Anyone knows where else to get this power extension cable...?

Apple Store doesn't seem to sell them anymore, and I doubt resellers carry them...

Need to use this coz the default power cables that came with my MBA kept electrocuting me...
*
I used this with my MBPR15 but I got electrocuted anyway. Easiest way to sort this out - get a foot rest like the IKEA Dagotto. It's better for your posture anyway.

anyone here read about m1 mac excessive ssd wear issues?
*
Yup. 16GB RAM will help to reduce wear. Unfortunately, not much else.

I've tracked my SSD writes over a couple of days with varying time - and it averages about 20GB/day for my workload, which is within expectation.

My guess is people with high writes are really pushing their machines. Who knows.

what app you are using to monitor SSD read & write status?

under which condition if the SSD life is nearing EOL that we should be aware off?
*
I use smartmontools and put the data in a Google sheet, then extrapolate the results.

Watch the Available Spare indicator. When it reaches 0%, that's when you start to worry.

Just checked. Today it's at 2.67TB written. 25/2 to 3/3 = 6 days. (2.67-1.85)/6 = 137GB/day.
*
That works out to roughly 50TB/year - which I personally think is inconsequential for a quality SSD.

QUOTE(shockk @ Mar 4 2021, 03:26 PM)
It's not the issue with the M1.

It's MacOS that's the issue.

Excel for Mac - runs terribly slow (on super heavy spreadsheets) on my MacBook Pro 16" Intel Core i9 as well. However, the spreadsheet has no issues with my 3 year old PC running windows with average hardware specs.

The same goes for the entire Microsoft Office app suite for Mac, including Word too.
*
I'd say it's Microsoft. They didn't build it to be performant on MacOS. Unfortunately, if you want the best performance, you're just going to have to use a Windows machine or Parallels/Fusion and hope that MS has a change of strategy one day.

The new Microsoft Edge is a good replacement for chrome since it also based on Chromium.
But I will just stick to Safari on Mac and using Edge on Windows.
*
Use Chrome. Safari will destroy your SSD. It loves to swap.

Whats the alt browser you guys use besides safari and chrome?
Tried to use chrome but its really consuming too much resources and generating a lot heat also..I tested using chrome to watch some live Twitch streaming on full screen and the cpu reached 100c, while safari only recorded at around 50+ degree on the same video streaming settings.
Safari is no doubt a good browser, but just wanted to know if there is something better outside.
*
Could be your extensions. All kinds of streaming is very gentle on the M1.

I just tested on some random stream at 1080p60.
CPU util 60% (of 800%).
SOC Die temp is 41C.

QUOTE(hongonn @ Mar 12 2021, 12:47 AM)
I am using macbook air 16/512 for software development and ssd write is about 2TB per day. This is really no joke. One year is about 700TB, 2 year is 1400TB, 3 year is 2100TB. I not sure the ssd can last 2100TB not but one day is 2TB meaning my entire 512 ssd is written 4 times over per day.
*
How many of your apps are running on Rosetta 2? There's running theory that it's one of the major causes for the high writes.

QUOTE(loonsave @ Mar 8 2021, 04:06 PM)
But I remembered review show that chrome use 10x ram more than Safari. Maybe I try Edge.
*
No longer true. Especially not in the M1 optimized version of Chrome. Using more RAM is also a good thing. It's there to be used man.

I see. Because I saw articles that in Feb 2021 that tested on Big Sur. Didn't notice that it was solved.
*
That article was critically debunked in the comments. The reviewer doesn't know how to assess RAM utilization.

i think i can omit the "SSD swap" gate happening in M1 macs.

i've checked my wife's new MBA M1 16GB 1TB SSD, so far no issue via DriveDX app.

or this is just a scare for potential M1 macs buyers?   whistling.gif
*
The problem is real but it doesn't affect everyone equally. The root cause hasn't been identified yet.

here I think to take it and I'm interested to know if it is as good as everyone says about it?
*
It is.

I work in bioinformatics field so i handle big data, the analysis would be reference matching and statistical mostly.. but that aside, I'm looking for a long term or future proof laptop.. i don't do game much, or would say i don't play game lately except a bit on mobile phone.. i also use laptop for some music softwares and video editing just for hobby
*
Perhaps the true answer is - don't use Excel, or perhaps use it together with Power Query and Power BI.

QUOTE(Mavik @ Mar 21 2021, 03:56 PM)
Then I wouldn't recommend the M1 Macs as the software used for it isn't exactly optimised (I am just assuming as you didn't answer my question on apps, unless you work mainly with Jupiter notebooks and Python). My data scientists at work all stick to desktop PC's instead as they offer better performance and they seem a little bit more familiar with Windows.
*
I get around this by hosting my own VM's to handle Windows workloads and RDP'ing into them. That's how you enjoy the best of both worlds. smile.gif

Can anyone share your experience using Microsoft Office applications on M1? Particularly Excel and Power Point.

A bit disappointed to learn that the Mac version does not have Power Query and Power BI.

Any file compatibility issues when exchanging files between Windows and Mac?
*
No file compatibility issues. The rest you've already mentioned.

If you need the best out of Excel, stick with Windows or run it in a VM. I have that but I haven't touched it since I shifted those workloads to online platforms. I prefer to have my work be platform agnostic. I use Zoho Analytics but i've also toyed with Google Data Studio.

have 2020 Intel MBA bought in May 2020 new from apple website. house had a power surge / blackout recently and one of the things that's spoilt is the MBA power adapter. laptop itself is fine.

wondering if possible to put the adapter in for a warrenty claim? if not, are there any 3rd party adapters I should consider or just get the original @ RM319
*
I'm using the Baseus GaN 65W charger. Works fine. I wanted a charger for multiple devices so this was good. You can get the Lite version which is cheaper.

I use the Xiaomi 34" widescreen monitor using a Display Port cable to USB-C for the MBA as well as my company's MBP.

Does it run at full resolution? Can you link to the cable you're using? Thanks!

Latest disk write reading. I'm averaging 1.5TBW/mo. At a conservative rating of 150TBW, my SSD should last over 8 years with my workload.

i disabled swap file usage in mac os and i change my browser from chrome to safari. and i try to use only m1 native app. after all these my daily ssd usage is roughly 6~10gb only. my usage is only surfing net and youttube anyway.

i tried install counterstrike:go from steam, dl size is about 10gb-ish. after install the game the ssd write shoot to 40gb+.so i guess apple really design the ssd to be used in this way.
*
What did you use to disable your swap? Did you use this?
CODE
nvram boot-args="vm_compressor=2"

vm_compressor=2

yes something like this. not entirely sure it really works or not. to set this required to disable sip. if u reenable sip the setting will go back default value
*
I used to do it but this time decided to leave it alone since my workload is unlikely to kill the SSD in my machine's lifetime.
