Hi all, I just got started into woodworking and I'm just wondering if there are any sawmills around Kulai or near JB that offers S4S furniture grade timber (also, kiln-dried), on second thought, sawmills from other places are ok too, I'll try to contact them and ask if they do postage. I've went to quite a lot of timber tradings around my place but most of them just offer rough sawn construction grade lumber and I don't have a planer nor a jointer to make stuff with these stocks. Any help is appreciated.

Hmm, as long as the wood quality good I don't really mind the price (as long as not too expensive la).

Ya, I agree, the timber trading uncle from my place also claim his balau S4S and dry. But when I eye down got warp and thickness not same also... (Is that common?)

not a big market for DIY projects thats why those timber traders cater for construction. what is your purpose for the timber if you don't have a planer or jointer? seriously postage if going to kill you to send those pieces. the cheap postage i can think off is those lorry that carry all stocks for part delivery. even that cost at least 100 per trip. i assume you meant high end furniture grade timber as majority of producers is using lower grades. my experience is to look for old timber trading co that are at least 30-40 years old. They will have the connection or experience to advice if the old timers are still there.

@CRaider2 Well, I didn't want to spend another 2k on this hobby as I'm just getting started and I'm not even sure that I will be able to really make something but yeah, it seems that there's no way around a planer/jointer in Msia. Guess I will just have to try my luck!

I went to a door shop and bought merbau planks from them to make a solid wood cabinet years ago. Don't know if this would be viable for you

By planks, do you mean those planks that they use for flooring?

So sorry that I have lost the real photos, otherwise you would easily understand. Anyway, I have drawn a sample to show what I did.

user posted image Corner cabinet something like this

user posted image Can become flat pieces like this.

These planks are what I told the door shop I wanted, and then I worked the planks to the shape I needed for the cabinet. The door shop is used to making solid doors, so I figured they would be able to get me S4S pieces, and nice ones too. In my case it worked.

I use SketchUp to design everything first, because damn, wood is expensive!

just buy some 15 /18mm plywood and edge band it or wood strip glue and nail gun.

you didnt put down the dimension is very hard to judge.

but it seems that you need to buy a couple of 1x4 or 1x6 to glue them up and cut.

What I would suggest is that if you don't mind finger joint you can buy rubberwood panels AB or BC grade or pine wood panel 4x8 about 200 or below.

s4s is just that, surfaced all 4 sides.

when you cut cross section, its in proper rectangular shape.

but doesnt mean its straight or not twisted.

s4s balau, dont trust it. vomit blood from previous purchase. had to change the timber twice. cos twisted from end to end.

s4s nyatoh still ok, usually those are sold in molding shops (selling architrave). very straight even for 8-10ft lengths. costs $$$...
