Hi guys,

Didn't want to start a whole new thread since this discussion is ongoing. Does anyone know when the 65PUT8215/68 will be available in
the local market? I have asked a few Philips dealers in KL and JB but none have been able to provide a firm answer. The 55 and 70 inch
versions are being sold by a few sellers online but no news about the 65 inch though ...

Cheers,
V.

Try contact Desa Home Theater. They might be able assist. Currently they having promo you can trade in your old TV to offset the purchase price.

I just bought from them 50PUT8215 and traded in my old LED TV. The new TV has very good picture sharpness and color. Worth to buy.

I was thinking of getting this tv as well, how's your experience so far with it any pros and cons? Also any members here have experience with their after sales service? Do appreciate your feedback, thank you
*
This model is an android tv. So you can practically install any apps from Google playstore. I installed unifi playtv and it works well with the philips remote controller. However was not able to find Astro apps in the playstore.

It also comes perintalled with youtube n Netflix. YouTube plays hdr video but I can't check Netflix as I don't have an account.

TV picture is sharp and detail and can upscale full HD to UHD. Not bad too wt the upscaled picture.

Sound can support Dolby Atmos and backward compatible to the other audio formats like DD5.1 and DTS. However one of my file in my USB pendrive when i play Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 there was video but no audio/sound. Not sure why.

Overall I'm happy wt this product and still tinkering on its other features. I don't have any cons except from the above that I've mentioned.

I can't comment on Desa after sales service but the installer (father n son team) who came to my house was very professional and did the initial setup and setting for me.

And one other thing i took up their extended 2+3 years warranty for my piece of mind. You can however opt not to take it up.

Hi guys,

Anyone using Philips 8215 here? Can I get ur short review?

I am considering to purchase the 50 inch model. Tq
*
I bought this model and gave a short review in post #55

After my last review, I got to test the preinstalled Netflix app. I can confirm all UHD, Dolby Vision, Surround 5.1 including Dolby Atmos movies and TV series are running perfectly on this TV. There is a setting in the TV where you can adjust Dolby Vision brightness setting when Dolby Vision's source is played.

There was 1 firmware update recently but I did not notice any changes to the UI or features of the TV.

Also tested the ARC feature working on its HDMI input. However there is no eARC. I'm hoping a future firmware upgrade will enable this feature.

I read your review. Thanks.

I’ve waffling between this and the Hisense. But with a 1K+ price difference, I might go Philips as there are many offers online at the moment. Android is good but I have an Amazon Firestick and watch everything on that.

How’s the Dolby Vision?
*
If the source is Dolby Vision, the TV will give an indication at the bottom right of the screen during first few seconds of play (if in the setting you have turn on Dolby Vision notification). There is also 5 different style of Dolby Vision settings you can choose which are HDR Personal, HDR Vivid, Dolby Vision Bright, Dolby Vision Dark & HDR Game. I find the Dolby Vision Bright to be most suitable for my liking. For me, the HDR Vivid seems too bright and the colors kind of 'cold'. I normally prefer warmer colors and i choose movie style setting for all my other sources.

I can see all the details for DV source movies even those in dark scene. An example is the tomb scene while watching Netflix Warrior Nun Season 1 Episode 10. The upscaling to 4k UHD also works well on 1080p source or even 720p source. This I tested watching the movie The Father downloaded into my media player connected to TV thru HDMI. At that time my picture style settings was set at Natural and the picture appears very sharp and kind of 'cold'.

Btw i bought the TV at Desa Home physical store at Kepong during their promo for trade-in. You can find their online store in Lz and Shopee. During my browsing at their store, I did compare this TV to other brands of equivalent value including Hisense model (i can't remember what model). The colors were beautifully produced on both TVs which I think the TVs are all set to showroom mode, so kind of difficult to asses in normal living room condition. But i did read somewhere here in another forum that Hisense TV's color reproduction is intentionally 'brighten up' and is not tuned to some kind of 'set' color band advocated by experts. That point actually put me off from buying Hisense TV and also at that time, the Hisense model did not have DV support. Anyway one man's meat is another man's poison. So the choice is yours.

eARC is a HDMI 2.1 feature. It's a hardware limitation issue not a firmware issue. If the port and chipset on the Philips PUT8215 are made to handle HDMI 2.1, then it can be solved via firmware. But I think if it was already capable, they would have enabled it at launch.

You can still feed Dolby Digital Plus (Atmos for streaming) with ARC though.

That's a sensible solution. Also because the hardware in the TVs can become obsolete, an external media player is better in the long run.

For some people who don't know much about Android and all that stuff, an all-in-one solution fits their needs.
*
Oic. Thank you for the info. Seems I will have to settle with ARC only.

Yes Dolby Digital Plus (with Atmos) working flawlessly with ARC. However Dolby TrueHD source will not output any sound thru ARC (or TV speakers).

For me, I prefer the TV to be equiped with Android rather than their proprietary OS. It gives much more freedom to download apps from Google playstore.

I just realised that there is no instructions manual other than a Quick Set Up guide.

Do you know what the differences are between the side HDMI plug on the side and the other 3 at the back? They all say ARC. So no output to soundbar eventually? I’m currently using the optical audio output to my receiver/amplifier. Is this cable enough for Dolby Atmos?

What are the two USBs for?

I find that there’s a slight brightened hue at three areas on the left side and two at the top of the screen in dark mode, but disappears  not perfect but slightly annoying.

I’m using Standard or Natural Does boy Vision setting. Movie tended to darken it a little.
*
First thing first.....congrats on your purchase

They don't provide hardcopy manuals which I guess is trying to be environment friendly. All the instructions and help is set inside the TV. When you press setting, at the bottom left to see there is Help which you then press the blue button.

You can also download the manual from their website and print it out like what I did.

All 4 HDMI inputs are the same with ARC support. So if your receiver or soundbar support ARC HDMI output, then the sound from TV will be channeled to those equipment. But do remember to go to General Settings > Easylink and select On for ARC to work. Also go to All Settings > Sound > Advanced > Audio out, and ensure HDMI sound system is selected.

As stated in the manual, SPDIF output (Digital Audio Out) will be disabled when streaming Dolby Digital Plus content. So I'm not sure if you will get sound from the optical output when you play Dolby Atmos content. For your info, I'm using HDMI ARC.

The USB at the back is 2.0 while the side USB is 3.0
You can link an air mouse using USB 2.0 and hook up a USB HDD to the USB 3.0

I don't find any bright hues on my TV. Maybe you can post snapshots of the problem here to explain what you see.

Since my last comment, I've have fine tuned the picture setting myself to be slightly warmer but using the Natural style setting when playing HDR content. When I play Dolby Vision content, it automatically goes to Dolby Vision Bright.

Hope my explanation helps you to understand the workings of your new TV. Some of those above I experiment it myself like setting the picture quality to my desired viewing preference.

Can the Digital Audio output handle ATMOS Dolby? Right now I don’t have a receiver that has Dolby Atmos yet. Just True Dolby.

But if I’m playing thru the Blu-ray player, the sound will come from there to the receiver. The only time is playing Netflix. Does any movie have 4K Dolby Atmos that can go on the Optical audio cable?
*
As what @writesimply said, i presume you will not be able to output Dolby Atmos thru the digital audio output. However I can confirm Dolby Atmos able to be output thru HDMI ARC even though my receiver does not support Atmos. Just make sure you set the Digital out format to "Multichannel" or "Stereo".

If you have a premium Netflix account, there will be plenty of Dolby Vision + Atmos sources to watch. You can try playing them and report here if there is sound coming out thru digital audio output after setting the Digital out format as above.

QUOTE(writesimply @ Jul 8 2021, 09:21 PM)
Dolby Atmos has two flavors : Embedded in Dolby Digital Plus maxed at 6.14 Mbps and embedded in Dolby TrueHD at 18 Mbps.

Right now you can just plug it in like this.
BD/media player -> Philips <- ARC -> Dolby TrueHD/DTS HDMA receiver.

It's much easier to plug all the HDMI cables into the receiver than it is to the TV.
BD/media player -> Dolby Atmos/TrueHD DTS HDMA/X receiver <- ARC -> Philips

If you get your setup right, you should be able to get Dolby Digital Plus light up on your receiver.
*
I tried both flavours. Only Atmos embedded inside Dolby Digital Plus content able to output sound thru the TV speakers or HDMI ARC (in 5.1 format which sadly is because it is HDMI 2.0 and not 2.1). Apparently this TV does not support Dolby TrueHD content.

I agree the 2nd method of plugging is easier and better in handling complex audio sources like Dolby TrueHD.

However in my case due to my receiver's HDMI output was damaged by lightning, I found an alternative method to continue using the receiver to receive audio from the same source equipment. Below is setup of my arrangement.
Source equipments - > HDMI Matrix 4x2 Switch Splitter Arc - > TV (Output A) & Receiver (Output B)

In my setup above, I get all the Dolby and DTS audio formats going into my receiver to be output into my 6.1 speakers

Regarding "5.1 format" : Dolby Digital Plus can do 7.2.4 because that's the Atmos speaker configuration. It's a lossy compression, unlike Dolby TrueHD. Dolby made sure that there's enough space to insert the Atmos metadata inside a Dolby Digital stream to make it a Dolby Atmos/Digital Plus stream.

Technically ARC doesn't have enough bandwidth to just transmit Dolby TrueHD alone. But at 18 Mbps, that's the limit for HDMI 2.0. ARC being a two-way connection cannot sustain this.
TVs sold in Malaysia has to comply with the DVB-Terrestrial/Satellite/Cable standard because that's what the government adopted. Most of Europe and the world does too. Part of that is the audio codec it must decode and that is AAC, MP-3 and AC-3 aka Dolby Digital. The mandatory decoding has to be stereo. Multichannel decoding is not mandatory so no Dolby TrueHD support for DVB.

However, inside a Dolby TrueHD/Dolby Digital Plus stream has a Dolby Digital 5.1 stream. And inside that has a mixdown Dolby Digital 2.0 stream. The Dolby decoder in TVs can look at the stream and ignore everything else and just decode the 2.0 stream.

In short, you can connect a BD player to the TV and play a BD with Dolby TrueHD. The TV will decode a stereo signal for you.

DTS is not a mandatory spec. But I think most TVs have the decoder in there as well and again, just in stereo.

That's a good bandage solution until your next upgrade. Is the splitter a HDMI 2.1 or 2.0?

6.1? Only one rear back speaker?
*
My current receiver do not support Dolby Atmos. Initially I have plans to upgrade to one which support Dolby Atmos with 7.1.2 speaker configuration. However I thought it will be useless because my current TV's HDMI ARC is 2.0 standard, which limits the return audio from TV to receiver to only 5.1 audio format. I thought need HDMI ARC 2.1 to be able to carry Dolby Digital Plus embedded with Atmos (of 7.2.4 audio signal) back to the receiver. Or did I get it wrong?

Are you saying if I invest in a receiver that support Dolby Atmos, when I use the TV's preinstalled Netflix playing content with Dolby Atmos........ and using HDMI ARC, the return audio from TV to receiver can output audio in 7.2.4 format (if I have that number of speakers)?

When I said this TV does not support Dolby TrueHD, it was because I tested playing a number of Audio Visual Test files (downloaded from web into pendrive) which contains only 1 audio stream. I know in some movies, there exist a couple of streams in various audio format which we can choose.

As for DTS format, this TV I tested can support multichannel. Again it limits to 5.1 format. DTSHD-MA in 7.1 and DTSHD-X format downconvert into 5.1 signal. Is it because of the TV's HDMI 2.0 because my receiver supports DTSHD-MA.

Splitter is a HDMI 2.0b HDCP 2.2 that supports up to 18 G Mbps

Yup only 1 rear back speaker due to room constraint and my mistake during renovation in pulling the wires. biggrin.gif

Most streaming apps don't really want to push the maximum bitrate of audio and video because the high bandwidth may get interrupted and not everybody has that kind of internet service. So they cap it both in audio and video before the video files are uploaded on their servers.

Dolby Atmos on streaming services is basically a trimmed version put inside a Dolby Digital Plus container. A Dolby Digital Plus signal can be passed through HDMI ARC. So if you replace your receiver with a Dolby Atmos/DTS-X/Auro one, you will get the 5.1.2 or 7.2.4 channels based on what the receiver can handle.

You can read the details here on Dolby.com!

But in case I'm wrong, you previously said your current setup is this.
Source equipments - > HDMI Matrix 4x2 Switch Splitter Arc - > TV (Output A) & Receiver (Output B)
So this works in getting you Dolby TrueHD and DTS HDMA, and 4K video.

I believe you also connect your Philips to your receiver with a HDMI cable to play Netflix/streaming apps on the TV. Do you get Dolby Digital Plus decoded through the receiver when playing Netflix? If the answer is yes, well there you go.

I don't know if the Philips TV support Dolby TrueHD but that bitstream cannot be passed through with ARC. Try an AV test file with only Dolby Digital Plus in case the Netflix test is inconclusive.

Well you want to make space and pull more wires before you upgrade your receiver. No point in getting one and still have the same speaker configuration. icon_rolleyes.gif

Thanks for the lesson on Dolby Atmos. I didn't realise you had written a very informative narrative on this subject in the Hisense thread until I read it. It will be beneficial to everyone if a new thread on this subject is created. Then you won't have to repeat yourself. 😅

I did not connect TV directly to receiver with HDMI as my receiver's HDMI output has been damaged by lightning. Instead to get ARC working, I connected the TV to the splitter's output with HDMI cable. Then I run an optical cable from the splitter to receiver. In this arrangement, I can get Dolby Digital Plus decoded thru the receiver when playing Netflix app in the TV.
When playing AV test files, file with DD+ in 5.1 format played out in multichannel mode but file with DD+ in 7.1 format only output picture without any sound. Is this bcoz of limitation of the optical cable in this arrangement?

Dolby Truehd files on pendrive (inserted into the USB slot) cannot be played on this TV. The file won't load at all.

On your last statement, certainly will be saving up now for future renovation with the final goal of having a 7.2.4 system installed in my home. This of course will have to get the blessing of my home minister. 😆

I love you guys! Aspick and writesimply...  notworthy.gif

This is my set-up now.
4K UHD BD Player (Sony UBP-X700) -> HDMI 2.0 -> Onkyo TX-SR606 -> HDMI (will upgrade to HDMI 2.0 next week) -> Philips 4K

user posted image

Amazon 4K Firestick with direct Ethernet connection -> Philips 4K -> Optical audio -> Onkyo

I’ve ordered black plastic/silicon fridge stands to replace those ugly brick ones but these just lift the TV perfectly to slightly above the centre speaker. The wires visible at the back are an eyesore. Will think of putting a cloth back there eventually.

My Onkyo can only do Dolby True HD as I’ve only got 2 Mission V62 stand + 1 centre speakers, with subwoofer. Might eventually get the side speakers stands but I’m happy with my set up now.

I’ll eventually upgrade my Onkyo receiver to one that can do Dolby Atmos but I only got the whole sound set up over a year ago. Got all that..speakers, subwoofer and receiver for 1.5K. Got the 4K UHD BD player off eBay USA for US$110 and RM105 postage. It’s RM1300 on Lazada!  shocking.gif

I’ve another multi-region Blu-ray player i also got from USA that can play my European Blu-ray discs. Set up is on another cupboard  stand off to the left. The little white thing on the left is my Amazon Echo Dot to stream Spotify and connected directly to the receiver.  biggrin.gif

Sorry to hijack this thread with my setup. But the Philips TV is really a good buy!
*
Hahaha that's the purpose of this forum. We share our knowledge and help others in understanding better the products they intend to buy.

Nice setup. Looks impressive and intimidating with the 2 tower speakers. 😄

I can't help notice the support you use for your TV. I had the same problem with the centre speaker. In my case I recycle all my obsolete business cards and it's plastic holders, wrapped them with black tape to become the TV's support.

user posted image

I used to own a basic 5.1 Onkyo receiver paired with 2 Mission MX5 tower speakers and Mordaunt-Short for centre speaker and subwoofer. When I decided to upgrade, I compared and found Marantz receiver to best complement the Mission speakers. The combination works well to bring out the 'warm' sound of any music. Details were also clearly heard during high octane movie playbacks. Alas my Marantz broke after 5 years and had to settle with a 2nd hand Yamaha receiver as could not afford the premium pricing of these receivers.

Have you tried playing Dolby Digital Plus content on the TV and is there sound coming thru the optical cable to your receiver? Are you getting multichannel sound?

I’m not sure about multi channel but the receiver is showing Dolby True HD on it but as I’ only got 3 speakers, there’s no surround. I haven’t streamed anything yet other than some 4K destination videos on YouTube. The sound quality sounds better too though.
Showing Dolby TrueHD when playing your source material from your UHD Bluray player? That will be correct if your current arrangement as follow: UHD BD player -> Receiver -> TV

Try switching the arrangement as follow: UHD BD player -> TV -> (optical cable) -> Receiver
Then play a UHD Bluray disk and choose the audio stream with "Dolby TrueHD" (not "Dolby Digital 5.1 or 7.1)
I doubt you can still get Dolby TrueHD on your receiver.

QUOTE(GuyB @ Jul 11 2021, 01:34 PM)
What side stand speakers do you recommend for the overall effect? I see many choices eg 2nd hand Mission mini speakers on eBay UK but the postage to get here will be exorbitant. I like Onkyo only because of their HDMI inputs so my next upgrade will probably be them too. Why do they cost so high in Malaysia considering they’re made here!
*
I will suggest getting a pair of Mission surround speakers to complement your existing Mission front speakers. Or any bookshelf speakers, preferably British brand to complement the 'warm' sound of your equipment.

QUOTE(GuyB @ Jul 13 2021, 12:37 PM)
Well, there’s no input for my Onkyo from the TV (when using the Firestick). Im only using the Optical Audio cable for sound, and turn on CBL/SAT as the audio. I’ll have to wait till I get my upgraded receiver with Dolby Atmos, then the HDMI ARC will replace the Optical Audio cable. However , do you mean, I can connect the HDMI 2.0 from TV back to the receiver under CBL/SAT? Can a normal HDMI cable handle ARC? It’s just sound right?
*
I do not think connecting using HDMI cable from TV to your receiver under CBL/SAT (HDMI in port) will work (see my comment below on the experiment I did). Neither will it work with your current HDMI cable from receiver HDMI out port to TV HDMI in port. That is because your receiver model does not have ARC support.

QUOTE(writesimply @ Jul 11 2021, 10:29 PM)
So your HDMI splitter is also a switcher? As in multiple players connected to it and then one HDMI cable goes into the receiver and the other one to the receiver?
Yes its a 4x2 splitter switcher with ARC and EDID as shown in photo below. I got three sources (TV box, Bluray player & Media Player) each with a HDMI cable going into this thing. Then two HDMI cables coming out from it, one to TV and the other to receiver. I also have an optical cable coming out from it to the receiver in oreder to pass the audio return signal from TV to the receiver.

QUOTE(writesimply @ Jul 11 2021, 10:29 PM)
Coming back to the TV and the receiver. How are you connecting them? Just using the optical cable? Have you tried connecting the TV to the receiver using one of the inputs on the receiver? This might work in giving you Dolby Digital Plus.
The splitter switcher is connecting TV to the receiver only for purpose of carrying audio return signal as follow:
TV <-(Audio & Visual) - HDMI cable - (Audio Return)-> Splitter Switcher -> Optical cable (Audio Return)-> Receiver

Connecting TV to any of the inputs of the receiver will not produce any sound.

QUOTE(writesimply @ Jul 11 2021, 10:29 PM)
I assume you're using the built-in media player on the TV. I think you have the same TV as GuyB, right? The Philips PUT8215 with Android TV OS?

Have you installed Kodi and tried playing from there? With Kodi, the files can be on the USB flashdrive or your home NAS. It can play them in any format, even in 3D. Also you can enable audio passthrough.
*
The built-in media player on the TV cannot decode Dolby TrueHD audio format. The files will not load at all.

I installed Kodi 19.1 into the TV and played the same files. When I enable audio passthrough, I found that Dolby TrueHD files can be played but the receiver display PCM 2.0 with only stereo sound.

Is there huge difference on picture quality between these model and put8215/put7374?

Put aside tv OS coz will pair TV with tivo4k.

PUT6654 & PUT6604 are previous year model. Current model in the market are PUT8215 & PUT7374.

I do not think anyone can help on picture quality unless he has both models at home installed side by side to compare. You can however try visiting AV showrooms which have these models to compare them yourself.

It's the limitation of the Google player. They should update it because it's not just for phones anymore.
Agreed. Google need to update their player as more Android TVs are being released.

There is a configuration for this. Of course, you'll only get Dolby Digital/DTS and not THD/HDMA because you're playing the file via Kodi on the TV. If you're using Kodi using a TV box, you will get THD/HDMA.

Basically, you have to set the speakers to 2.0. It's completely counterintuitive to how we think the player setup to be.
Thanks bro for pointing me to the link. It has solved my problem of attempting to play Dolby Vision with TrueHD+Atmos content files thru the TV USB port. Surround sound going into my receiver now.

Agree too completely counterintuitive to what we think. Wonder are there any further tricks to setting the Kodi player.
