I wonder if this is the right thread to ask something regarding SATA Mode IDE vs ACHI but guess I post it here at the moment since both are related.

Recently I just bought the 500GB Seagate 7200.11 32MB SATAII NCQ drive. My motherboard is using ICH9R chipset which support the ACHI mode *I guess as it available in my BIOS option*.

Currently I'm running on SATA Mode IDE which my SATAII HDD running on UDMA Mode-5. Some people told running on SATA Mode ACHI will enable UDMA Mode-6. I did some reading from the Internet (as I don't know much regarding ACHI) and it seem to offers benefits over SATA Mode IDE such as NCQ available? unsure.gif

I know that switching into ACHI mode will need reinstallation of the OS and also loading SATA driver before the OS installation. I wonder if ACHI will have noticeable performance gain and features over IDE? Anyone care to elaborate and share? unsure.gif

I'm not very good in this stuffs but i'll try answer you with what i know so it might be wrong...Actually you can get better answers from the hardware Q&A section.

If like what you said, enabling AHCI does make features such as NCQ available, then yes i think its possible that there will be slight performance increase. Cause from what i know NCQ alone does speed up the reading of data from the hard disk platter. Instead of reading multiple times for a data, NCQ queue all the data it needs to collect and sends to the pointer at one time to be read at one shot thus speeding it up.

But that's just what i think... Like i said, you'll get more answers from the hardware guru in the hardware Q&A section...  tongue.gif

Thanks for your help anyway, your guide on Slipsteam the Windows BootDisk with SATA driver been great. Although I doesn't need it at the moment since I decided not to go for AHCI mode already, it's still something great to learn wink.gif.

Reuben already shared his experience on SATA IDE and AHCI mode with us along with some knowledge and statement on the NCQ as well (refer: http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopi...ost&p=15630042). In summary, NCQ would only benefits and gain performance in server where more than hundreds access at one time. It will be a fallback and slowdown if used for single user smile.gif.

Did the slipsteam for MassStorage, everything worked like a charm and now I'm on AHCI SATA mode cool2.gif
