Finally its time to install new SSD to my old laptop.
Will be using USB boot drive created using windows media creation tools to install new windows.
2012 toshiba laptop, satelite L850.

A few questions for dear techy ktards after ayam reading some guides on installation.

1. I understand i need to change the boot order to use USB first (or is there an option to boot from USB only once?), at what point do I pull out the USB stick to prevent PC keep going into first step of installation/booting from USB stick?

2. Do i need to initialise a new Samsung EVO 860 SSD? if yes how do i do it?

The more i read the more problems i scared might pop up...

Edit:
Just realize the 2.5inch ssd is 7mm thickness and my old hdd is 9.5mm, need to buy spacer?

Edit 2
Any idea why my bios no option to select uefi or legacy?
Computer too old?
Last I check my mother board can do uefi one...

Try plugging in the usb stick and switch on the laptop. Certain laptops will boot straight to the usb. If it didn't ,try pressing the key shown during bootup to choose boot device. You can pull out the device once it finished installing the os. Safe bet will be when you type in your username password etc.

You don't have to initialise if you're gonna install a new os on a new drive. You can format the drive while installing the os itself. It will detect the drive like normal.

i just worried before get to the stage of username, PC need to restart to finish installation?
Thx

After you installed the SSD and created a bootable USB windows installation.

Start laptop and spam F12 key to get boot menu.

Choose the USB drive instead of the SSD drive.

Then follow screen instruction.
*
choose only? no need to move the boot order?

QUOTE(kinnylaw @ Nov 13 2020, 06:29 PM)
SSD, HDD all work the same way.

1) Instead of setting the boot order, just check how to enable manual boot device selection when the laptop start up.
2) Follow the on screen instructions to perform the installation.
3) You can initialize the SSD in Windows installation, as you need to create partition for Windows to install into.
4) Once the installation done, it should prompt you that it will reboot (don't remember if it's automatic or need manual intervention, just follow on screen instructions)
5) If remember correctly it will tell you when it's safe to remove the USB. I never remove the USB, as I manually select to boot into USB drive. I just exit out of the installation if it booted into the USB again.
*
seems like i can get it to boot from USB only once from boot menu instead of changing the order.

1. Now laptops will boot to USB if you plug in USB Drive contain the installation media file.

2. After you install the Windows. Download the Samsung Magician Software to check the details.

I am also using this SSD. You can increase the Write and Speed aka the Turbo Mode.
They do have secure erase in which that you factory reset the SSD.

QUOTE(Yggdrasil @ Nov 13 2020, 06:44 PM)
Most of the time BIOS will auto detect as long as it's a bootable USB created via Windows Creation Tool or Rufus.

Otherwise, you change boot order.

Another way is to boot into advanced start up then select boot from USB

Got plenty of tutorials on YouTube..
*
looks like i just need to plug in bootable USB drive and the new empty SSD, might not need to kacau the boot setting.
thank you sirs

QUOTE(amir.asyraf @ Nov 13 2020, 06:49 PM)
Windows 10 only one restart after first install (I think). So after you install, restart and quickly disconnect your USB so it doesn't run the installation process again. If however you get into the installation process again, just force shutdown by holding the power button, no problem since the OS already installed in your SSD.

thanks

Just realize the 2.5inch ssd is 7mm thickness and my old hdd is 9.5mm. Looks like might need spacer? My old hdd is not secured by screws, just the cover to hold it in place, 2 mm thinner might make new ssd wobbly inside?

Everyone say ssd is a lot faster then hdd, don’t think need turbo mode? Lol

use win10, then install on SSD boot drive.

drivers can auto download later once windows installation completed.. that's how I install on my old 2012 lenovo z430

Did you have problem with different thickness?

Yup, it depends on people using Turbo.
With and Without Turbo almost the same speed but can't really tell.

Wish to use but until my old ASUS Laptop the screen got problem.
When I try to tap on the keyboard and move the screen forward immediately force the computer to sleep mode.

I suspected mine the hinge not tight. Like suddenly sleep halfway when using.
Now my SSD store as storage as I try to use until it auto sleep by itself.
*
Maybe can disable the function where it go into sleep if you cover screen?

QUOTE(netmatrix @ Nov 13 2020, 08:24 PM)
Obviously pressing F12 is over ride boot sequence. No need to bother going into BIOS to set sequence. Boot once install, take out USB and then it will boot from SSD. Why over think it by changing boot sequence?

And from your model range seems there is capable to do UEFI boot. Even better as you do not need to key in product key.
*
Because everywhere I read seems to have the instruction that tell me to change the boot sequence. Haha
Ei I tot product key is related to windows part liao? Uefi or legacy, either one should auto detect my activated windows.

QUOTE(netmatrix @ Nov 13 2020, 08:27 PM)
Just fold 2 pieces of paper and slide it to support the corners. If you afraid it might come off, then tape the sides to the paper. Its not difficult. Done it many times.
*
This sounds like a good idea to do it. Haaha. I will try.

QUOTE(acbc @ Nov 13 2020, 08:28 PM)
U can order a 9.5mm SSD spacer from Shopee. I ordered some for my Thinkpads as many using 9.5mm HDD previously. With the newer 7mm SSD, the spacer helped to make the SSD fit snugly.
*
I will try the cheapo method first.

Yeah. This I know. Many places mention it.

*
I check at system information, it says unsupported. Does that means my mother board no support uefi?
But last I check with part number, it says my motherboard can do uefi.
Anyway the disabling secure boot is so that I can boot from the usb drive?

QUOTE(Skylinestar @ Nov 13 2020, 09:29 PM)
1. I just installed win10 3 weeks ago. I set my USB as primary boot drive. Installed win10. When it restarted, I'm surprised the bios bootup screen didn't show "press any key to boot from USB", which I used to see on older machines. The installation was painless.

2. You setup your SSD when you wanna install win10. You still get the typical drive partition setup page.
*
Your second statement means the partitions setup page equal to initialization of ssd?

Did you have to use any spacer due to different thickness of 2.5in ssd and hdd?

QUOTE(speedy3210 @ Nov 13 2020, 09:51 PM)
Since SSD offers much much faster read/write speed over magnetic HDD, you have a choice of cloning your existing HDD over to your new SSD. I believe Samsung will have a software to help its SSD user to clone over their old contents from HDD.

Try go this route and save some hours reinstalling legacy software that you have already installed over the years. This has not included copying over data files too, which can be done 1 shot thru cloning.

Cloning saved me hours of work when I upgraded from 240gb to 512gb SSD less than 12hours ago. laugh.gif  laugh.gif
*
I know can clone. But I don’t have many software inside also. Mostly files. I already made 2 copies into 2 different external drives.

The thing I am a bit worried is the driver part. Some people say windows will auto find the right drivers for hardware.

if ur ssd is smaller than ur hdd tray, just jam in some paper or tissue. if ur ssd bigger, then ur fucced.

btw, remember to clear ur old os on hdd, using disk cleanup
*
Ssd smaller. Intend to keep old hdd as it is. If ssd got problem can Pasang balik. Already got two external hdd to backup files.

QUOTE(NorAzdanNordin @ Nov 13 2020, 10:17 PM)
Easiest is clone the HDD la.

If you don’t want to clone and just want a clean install, then just turn on your laptop with the old HDD, plug in ur SSD through USB as an external, then format and partition ur SSD, then install windows on ur SSD using it as an external, then after it’s installed, swap the HDD for SSD and then boot it up lo.

Ezpz.
*
Other reason I want fresh install is because I don’t have the usb connector adaptor. Lol
I read Can be difficult to fresh install that way also because windows don’t let you install another system when you are using it.

QUOTE(zemega @ Nov 13 2020, 10:25 PM)
Those drivers probably not for win 10. Download latest drivers from laptop website, safer that way. The most annoying problem will be win 10 cant access network due to driver problem.

Some laptop has disk cage that you can reuse for SSD. Else, you can use double tape, thick double tape, or velcro tape.
*
Chebye toshiba no support my 8yo model anymore. Cannot find on their website.
Will try the tape method also

Keep the old drivers backup for now. It's still possible to track down most of the drivers from the component manufacturers website.
You might need to ask other forums or Reddit on how to get the drivers for your particular laptop. What's the model number anyway?

Can only find bios drivers. https://support.dynabook.com/support/driver...Text=1200014314. No official support for Windows 10 for this laptop.
You have to use something like DriverView to list out all the driver details. Or HWiNFO. You're going to have to take a leap of faith and hope everything works in Windows 10. Else you really have to hunt the drivers one by one.
*
it actually just work leh. no need install any driver.
i think windows is installing in the background. the touchpad couldn't scroll at first, now can scroll liao.
lets hope don't find other issue later

Your model has common WHQL hardware la. Very sure 100% of the drivers would  be there. Unless they have some proprietary feature like Sony VAIO switch or custom ATK key feature or custom security hardware, then you need to visit the manufacturer for these drivers. Most laptops today would work with Windows Inbox drivers.
*
thanks
and your f12=boot override also true
don't know why all those website keep telling people to kacao the boot sequence. haha

just that when I was installing didn't get the option to choose uefi installation, maybe just my laptop too old. don't have this function.
