All the koreans yang aku pernah berborak, memang susah sikit nak komunikasi. Aku kena tune rendah banyak dari kebiasaan.

Biar markah rendah asalkan komunikasi berkesan.

The thing is that Koreans have tough English exams but all they do is memorize and regurgitate so they may not be fluent.

On the other hand, Malaysians memorize and regurgitate for easy English exams and is still not fluent.

Don't be too proud. laugh.gif

I’m not too proud because all these managers and vendors at my workplace from korea cannot even understand simple written english.
If their english exams are harder than us why can’t they even understand?
They can’t converse well in english, it’s okay I will write in english.
They still can’t fucking understand. Working with them for 4 years now
It seems that they’re the one that is too proud.
Korea this great, korea that great.
I’m not proud, just wondering.

Memorising is first step to learning

That's one thing Chinese schools got right

Our problem is that our Govt keeps yakking about kritis dan kreatif when we can't even accomplish step one (and they're happy to keep it that way because memorising doesn't create opportunity for songlap)

Lol our local English close eye can get A1/A+.

If there is an unfailable subject, it’s English.

You will know if a person is truly dumb or not by seeing if they get anything less than an A in English .

TOIEC and SPM are at the same level? I don't know because only go to school until standard 6. Parents with no money have to find a job myself.

Still, I can understand, read, write, and speak basic English. In fact, I thing any Malaysian 40s and below also the same. 3 or more classes per week for 11 years mandatory. 🤭

Often watch Running Man with my wife. The only cast who can speak proper English is Kim Jong Kook and it is only because he used to live in the USA. Others all sampah level having hard time trying to converse with the likes of Tom Cruise and Ryan Reynolds.

Er, they're english exam might be very tough. But compare to the usage of English in their daily life it's quite low compare to most of us here in Msia as they speak Korean at work & with each other most of the time. Due to this they're not that confident to converse in English, true story shared by my Korean language teacher.

if our english is "easy"
thn there wouldn't be so much case of candidate saying "boleh cakap melayu tak or asking the interviewer can speak chinese or not" in interview being said in /k/

LOL at some people actually trying to justify that Korean has better English than us.

We can all speak English,be it broken or not but enough for basic communication.

Korean on the other hand, maybe can write well but conversation-wise no.

LOL at some people actually trying to justify that Korean has better English than us.

We can all speak English,be it broken or not but enough for basic communication.

Korean on the other hand, maybe can write well but conversation-wise no.
*
I doubt they can write well too.

Actually english angmoh find korean punya english exam difficult too (you can find the videos in youtube). But korean students admitted that they were trained to answer those exam questions at schools -- in other words, the difficult questions become less difficult if you were trained for years to answer them, but can they really converse or write in english? not really.

you should know 10A in SPM doesn't mean you have perfect english, because it covers other subjects too..

you want a fair comparison, take this TOEIC to our Muet band 6 student then we talk...

Lol..certainly many people still don't really know how koreans' english level are. Generally, they are not only horrible at speaking, they also terrible at speaking, listening and writing. Malaysians' english level are way way better in every aspect. Not that Malaysians are that good, many are terrible also but in average we are quite okay. Just check the english proficiency ranking. At one point we even surpassed Singapore as no.1 in Asia, but now we dropped behind Singapore and Philippine.

It doesn't matter if their test are harder, but the average score for the test also much2 lower than our SPM despite they being so studious(to the point only sleep 3,4 hours only and spent the rest of time studying) and they took only few subjects compare to us.

By the way, i've seen their english SAT and for me it's not really more difficult, they just trying to make it more 'fancy' with their sentences and questions. For me it's not really necessary, and it's not correct way to educate people to learn english so that might explain why their comprehension level are bad. I've taken IELTS before, and the difficulty level and how they construct the questions are slightly better, but it's more similar to our SPM than Korean english SAT.

Same, our standards down the drain since 1980 when buttseks minister take over as Edu minister. Even chinese and malays speak english worse than their grandparents. Also write also worse than speak since can't cut and paste. 50% here in /k can be good example.

If every exam you study for is tough and there is very few English media around you, how well do you think you will learn English in their environment? Some YouTuber from UK has explained it before, it's not that they don't know English, it's just that they lack speaking practice and the confidence to speak it because they had a hard time learning it.

Just be considerate. Not every country is like Malaysia.

P.S. I have met Koreans with fluent English so let's not generalize.

beside my shop thr is a korean restaurant run by korean nationals, got chnged a few korean owners n staffs before, i think i met around 10 diff korean ppl since they opened

n not a single one of them can speak decent english or at least communicate well in basic english

everytime they come we hav a hard time understnding wat they say, cannot pronounce words well n most of the time we just use hand or google the pic to communicate

thr was a young korean guy that have decent english but his pronounciation is also very off n he can barely complete a sentence in english oso, most of the time just say one word oni, like if he wan to buy cable then he will just say "cable, cable?" instead of "u sell cable here?"

based on this video, we can see that Malaysia's English syllabus actually teaches you to comprehend and understand English. Korea's however is just made hard for the sake of being hard which in all honestly is pointless, stupid and typical syiok sendiri exam.

Reminds me of an Enid Blyton children's book i read when i was a kid. The Enid Blyton Book Of Brownies. There is a land of clever ppl and everyone there speaks in rhyme. U speak in any other way = u r stupid and u get a nice spanking. Then everyday the smartest person will ask everyone a riddle, if u cannot answer it you're stupid and will kena spanking again. All the ppl in the land will answer the riddles with gibberish and they will get away with it. Those who questions the logic behind the riddle = u guessed it right.... spanking. Total syiok sendiri culture.

No, I didn't have to apply for any local universities - because (and I will remember this for as long as I live - or at least until dementia decimates my hippocampal synapses) my Colombo Plan Commonwealth Scholarship award came in a thick A4 sized brown envelope on the eve of my final Biology (essay) paper of my STPM. To be honest, I almost didn't turn up for that paper because, well, I didn't need to - I was going to University to study medicine. But, being the stoic son of an Asian tiger mom, I turned up anyway, did what I had to do, and stepped out of the school hall like it was just another walk in the park.

And no, I didn't fumble on the last paper:

[attachmentid=10559049]

So, no I didn't apply ... but, if I had, I would have applied for UM.

Whether I'd get in or not, well, that's a question I'll never know the answer.

Back in my days, that was the max you could take for the STPM. I'm a dinosaur, mate. That certificate is like more than 30 years old!

The offer was conditional on me securing the scholarship - what and how I did for the STPM was irrelevant to them, perhaps also because of this:

Our Malaysian education was highly regarded in the past. ASEAN scholars from Malaysia studying in Singapore were feared for their superior mathematics and science understanding. And I found that my education foundation in Malaysia was instrumental in helping me excel in my medical studies in Australia.

I don’t know what the situation is like today but back then, we wore the fact that we were Malaysian educated in the Malaysian school system like it was a badge of pride.

yes in a way...very literal way. the memorizing method used in chinese school works... up to the point they converse. my experience talking to chinese school educated ppl, the one word i can put to it is literal. they don't understand the side meaning, puns, jokes, references ... nothing. so when conversing with them dont use fancy english, drop the bombastic words, go simple and the conversation will work.

As a proportion of total student population? Measured by vocabulary? Probably

In fact it's quite likely more SJKC school graduates know more chinese words than SK school graduates know BM words, simply due to the stress placed on vocabulary by the SJKC system

Note that I'm not extolling the complete mastery of a language by the SJKC system. For example one clear area they fail is in grammar, because the typical SJKC grad applies that big vocabulary in Chinese syntax, which is how we get the majority of Manglish and Singlish

I'm just saying that memorisation is the first step of learning, and that the SK system already fails at this first point whereas the SJKC system doesn't.

From there you can infer for yourself how effective our national education is.

IMO, it's not that it has no standard, it feels like the exam board here treats English as a language rather than a subject. And, it seems like the Korean exam board treats it as a subject...

Back in my days, that was the max you could take for the STPM. I'm a dinosaur, mate. That certificate is like more than 30 years old!

The offer was conditional on me securing the scholarship - what and how I did for the STPM was irrelevant to them, perhaps also because of this:

I wouldn’t be surprised bro. I’m an oldfag.

Old enough to get one of the last Colombo Plans on offer to Malaysians before they pulled the plug on that programme.

The scholarship board wasn’t keen on a flash in the pan performance. They were looking for consistency. From my SRP (I couldn’t find my certificate sadly), to the SPM and STPM (forecast results) and also the school report book and teachers’ testimonials. That’s what they wanted.

As it turned out, they were quite accurate in placing their faith in me - I didn’t flop my STPM which meant they didn’t have to withdrawal their scholarship offer.

You can't say SK fails when most Malaysian can understands English and can speak English although most of them broken.
*
chinese school english is not broken just lack of exposure and literal. u dont get to speak english to everyone in school and outside school unless you keluarpattern la.

SK english is not broken but students who listen and learn properly gain, while those who play truant lose out big time. my time SK english teachers got cambridge qualification. some even go for master and other side courses funded by gov. i had 2 good indian teachers (cambridge), 1 good chinese teacher (cambridge+masters in english) and 1 good malay teacher over the years. the indian teachers were really free and easy, their spoken english enough to make you correct your own plus they forced students to participate in dialogues and scenarios. the chinese teacher was the technical 1. she stressed on this tense that tense so a lot of why do it like this why say it like that were answered. the malay chap was the youngest and a trainee but he brought his own ideas which were fresh and new for those of us used to the standard education module.

i beg to differ. Our SPM level English paper is so easy yet the Korean girl had problems answering some very basic comprehension questions. She even questions the question lol like wtf ?
Their Korean SAT English exam is not even testing your English proficiency. IMO you get more knowledge and understanding from our PMR English exam than their SAT.

In the vid below, fast forward to 9:30 to view the explanation by Blimey.

that's why I said they can understand what people are saying, yes, some of them have their Korean accent slang too thick for our understanding.

But then I have korean classmates in my Pre-University can speak English quite fine, side note, they went to international school locally in Malaysia for 3 years.

I only met one actual Korean in my university engineering program, who's accent in Korean is extremely horrible that I can't even understand.
But they have no issues understand the concepts explained in English at all.

u also noe hw to say the korean went to international school for 3 years, of course la he can speak well

wat we are talking about is the average korean ppl out thr, not those working professionals working in big mnc's or whatsoever

from my interaction wif real koreans also i found their english to be horrible, speaking cannot, n comprehension also most of them failed badly, ur case is u met koreans who are very educated n studied abroad, dats why the ones u met hav good english

just make it simple la, now u go korea thr and u try to speak to their ppl thr in english ask for directions etc, u see how many can answer u
