Hi everyone. I'm looking to change my phone as it is almost hitting the six year mark and it's beginning to show a lot of issues. I was wondering whether it's better to subscribe to a telco plan eg. Maxis or Digi for 24 months or pay cash? I heard it saves money but some people also say in the long run you pay more.
Never subscribed to a telco plan before. Right now I'm using Digi prepaid 68/month for 30gb + unlimited calls and it is sufficient for me.
In Digi's website it mentions 173 a month x 24 for Ip pro So you save 747, is this true? Or do I still have to pay installment price and is there hidden costs. Also what are the reasons you choose pro or 12? Thank you for answering!

Getting Started

|
If you have an existing line and satisfied with your data amount, calls, and text. Just get the phone straight from the apple authorised dealers. They offer 0% interest instalment from 12 months up to 36 months via selected credit card. So essentially you are just paying the phone rather than signing for telco that you have to pay not only the line but the phone as well.
The saving part that is mentioned by them is usually you have to sign a plan, then get the phone at a discounted price (correct me if im wrong). But the total price in the end that comes out from your pocket will always be more than buying just the phone

I ordered 12 pro with Digi too, same plan as you. As for the reason i chose 12 pro over 12 is that honestly i always go with the higher end model, thats just my preference. But this year, iphone 12 really stand close with 12 pro, if you dont mind telephoto lens(which not many people use seriously) and the color option, you can take iphone 12. The display is same for both, just iphone 12 pro has brighter screen 800 nits over 650 nits.

The "saving" saves you the RRP price for the iPhone. But you need to pay for the postpaid line which after 24 months can be a lot of money. Just an example, I am on Postpaid 38 for one of my line, which is sufficient enough with the data and unlimited calls. But now if I were to get an iPhone 12 Pro under contract I have to switch my plan to at least postpaid 120 hence paying much more every month on top of the phone installment. If you are comfortable with prepaid and doesn't need more than what you currently have, it is wise to just buy the phone and use your CC 0% installment.

Are you want to keep subscribing to Digi or open to other telco?
Seems like monthly you’re paying rm68, which means in 2 years, you’re paying rm68 x 24 = rm1632.

I don't mind not having telephoto lens and lower brightness + aluminum body but one thing that really worries me is 4GB ram. That's why I'm still thinking whether I should get the pro or 12. Watched some YouTube vids and some reviewers said they hardly noticed a difference whereas some said there were some lag issues.

Also what are the reasons you choose pro or 12? Thank you for answering! say you take the minimum digi plan RM80 + RM10 = RM90 per month. For 2 years you can't change plan or downgrade it...so here is the extra you need to pay in phone plan: 90-68=22 per month. which means RM528 extra in total 2 years. If the plan can make you save RM528 on device, then it means you buy phone and get free telco service. If the plan can make you save more than RM528 on device, then it consider a good plan for saving. This post has been edited by kevinpss: Nov 7 2020, 10:08 PM

If you're satisfied with your current telco, better to sign up with telco because there's subsidy than buying outright.
Don't go for the Zerolution/PhoneFreedom/EasyPhone because even tho you get to upgrade after 2 years, I still don't think it's worth the amount unless you want to upgrade but you have to return your current phone to them.

The amount of subsidy is quite huge if u compare with retail price
256gb 12 Pro Max RRP - RM5,799 Celcom bundle price - RM4,568
That's about RM1,231 subsidize in price with commitment of RM98 for 24 months. Previously i'm paying the same amount and i think it is worth it.

Tqvm. 98 a month, is it including telco bill and phone installment?

5G service will be key to this decision. Which telco will be first to offer? 😂

Im happy with my digi data plan currently and not looking for an upgrade. So i guess it depends on your usage. Chose 12 pro because of the 6gb ram. 😃
