Hi guys, I am having problem on choosing an outdoor water pump unit.

I am looking at Grundfos Scala 2 / Grundfos CM3-5 (0.75hp)

As the water pump will be exposed directly to sunlight and rain, need some advise on this.

Thanks.

Nothing can last forever under the sun and rain ... use something like a car rubber mat to cover and prolong it.

That is what I did for the outdoor sediment PP housing filter.

I really like the 2 units of Grundfos Scala 2 that I have installed for people (relatives). They come with 2.5 year warranty, the pressure is easily set with buttons, and the pumps ramp up as you open more taps. Great performance, although a bit expensive to buy.

Both pumps have been installed outdoors, but in the shade. As mini orchard has written, better to make some sort of shade from direct sunlight, and although the Scala 2 is water resistant, I would not want direct rain to hit it also.

Yeah, totally agrees with both of your comments.

At first I was quite firm that I am getting the Scala 2, as it runs on Sensor board, it has the features of balancing all running taps. However when I consult the plumber, he told me to avoid Scala 2 because the electronic sensor is not long lasting and advise me opt for CM3 series rclxub.gif

Looks like I will need to buy a big poly rubbish bin and do some DIY for covering the pump. laugh.gif

I know that the Scala2 had a problem with the mechanical seal leaking. Google for "Bulletin Number: SC-19-08-03". That is supposed to be solved for production after 2019 week 1 (Date code 1901) That is why Grundfos increased the warranty from 2 years to 2.5 years, to rebuild the brand name. Or maybe they want to make sure whatever problem pump is taken care under warranty. Who knows what corporate thinks. hmm.gif

Supposedly any Scala2 produced after 1901 is problem free.

CM3 is cheaper and works just as well, but single speed/pressure and some say noisy. Look at the existing booster pump thread (60+ pages!!)

Oh, why I chose Scala2? The pressure can be set low, so not scared any of the old pipes will start leaking. I believe most people don't mind low pressure, they actually want high flow rate of the water so it's nice to wash hands or shower. After all a rain shower is not high pressure, but high volume. My opinion only, please excuse me if I am wrong

You can get some 3rd party stainless steel cover to protect your pump.
