(1) Wee Kiat / FCUK89 - thanks for the trade! Much appreciated. If you need anything else, check out http://playbook.wordpress.com

(2) Karry - sorry to hear about your leg. Hope you get better soon. Played at CM Mid Valley in the morning till after lunch, at Manawerx in the late afternoon. Will probably stick to CM Mid Valley again in future.... it's cosy and comfortable thumbup.gif Keep you posted on that.

Need lots of deck ideas for nationals! All suggestions welcome biggrin.gif

Hi everyone,

Just checking if anyone's interested in Standard & Draft practice for Nationals.

Venue: Comics-Mart, Mid-Valley (Opposite the fitness centre)
Time: 11am to 3pm (Depending on Vincent / Aniki / Jude, we may continue having constructed & draft here into the evening)
Date: Saturday, 18 August 2007

Take care.

Regards,
Mark

New posts up at http://playbook.wordpress.com

All those who messaged me re: cards, please note you can reconfirm your orders with me on Friday night / Sat morning, and pick it up at Comics Mart Mid-Valley (or you can pick it up on Sunday at the qualifier).

P.S. POKER - There's a poker session at 8pm in PJ on Sat night. For those who are interested, let me know. It's a World Poker Tournament type of format with periodic blind raising. PM me.

Hiya evo...

(1) See the PMs on the cards you need.

(2) Chapin advocates dropping the Korlash. He went 6-1 in the Constructed portion and most of his matches, he sideboarded out Korlash. For the full play-by-play on this deck, check out the Relic Control articles on StarCityGames Premium. Either available via Premium membership... or you can check it out for free at http://playbook.wordpress.com biggrin.gif

Look for the Pat Chapin Innovations: Relic Control reports under the StarCityGames Premium category on http://playbook.wordpress.com.

Regards,
Mark
http://playbook.wordpress.com

p.s. fcuk89, not sure yet about the draft. If we have a draft, it will probably be after 230-3pm. Will need to see if vincent / aniki / jude want to move the al-esfan crowd over. If they do, then we should easily have 6-10 drafters. And Comics Mart Mid Valley can be our new home!!! rclxms.gif

Not *my* article blush.gif

Chapin's article. Chapin's thoughts. Chapin's innovation...

Anyway, have also put up a Magic tournament calendar on the site (http://playbook.wordpress.com). Will fill in with more details as it goes along.

Luke's deck - Red / Green, not Red Deck Wins, right?

I saw 2 Tarmogoyfs of his that got Faith's Fettered by Faruqi =)

Peter - Congrats!

Added on August 20, 2007, 7:53 amNizam's deck was rather cool, very unique. Who took him out of top 4?

His deck plays 4 Utopia Sprawl, 4 BoP, 4 Relic, 3 Scion, 4 Summoner's Pact, 4 Glittering Wish, Numot, Oros, Teneb, Scourge, Nicol Bolas...

The sideboard is very innovative - various solutions - Scion, Twister, Dark Heart of the Wood, Pride of the Clouds, etc.

but how can it be a combo deck i dun really get it lol...
*
I really should let the players who got raped on turn 4 tell you but here goes...

Turn one: Land, BOP / Sprawl (the choice of colour depends on the land you have)
Turn two: Land, Tap for 3 mana to get Relic. Tap Relic at end of opponent's turn.
Turn three: Choose appropriate mana from Relic counter. Land, Tap for 5 mana (including Relic & Relic counter). Cast Scion.
Turn four: Swing with Scion, use 2 mana to fetch:
(a) Nicol Bolas - 7 damage & dump his hand
(b) Numot - 6 damage & destroy 2 lands
© Oros - 6 damage & destroy his weenie patrol
(d) Scourge - 6 damage & destroy his weenie patrol too!

Subsequently, Swing with Scion, Make those Transformer noises, And Become Teneb the Gravedigger/Harvester & Fetch one of those dragons you previously discarded (in this meta, probably Oros or Scourge).

You can also GlitWish into Scion (2 mana + 5 mana + leave 2 mana open to transform in case someone tries to Char it).
Or Pact into Scion (5 mana + leave 2 mana open to transform in case someone tries to Char it) - Next turn, pay the Pact upkeep and transform into the Weapon of your Choice.

Watching him play, the intention is not always to pull a Transformer. Sometimes beating with a 4/4 flyer that quick is enough. Especially if you have a backup 4/4.

QUOTE(retep @ Aug 20 2007, 04:33 PM)
Because he play wishes, he can simply go fetch a Debtor's Kneel and reanimate for the win. Otherwise, he can tutor Scion using the pact, and God forbid, he can actually hard cast the other dragons if he draws them. That deck dies to hard counters though -- the reason why he didn't made it to the top 4 (he lost to omnicord).

As for me, I was lucky enough to beat Project X with MGA -- a damn impossible matchup imo.
*
Yes, i think you are right - it suffers if the scion is countered / killed. That's where his most difficult games were. But as you mentioned, he can wish a scion back out from the board. The debtor's knell is a good idea. But he showed me his entire sideboard =) No debtor's knell there. There were a few slots that I think he could then use for debtor's knell. He had some wall of roots in the sideboard to board in against aggro.

Oh, he had rise/fall! To fetch a dead dragon. If you see him around, you should ask him to show you the sideboard. It's very neatly designed.

Added on August 20, 2007, 11:43 pmCome to think of it - the rise/fall solution is probably better - it's quicker - he just needs to grab that dragon back. Debtor's knell is great but more mana-intensive?

SUMMER OF MAGIC DRAFT @ CCE - TOMORROW (25/8)
Interested?

Hi - After Hari's well-organised Summer of Magic Draft yesterday, I am trying to find out if anyone else is interested to turn up. This is a really good draft format, with 1st place getting 4 boosters, 2nd place getting 2 boosters, 3rd and 4th place getting 1 booster, not to mention the Summer of Magic Promo foils.

I am proposing to organise another session tomorrow late morning at Century Comics Enterprise (CCE), from 11am onwards. Is anyone interested? Add a comment, or email me at sidneysomerville(at)yahoo.com, or text me at zero(one)six(three)five(five)nine(five)five(one).

Regards,
Mark

P.S. I have been receiving a lot of enquiries re: http://playbook.wordpress.com. The site is down until after the National Championships. As for those who sent in card orders, please email me directly at sidneysomerville(at)yahoo.com and I will see what I can do about fulfilling them for your National decks.

Added on August 24, 2007, 2:32 pmHari - Thanks a lot for organising yesterday & inviting me. Very well-organised. Lots of fun.

Nice report.

I played B/U like Edwin. Extirpates, Leylines for Dredge Control, splash white for moats, Maindeck Damnations. Got raped over and over again by aggro haha.

On a very special note, I accomplished something few have ever seen =)

I managed to end Day 1 at 4-3. On the back of 3 Byes =))) Unbelievable, right? hahaha....

I played 2 hours of constructed (getting suckered 0-2 twice), then had an extremely long & magnificent lunch due to my bye. Following which, I had played Joe Soh and got kicked... yes, another 0-2. Then, I had another bye =) I played the last round of Draft Pod 1, starting off with... yes, another loss... but managed to scrape together a 2-1 win. Then, we started Draft Pod 2. And I had another bye, so I went home early haha =)

God, what silliness on my part.

p.s. i took another 0-2 loss next morning, then took a 2-1 win, went 5-4 (or 2-4 if you extract out the 3 byes), and happily dropped from Constructed, consigning this terrible Nationals experience to the wastebin of time....

QUOTE(blade825 @ Sep 3 2007, 02:03 PM)
allrites report of the day for Nationals... I seem to have some mood 2 write a lil .... Nats Malaysia Started off with 75 Players. Pretty much a low turn out for this year. A number of notable players were missing from the tourney especialli Albertus Law .

3 Rounds of Constructed were 1st played with none other then the infamous Jude James going 3-0. The room was abuzz about his infamous 3-0.

@ 2.15pm Draft started with Jude james in POD 1 & the last Pod having
Vincent Gan , Ikmal (ikky) , Peter , Fendy ( he wont the rm500 tourney ). Then we had draft pod 2 and 1 round of draft match.

The day ended with Jude`s magnificent run looking trashy and some players doing realli well. By then Terry had lost 4 matches. Therefore he dropped.

The following day 2 more rounds of draft and the constructed begin again. Jude lost in the constructed matchup and subsequently dropped.

The final Top 8 decks were

1. Wong Weng Sheng - Dredge deck running akroma and that special angel that u gain life according 2 the no of creatures in the graveyard.

2. Teh Soon Leong - dunno if gt his name right. Penang player playin Angel Blink with a special red akroma in the sb which rapes mirror matches.

3. Edwin " lala chai " - running a korlash teachings UB deck

4. Aw Yong Wai Kin - Angel blink

i do not know the 5-8 ranking therefore im just simply writing down the ranking

5. Raj - BWU Matyr gain life gay deck that pretty much is supposedly gay

6. Adrian Kuan - Omnichord

7. Hafiz - RG i think

8. Mun Yip - Storm deck

What cards do you have? Will you available to meet up to sell your cards? I am planning to be at Comics Corner DJ / Manawerx tomorrow - can go to either depending on which is convenient for you.

Added on September 7, 2007, 11:31 amEsca_flo: Have got lots of free stuff, maybe you can use it to start up your collection again. It's just gathering dust in a corner of my room. I can bring it for you at the pre-release (put in a small box / bag for you).

Cards I am looking for: Funeral Charm. If you have foil funeral charms, please PM me. I am also looking for some uncommons - Future Sight. If you have surplus uncommons from this set, PM me.

P.S. Tarmogoyfs for sale @55 each Have always been selling at this price, and will keep selling at this price... think I have 5 left for sale. Just PM if you are interested. I delivered one to Wee Kiat / FCUK89 last time at Manawerx, so I can do the same process again, just give me advance notice.

Yeah you should join the PG one if you have any chance, because PG ones are really damn fun...
The time would be 10.30 if I am not wrong, and the location would be at Midlands Park (next to Berjaya Times Square).

Location of the shop, 4th floor Midland Park. Shop name is 2020 book store, formerly known as NovelHut.

Trust me, it is always fun to be there...

Agree. I think the Penangites are amazingly fun & friendly people. When you get to know marcus, ah beng, soon leong, mun wye, etc. you will find them a very fun & friendly community. I highly recommend playing there. And goodness, some of their collections... it's just amazing. Drool-worthy. Playsets of foil ravnica block duals, etc. Gorgeous collections by serious collectors there.

QUOTE(somebody19 @ Sep 7 2007, 01:13 PM)
Hey there guys, I'm totally new to Magic, haven't even gotten the deck but from reading the sites, it seems like a really nice game I would hate to pass down, and frankly since I have the dough now, I'd definitely like to pick it up as a hobby.

Problem is though, none of my friends play Magic, and I'm sure it'd be pretty dumb to play Magic without having the community to play with it . I stay in SS19, and was wondering if there are places where I can go to play Magic with random people casually to improve my skills in the game.

This is a nice thread set up too, so I'm hoping for some tips on how to get started from you guys too lol. Which deck should I start of with really? I was thinking maybe a Time Spiral deck?

Thanks in advance.
*
Hi

The best way to get started is:

(1) Find a customer-friendly shop with a nice pool of players. For this purpose, I recommend Manawerx (SS14, near Armada & Jaya 33), Comics Corner Damansara Jaya, or Century Comics (Old Klang Road). This is very important, as you will have a really good pool of players / shopkeepers who can spar with you, guide you, etc.

(2) Go to a pre-release. The next one is Lorwyn. Can someone post the details of the Lorwyn pre-release to him? The reason is that the interaction of the majority of players at pre-releases is very friendly. It's a great way to pick up cards for cheap.

I have a tonne of freebie stuff that I can pass to you so that you can get started, if you want. I will bring them in a plastic bag / box, just let me know in advance if you are coming to e.g. pre-release. I usually bring small piles of this stuff and leave them at tables around the pre-release site, so that new players can just take them away from me (it's just surplus commons, uncommons).

Take care,
Mark
