot of Reg 1 DVDs and PS2 games that won't play on my PS3, and seeing how Blu-Ray prices here are purportedly being sold at twice the amount that they should be, I might end up importing them and would like some peace of mind knowing they'll play in my PS3 right off the bat.

Anyone here think I should go through with this? My PS3's about a mth old, and I've had no problems with it at all...just feel a little sad my God of War 2, Kingdom Hearts 2, etc. is sitting there unused...

Who here recommends Reg 3/C over Reg 1/A?

Thoughts?

Well I hope not to lose too much of money, I'd sell my PS3 first or at least try and setup an exchange...hopefully I won't lose too much. I hear prices are around RM 1,700 these days? (at least what I've seen in the forums here...)

if playing previous U/C titles are ur main issue, then by all means get it, blu ray movies won have any effect, as region 3 ps3 falls in the same bluray region(A) as US

no, what i meant was ntsc uc ps3 is EXPENSIVE as hell here..last time i checked, they sell the 60 gig model around rm 2300..with one controller..no games..no free blu ray (i thought they should give Taladega Nites or James Bond blu ray??)personally i think, its a RIP OFF.Thats why retailers sell the asian or Jap model, its cheaper..cant blame them since shipping from USA is a bomb.

Rx330: Pardon my ignorance, but isn't my HK PS3 Reg C? And while I know BD games are primarily non-region locked, I think movies are locked. And if I were to import them from Amazon or what not, they'll mostly be Reg A...and I feel chances for Reg C releases will be slimmer, unless they're big hits.

Plus there's govt. censorship I may have to worry about if Reg C BDs are released locally...

Snipersnake : RM 2,300?? DAMN. Well that sorta ruins my plans a bit. When was the last time you checked? And isn't the Jp model the same as US? (aka being BD Reg A? Not sure about PS2/DVD Reg code)...

HK ps3 is region3, not C its locked for DVD but for bluray, its region A, the same as japan, and U/C

most blurays owners here import from amazon or other US website plying on their jp , hk or SG sets

For BD movies HK and US share the same region. Like snipersnake posted if you going to get a US PS3, ready to prepare paying a hefty load of money....

Well I just went downstairs to check the box: it's Reg A. tongue.gif Thanks guys, my bad!

Should've checked more thoroughly.

Snipersnake: eBay Malaysia? HA! Wouldn't touch that with a 10ft pole. Going to the States? Problem is I just came BACK.

Local retailers or lowyat.net forumers would've been my choice.

But seeing how I've been enlightened by Rx330 and Tot31, half my concerns are evaporated. It was only BD that I was worried about, I have an old PS2 and a region-free DVD player so it's not all bad.

It's just that I thought it would be cool to be able to make full use of my PS3, plus it sorta upscales DVD content (my DVD player doesn't).

I don't have any dvd standalone upscaler but I really don't like PS3 upscaler. Maybe I'm playing with my LCD monitor.

It depends on the DVD source. PS3 upscaler is pretty good. Even better than any upscaling DVD out there. There were definitely some slightly noticeable jaggies, but I've seen worse. tongue.gif When you consider that upscaling is just one of the many functions of the PS3, I think the performance is pretty impressive.

True, true thumbup.gif . Trust me, b4 this many dunno the differ between DVD5 and DVD9 video quality. But after the intro of the DVD upscaler, many will much appreciated the DVD9 video quality including me... tongue.gif .

I <3 my PS3*.

FYI, what i meant was, if the source's bitrate is higher, the movie won't fit in a single layer DVD (DVD5). Which mean, most movies with higher bitrate will ONLY fits in dual layer DVD (DVD9).

QUOTE
DVD-5 DVDs can easily hold 2 hours of video content. The average bitrate for 2 hours on a DVD-5 is roughly 3.5 kbps.

DVD-9 DVDs can hold twice the video content at the same bitrate or can have higher bitrates (average bitrate of 7 kbps) for the disc.

Higher bitrates can often mean better picture quality so many Hollywood DVDs are DVD-9 discs. That said, if your video was shot with a miniDV or DV-CAM you may not see that much of an improvement with higher bitrates.

The downsides of higher bitrates are slightly less compatibility with older DVD players and cost. It is more expensive to replicate DVD-9 discs.

Thanks guys for all your input. I feel slightly better now about my PS3. Still wish I could play my PS2 games though, but oh well, this way my PS2 won't get left out. Again, I think my main concern was Blu-Ray; if that was crippled by region lock, in addition to DVD, then I think I'd be at a huge disadvantage.

Snipersnake: Going back to the States? Not for a while...just came back from studying there. And I did get stuff in bulk; Reg 1 DVDs and PS2 games cry.gif . I had thought of buying a PS3 while I was there, but I was lucky enough to snag a Wii, so I brought that back with me instead!

Not true. Try to rip an original DVD without all the extras. In most cases, esp newer movies, its not possible to fit the movie alone into a single layer DVD.

Its pretty difficult to get good quality on ahem DVDs anymore and that's why i rent these days. I rather wait a bit longer till they get released on the rental shops. Why bother getting a DVD9 when u know its gonna be a DVD5. For all u know, the DVD5 source is actually a 700++MB Divx file. Urghhh.... rclxub.gif

I rent my dvds from Ez Video. They can censor all the kissing scenes for all i care. I think its worth it considering the picture i get is so much better than those ahem dvds. If u think about it, most movies are left uncensored.

^ If u'r LCD monitor has HDMI inputs, then u shouldn't be paying additional to get a HDMI-DVI converter.
