Can you tell us what issue is your knee facing? Since they checked that your knee is healthy, it's not surprising that they ask you to exercise since it could be a muscular issue rather than a joint issue. It's important to train muscles around joints as they're the ones that protect them and will, most of the time, prevent joint problems from happening.

Sounds like your current condition might be a sequela from that trauma, no wonder they asked you to exercise... Good amounts of muscles will strengthen the joint and could help improve the condition.
