Those Chinese in HCM attended Chinese schools and learnt Chinese language in Cantonese dialect because most of them migrated from Canton.

Nowadays they are leaning Chinese in Mandarin.

Believe it or not, most vietnamese can speak mandarin before they even speak English.
Unfortunately, growing amount of chinese bananas in Malaysia cannot even speak basic mandarin lol.

I don’t see how that’s possible when their schools teach English and Vietnamese, not mandarin. I would say there are prob more french speakers than mandarin in Vietnam.

almost become chinese. vietnamese successfully resisted assimilation attempt by chinese since han dynasty.

hopefully, taiwanese can do the same to become its own culture distinct from chinese culture by accelerating desinization process starting from education because taiwanese is not han chinese.

What's up y'all - Vietnamese coming in peace. I'm gonna try to answer some of the questions in this thread:

"Vietnam got people with surname Trieu (Zhao in Mandarin)? Never come across any."

We do have that surname. Triệu to be exact.

"Believe it or not, most vietnamese can speak mandarin before they even speak English."

Troi oi, this is wrong on so many levels. Most Vietnamese people know "nihao" "xiexie" only. Those who can speak/read Mandarin (excluding Chinese-Vietnamese) are the ones who take classes at language schools or happen to live close to the border.

"I would say there are prob more french speakers than mandarin in Vietnam."

Same goes with the French speakers in VN, though I'd argue that there are more Chinese speakers than French speakers. Probably different back then, as I know for a fact that my great grandma did speak a bit French and even read French poems for me. tongue.gif

"North Vietnam have Chinese ancestry from the south. Many still identified themselves as Chinese ethnicity."

Not entirely sure about where our ancestry's from, BUT most Vietnamese don't identify themselves as being of Chinese descent, again, excluding the Chinese-Vietnamese ppl (mostly live in the south).

There are many Vietnamese CHinese who speak CANTONESE in Vietnam. Why? Cos their ancestors are from Guangzhou!I know cos I was there and I heard them speaking Cantonese so I asked them and they told me.

I won't ever deny that Vietnamese culture got influenced by Chinese culture. A damn lot indeed, and not just the naming system. Looks wise, I've got lots of comments saying I (Northern Viet) look Chinese from both ang moh and Chinese people. But but, unless I take the DNA test and find out this and that, I won't come out saying "Look, I have Chinese blood in me" and act as if I'm Chinese because someone tells me VNese = Chinese.

Also, just because someone here has happened to meet Mandarin- or Cantonese-speaking groups in Vietnam doesn't mean you should start generalizing that most Vietnamese can speak/read/write the two languages. That's simply not the case, I'll tell you that much. sad.gif

if you live in northern taiwan, yes, they acknowledge that taiwanese is minnan and chinese because lots of mainlanders descended from kmt refugees from china live in northern taiwan. hakka living in miaoli and hsinchu are still speaking hakka because they don't want to assimilate into taiwanese society, unlike hakka in pingtung.

try to say taiyu is minnan yu to southern taiwanese, you will be accused as communist and kuomintang sympathizer.

kinmenese of course call themselves as chinese and not taiwanese because kinmen island is closer to china than taiwan.

minnan culture is a subset of taiwanese culture. it doesn't mean that taiwanese is ethnically chinese or minnan. race is just skin deep.

han kuo yu's "love chinese culture" message in his last presidential campaign platform failed to convince taiwanese to vote for him. that's why dpp and tsai ying wen won presidential election for 2nd time. during her campaign, no one raised republic of china flag.

i lived in south and central

seems like you are just trying to play with words

whatever they call themselves is irrelevant.

i can call myself a dog but that doesn't make it true

taiwanese culture is just another sub-culture of the dominant han culture in china.

i know plenty of taiwanese who dislike kmt but still see themselves as chinese. even those who don't see themselves as Chinese citizens see themselves as ethnically and culturally part of the wider 中华民族. only deep green taiwanese(which is a minority like the pro-immediate unification group) supporters deny their heritage
