Anyone can provide troubleshooting and repair service for the original Xbox?

The very first one, before the 360...

My 1.6 PAL Xbox has a dead power supply
My 1.4 NTSC Xbox has a dead modchip, DVD, and hard disk

Or does anyone have a 1.6 power supply they’re willing to sell?

Thank you!

Both my Xbox consoles have been with https://maps.app.goo.gl/W4VK5isZpuiMWoFt8 since late September, already paid the charges RM530 to clean and spray paint the chassis of both consoles, and they are repairing only the PAL console.

The 1.6 PAL PSU is fried, so they rewired the 1.4 NTSC PSU to fit on to the PAL motherboard, but still encountering boot problems.

NTSC console is a modchip issue, and unfortunately the Aladdin modchip is soldered on to the motherboard. Would you be able to reflash the modchip?

Sucks that they're taking so long though.

I actually ordered a 128MB RAM + Xenium motherboard via eBay already, just waiting to install it in one of the chassis.

i never trust local shops with my retro stuff. i rather learn and repair them myself since we dont have good retro repair shops like in the west.
for the price you paid, you could have gotten a 2nd hand xbox from carousell or ebay. i got my 128mb modded US xbox from ebay for less than RM500. been playing virtua cop 3, ghost squad and outrun 2 chihiro games with it. PAL xbox dont have 720p and 1080i unless you mod it. i generally dont mess with PAL consoles from the pre HD era. too much trouble. even people in PAL countries know about the problems. some of them import NTSC consoles from america to avoid those problems.

now im just waiting for the makemhz hdmi mod. have completed my redump set on the hdd.

i have the disc to reflash the modchip but i cant help you if anything goes wrong. you can replace the modchip or just tsop it.
my modchip went bad and i just removed the modchip and tsop my xbox. much better since 1 less component failure point. the modchip is old and unreliable now. you could buy new ones though. i have 1 unused aladdin modchip.

the reboot issue might be corroded traces.

http://www.gametechwiki.com/w/index.php/Xb...irst%20affected.

might be better to check the 1.4 xbox for any leaking capacitors. if the ntsc xbos just have modchip problem, just get it back before it get damaged. taking long time doesnt inspire confidence.

the capacitors near the CPU are prone to leak too. mine did and i have to replace them.
my US xbox was not bulging or leaking but when playing soul calibur 2, there are weird colors on the characters during movement. replaced the caps and all is good again.
so i recommend changing all the caps on 20-30 years old consoles prior to the 7th generation. i bought the cap kits from console5.

Xbox won't Power On
Completely unplug your controllers from the Xbox and try starting it. Sometimes if a controller is plugged in half way, the console will not start. If that doesn't fix it, try an option below.

Keep in mind that you can only replace:
1.0/1.1 power supplies with 1.0/1.1 power supplies
1.2-1.5 power supplies with 1.2-1.5 power supplies
1.6/1.6b power supplies with 1.6/1.6b power supplies

Checking the Q7C2 Transistor (1.6 Xboxes)
An issue exclusive to 1.6 Xboxes; check the Q7C2 transistor to make sure it is above 3.3V. If it drops below 3.3V, the Xbox will not boot. It can be replaced with a new transistor with part number MMBT3906LT1.

Aladdin modchip!! now that brings back good/bad memories! biggrin.gif

bad:
many years back I brought my xbox with a faulty modchip for repair at a popular game shop in curve, owner himself promised me he can do it personally, not thru the shop, paid him RM50 deposit, waited a month yet he still can't repair it nor bother to update me on the repair status. Took back the console and found all 4 case screws are missing, and he can't find it anywhere, that was the last time I stepped into that shop till today.

the good:
brought the console to another tiny game shoplot and pertama complex, Bernard the super friendly owner replaced the busted chip on the spot with aladdin, chit chat with me while doing it, served me drinking water also, took less than 30mins, cost me only RM50. Bought some extra stuffs from him on the spot, Loyal customer with him till I left KL

My hands aren't very stable, so I don't dare do any soldering on motherboards.

They are still working on the XBox, it is now able to power on (some progress I guess), but it powers off by itself intermittently sad.gif

From the sound of things, I don't mind sending my Xboxes to you for repairs if it doesn't get done within two weeks, as he said he only needs two more weeks.

The softmod stuff (i.e. nulling the HDD key, installing 1TB HDD) I have done it myself using the Hexen 2020 disc smile.gif

I am just not good with hardware repairs

That sucks...

I don't have much experience like this, haven't been to these independent game shops since I bought my PS2 back in 2002 (which is still working).

Is this Bernard still there? I do not recall seeing game shop in Pertama...

A lot of gameshops are full of horseshit. I had 2 bad experiences with Xbox repair too. Both cases done at Summit. Forgot the name of the shop. The done near the old MPH location.

Case no 1: One of the controller ports was damaged. It doesn't detect a gamepad when connected to it. I sent it to them for repair, and it took maybe 6 or 8 months. I kept pestering them by calling and paying a visit over many months. The good news is, it got fixed. The bad news is, it wasn't the one I sent. I guarantee that they weren't able to figure out how to fix it, so they just gave me another Xbox. It had a different serial number, none of the profiles on the hard disk was mine, and the one they gave me had scratches where mine didn't. There goes hundreds of gaming hours I'm never getting back.

Case no 2: One of my ex colleagues had an Xbox that will immediately power on when connected to power. And it no longer plays any games. Just stays on the dashboard. So I stupidly sent it to the same shop, thinking it shouldn't be that big a job. Well, this time it took almost as long, and they completely fooked up the Xbox. Where it could at least power up before, now it's just dead. I took it back and gave it back to the owner, who wasn't that upset to be honest. He was already thinking of getting rid of it anyway.

Man, that sucks!

All the more reason for someone to rise up to the challenge to do proper retro console repairs here in Malaysia.

Planning to learn how to do soldering next year haha smile.gif

Haven't been to a gameshop since I bought my modded PS2 back in 2002. It was from Mario Electronics in KOMTAR Penang.

Fortunately my PS2 is still going strong, and I now have a 2TB hard disk installed in it running Open PS2 Loader. Only thing that died is the DVD drive belt, which I am not gonna bother replacing.

This Xbox is the first time I am facing such difficulties with a gaming console.

Nope, he closed his shop there many years back and change to doing it online, but he's been MIA for many years here as well, no idea where is he now.

Yes

I bought an original Sony network adapter from eBay 6-7 years ago and was using a 160GB IDE hard disk... modified it with a SATA board early this year and upgraded to 2TB

Xbox may be a superior machine, but PS2 had a much better library. I love the 5th and 6th gen consoles, so I am slowly collecting the non-Nintendo consoles.

Planning to get a Dreamcast next year.
