Follow me on my journey on Do-It-Yourself car repairs at home. Would like to share the experience and learnings to help other car enthusiast go on the same path and provide knowledge to everyone to avoid independent mechanics of pulling a fast one on you leading to unnecessary hefty repair bills (everyone has been in that situation at least once before).

More videos to come, stay tuned. Feel free to ask me any questions.

Why QuickJack is better?

Thanks! Sir you certainly have an eye for tools πŸ˜‰. I got it from Lazada RM750 can get couple 20-30 ringgit discount if got voucher.

You got that right it is a 3/8” king toyo torque wrench, good quality tool I like it. I have a Harbor Freight one can really tell the difference in quality. The pressure gauges is to troubleshoot air conditioning system.

Yes sir you can check all modules and not only that you can do resets on those modules. The capability of this tool blew me away πŸ˜†. Maybe I should do a more detailed review on this tool soon.

The price is RM2000 (hardware + pro software) but the capability of the OBD2 scanner is as good as a professional scanner costing RM3000 - RM4000. So yeah it is expensive but worth it as all modern cars now have onboard diagnostics.

Hardware can purchase online which comes with a basic android/ios app software. For the Pro version app need upgrade separately.

Whatever works for you that is the beauty of DIY. For me I was looking for a full fledge scanner that can read codes, clear codes, reset system, data logging and the coolest of all actuation test - controlling the car through a phone 🀣

I store it in those big 9L mineral bottle so it can hold two oil changes. Once full I bring to a mechanic shop nearby, they will take it and storage it for disposal. Free of charge. Actually they sell the old oil for recycling. Then the bottle can bring to recycling center RM0.50 haha

The way I look at this is not like running a business where making money is the primary objective. For me it is a hobby which I can share the learning with hopes it benefits people. A good analog is like playing sports as a hobby, you will spend money to get good sports gear but really there is no money making element it is the joy and experience that pays off hehe.

That is the beauty of DIY. You choose what level of DIY you want to be at. You can do it the most economical way or can reach my level of DIY which is close to a pro garage level 🀣.

Therefore I am open to share the true cost so you can tailor the DIY level your are suitable with. Basic level DIY don’t need to spend much even tools from Mr DIY will work.

partially agree, because the money spent on your hobby could be used more wisely to get a better ride, no need for such trouble,

but anyway, hobby is something that one pays for the interest and satisfaction in return, if someone can make use of his hobby as business, that will be the best.

Actually getting a better ride is not the best option too because cars are depreciating assets hehe. Anyway this is not a financial advise thread 🀣.

Going back to DIY, other thing I appreciate a lot is workmanship quality. Everyone remembers the time the mechanic says it is fixed but when you drive it the problem is still there. A lot of time wasted going back and forth to the workshop.

Rather than a quick jack, i was looking at building a drive on ramp with old wooden pallet wood like this guy.

This actually does not raise the car high up though. Typical this is used for lowered cars to have a slight lift to allow the hydraulic jacks to go under. Actually you can purchase ready made ones from metal which I find more sturdy. I personally don’t trust wood to carry the weight of the car.

I do not want to raise he car very high. Just enough to do some maintenance. And i definitely do not want to spend hundreds to thousands for one thing that i will only use when i like it.

Sure do go ahead with it if it fits your purpose. Do make sure you use good hard wood that can hold the weight of the car. Also the bump stop to prevent the car from falling over the ramp gives me goose bumps haha. Might want to redesign that.

I personally will never go cheap on any safety related equipment just because it is not worth it to get yourself hurt. Bare minimum for me is jack stands.

For something like oil change whereby only that little more space is needed, this method is actually really good enough. I have 2 solid pieces of wood previously from window frames that I plan to add wheels (damn heavy to carry then) to tilt and pull around for this purpose as a future small project. Its just a little too much hassle to bring out and setup the jack and stands when things as simple as oil changes are due.

Things that I've narrowed down to take note:
- floor surface must not be too slippery for it to slip when the vehicle is driven onto it (esp certain type of porch tiles)
- the approach angle from the bottom of the wheel to d lower edge of the bumper (if the ramp is too steep and too high, you might scratch or dislodge the bumper/skirt). 'steps' with sufficient spaces between them might be needed.

Get a jack with safety stand.
Only RM 500 total. You will make back in oil change after 3x service/car. If you have 2 or 3, the ROI is even faster.

I have five cars at home, so it's no brainer.

Now even cheaper as i have free engine oil. Like 90% cheaper. laugh.gif laugh.gif I just want the ramp for some simple work on another car. No point buying anything else. I even reuse old shampoo bottle to suck out brake fluid. I have used an old tropicana orange juice bottle as an expansion tank and also an old water hose as a temporary engine breather hose. laugh.gif laugh.gif

Depends on what you are comparing it to say it is too expensive. You will need to do an apple to apple comparison. So actually for the capability, portability, safety features RM7000 is reasonably priced.

I think the cheaper version is the concrete ones that car wash uses to wash under carriage. Else the metal version that can buy. Or this nail and wood version. laugh.gif

You can’t just compare based on price. It is like taking a BMW (280k ish) direct compare with Proton Perdana (130k ish). Both got 4 wheels and an engine, of course a such shallow comparison it looks crazy. Try to analyze deeper by watching my videos how I use QJ and the video below

Yup never go cheap on safety equipment, I learned through near misses I personally encountered. Because I didn’t start off having all the fancy stuff too, I start of with just a hand me down rusted wrench and incomplete socket set haha.

Over the years the money I saved through DIY from not paying others to do it and quality of work not required constant trips to the workshop for a solved-unsolved problem. I got to save enough for better equipment.

Never go cheap on equipment that keeps you safe!

Any reason why :

1) you did not do a flushing treatment first to flush out all the rusts

2) you did not use coolant? (still using pipe water which will rust the engine further)

Hi to your first question is because of time, I wanna do it but not this time round hehe. I will do it in near future in another video.

Without flushing I don’t feel using coolant will help much and probably waste money. Isually need to flush out clean only put in coolant that is why I just use back water. Another thing is convenience quickly get the job done and use the car.

How to replace a leaking cooling coil, expansion valve and drier receiver in a Proton Gen 2. I will also cover how to do a pressure test and fill refrigerant gas into the air conditioning system.

Before doing this you will need to remove the dashboard which I covered my my prior video https://youtu.be/IfUm9F5IYB4
