Just saying "...is not as rich as..." is not enough of a test. That is too subjective. Let me put it to you this way, both screens are glossy am I right? You didn't list down the specs nor model of your Vaio so I can't really compare here. Bear with me and my assumptions. I assume that the Vaio screens are even more glossy than the MacBook one's seeing as according to you, "they produce richer colours". Well more gloss = more glare. Again, I need more information on both systems. Oh, and if you look at the article it says that everyone's doing it so.... No big deal.
I would have to say both your arguments can't be held in total relation to colour reproduction. Glossiness of an LCD screen does not affect the colour reproduction as well as the glossier the more flare as it depends on the diffuser and the various layers on the LCD screen each laptop manufacturer might have.
When it comes to colour reproduction, each manufacturer will differ depending on which CCFL or LED supplier they will go for. Certain CCFL or LED's will have a different colour Gamut hence the various colour reproduction.
The various filters on the LCD (diffuser, polarizer, etc..etc..) will also determine how the image will turn up to the users (e.g. viewing angle, level of glare, etc...) also determines how the colour reproduction.
To have a good gauge, a comparison of the colour gamut from both these manufacturers would be able to determine a certain level of colour reproduction.
Hence we should all push for OLED monitors!
