AMD plans to launch its third-generation Opteron platform in 2009 with the Sandtiger octal-core processor. Beneath Sandtiger is AMD's M-SPACE modular approach towards CPUs. M-SPACE allows AMD to mix and match CPU features for specific tasks.

2009 still far from now. The upcoming is Phenom and Barcelona. Prefer to check out this two series 1st.

yup.. and that's what ps3 core have right now.. 7 core 'on' and 1 disabled lol.. 'tho ps3 using different proc type - cell processor..

yeah, imagine the power from octal cores still a long way to go

Wonder when program will all full utilise for multicore system. For now no use talking octal and such for end user.

OKok I know this is an AMD thread. Thought I like to put in an opinion.

2009 is rather far fetch to claim in mid 2007 given the rate of how technology moves.
8 Cores processors is no more a myth but lets consider this first.

1. Intel is seeding the market and preparing 3rd party manufacturers with their new 45nm chips.
2. Intel is expected to launch the new 8 core CPUs about Mid Q4'07 early Q1'08.
3. Intel has the manufacturing capacity to produce and deliver the current 65nm as well as the coming 45nm chips.

If we put these timing against AMD I do have my question about the claims of AMD taking the lead again against Intel.

2009 comes 8 core is history. At this rate Intel will be talking about 32 cores in 2009????

It does seems to me AMD is making a last ditch attempt to challenge superiority.
My word? Too much talk yet no concrete result.

Intel 8 core chips are not coming until nehalem, which is 2H'08. AMD may have 8 core chips a little bit later than that, depending on how 45nm works out for them.

Hah..actually its 1st half. You are right though. The race is actually 45nm. For AMD the race is 45nm + productions. Who whose to say. Intel just delayed their 45nm CPUs. It should be now it has arrived if you have seen thier early year roadmap. But then again for all you know intel is just holding back. LOL.

I am actually really keen to see how AMD moves. I think it is good to have AMD because it keeps intel on its toes. Otherwise it will be like before, Intel tech really sucks....thermal prob, power prob, design prob...etc....
now ...not bad at all. At least for the "price for tech" performance.

2009...it's really long... hope they can come out earlier.. 8 core seem interesting but we need to wait for another year..duh.. the later they come out the product the worse.. i mean us as a customer, might suffer the price like in last time...

Nehalem doesn't have 8 cores. It is a super quad core.

Not even comparable. These cores are tiny, weak, and not even x86.

It is risc processors , it can run linux for sure, since it cost less and could do more, should be good enough for server like data center:)

Do more? It doesn't even have FP capability. It's only suitable for embedded systems, not general purpose work.

These days the marketing ppl has successfully use "More cores = better" slogan, just like the oldern days where higher MHz = better performance.

Nah, it doesnt work this way at all. We must evaluate and estimate performance based on the architecture itself, not based on core/threads/clockspeed alone.

it will be no use as (old saying again) Windows Vista isn't optimized or even designed for core numbers greater than 4.
