Hello typing enthusiasts, I'm finally looking to take the plunge into Topre switches, currently using the Romer-g based Logitech G810 and really like the feeling of it. The keyword here is "really like", not love. So I'm still in search for the perfect keyboard for me.

So far I have the pros and cons for the two keyboards I'm looking at, I'm open to suggestions btw!

Leopold FC980C
+Generally hear good things about Leopold and their build all over the internet
-Navigation keys (Ins, Del, Home, End, PgUp, PgDn) is absent
-Out of stock

Realforce R2
+Standard keyboard layout
+In stock right now
-Could be inferior feeling, sound and build compared to Leopold?

Will I be missing out a huge difference in experience from getting a Realforce over a Leopold? I could be wrong, this is just what I've observed based on searching around. Cheers!

you might wanna try ask in mymkb group, https://www.facebook.com/groups/MalaysiaMechanicalKeyboard

the thing about typing experience is that everyone has own preferences. only first-hand experience tells the truths.

Thank you for your guidance biggrin.gif

no problem. good luck to your hunt for topre smile.gif

topre is not my cup of tea. i prefer mx style switches more.

Thanks! But so far no stock for topre so I'll just have to wait. Any reason why you didn't like topre? I know mkbs are all about preferences, would just like to know. Since way back I've been hearing mostly praises about topres.

previously i saw some at shopee; maybe they have removed them from the shelf.

this is related to my typing habit. i touch type, and i prefer low starting force and flat force rate. topre switches has its tactile bumps happen at the early stage of key travel, then free fall. this basically means i need to press harder at the first half of key travel, in order to overcome the bumps and register key press. hence i miss key presses very often when i type on topre. (unless i go back to the previous key-stomping style)

however, that's my take. more importantly, you should know that i'm a linear-only user. it's better to experience with it first-hand (join meetups; borrow it from friends, or whatnot)

Thank you so much for your opinion! This is one of the best topre switch description I've read.

It sounds like I would like linear as well, but I've always thought I would like switches with tactile bumps are the early stages. Only one way to find out biggrin.gif

Yes, buy both then give me the one you don't like!

I've got bad news for you biggrin.gif but I've yet to try topre that is.

you're very welcome smile.gif yes, keyboards will not use big words or create hypes to impress you. they just do what they do, hence first-hand experience will always tell the truths.

the more you play with different builds, the more you will accept the fact that there is no good or bad in terms of typing feels, because these qualities are subjective, built on top of individual preferences. (well, unless you have done everything wrongly; especially the basics)
*
That is a not a very flashy statement but after receiving my new kb today, it's just too true. I've tried mx red in the past and didn't like it much, after researching around hearing that different board materials and builds used could completely change the experience, I gave it another chance and it's really night and day shocking.gif

right, not all keyboards are built equally. they can be even better after tuning. that's why we spend time to explore options, learn to tune, etc. to make something closer to our expectations.
*
Talking about better after tuning, I realized my new keyboard's Windows key has a faulty key sweat.gif I think there is something wrong about the switch, pressing down feels like I'm brushing something against the wall with a lot of friction and on the release the key might just stay there a while. Quite a bummer since I really like this keyboard and I use Windows key a lot and wasn't expecting it from a brand that is very well known for quality.

Just saying, I touched type as well but I personally like both topre and light weight linears as well  biggrin.gif  But the things I'm looking for in a switch is not tactile or linear, but rather how smooth and silent the switch is.
*
Oh yes! I'm looking for how smooth (or generally how nice it feels to type on) and the sound from the keyboard. So far typing on this keyboard's mx red is like typing on creams with very minor scratching. Which brand of Topre keyboard(s) have you tried before? I'm looking to try 30g since the lightest I've tried is 45g laugh.gif

what's your board? it sounded like the windows key cap is in contact with the case, and caused this. maybe it's just misalignment; maybe it's something else.
*
Leopold FC900R. Both the community and the seller told me to pull/swap keys to narrow down the issue. Ordered some keycap pullers both locally and from China arriving maybe end of this month. Didn't dare to use the one they gave which I think it's called the keyring keycap puller or something because I heard it might scratch the keys.

oh. it might just be due to misaligned installation. my leopold (fc660m, fc750r) don't have such an issue. yes, use thinner caps might also help.

i just use the typical wire keycap puller that comes together with key cap sets. do it slowly and patiently, and you will not scratch anything.
*
You mean the issue could be raised by the thick keycap that comes with this keyboard?

Al alright, maybe if I run out of patience I'll give it a try today doing it slowly.

it shouldn't be the cause tbh. you should take a closer look to see what's going on exactly.

Pulled the keycaps and the found the cause of the stickiness was due to a adhesive residue on top of the switch shocking.gif like when you pulled off a double sided tape and a chunk of the tape is stuck there. Shocking from Leopold QC but at least the keyboard is amazing now biggrin.gif
