Shell in talks to sell Malaysia petrol stations to Saudi
Aramco

SINGAPORE – Energy giant Shell is in talks with Saudi Arabia’s state-owned Saudi Aramco to sell its petrol station business in Malaysia, the second-largest such network in the country, four industry sources aware of the discussions said, and a deal could be worth up to US$1 billion (S$1.35 billion).

Shell declined to comment on the talks but said Malaysia is an important country to the company. Saudi Aramco also declined to comment.

London-based Shell wholly owns around 950 petrol stations across the South-east Asian country, according to its website, with only Malaysia’s state-owned Petronas operating a bigger network.

Talks began in late 2023 and a deal may be finalised in the coming months, one source said. Two sources briefed on the matter put a potential deal size at roughly RM4 billion (S$1.14 billion) to RM5 billion.

In addition to its fuel stations, Shell sells industrial lubricants, produces crude oil and natural gas offshore of Sarawak and Sabah states, and is a joint venture partner in two liquefied natural gas ventures.

The sale is part of chief executive Wael Sawan’s efforts to focus the company’s operations on the most profitable businesses.

Shell has said it would look to divest 500 petrol stations in 2024 and 2025. It is in the process of selling its Singapore refinery and petrochemical complex.

.

.
Shell’s effort to sell its Malaysia fuel stations is consistent with its move to sell its refinery on Bukom Island in Singapore, which supplies the network, one of the sources said.

Saudi Aramco does not have petrol stations in Malaysia, although it owns 50 per cent of the 300,000-barrel per day Pengerang refinery in Johor in a joint venture with Petronas, which sells fuel domestically and for export.

Aramco operates petrol stations in Saudi Arabia and also operates fuel stations elsewhere in joint ventures with French major TotalEnergies and South Korea’s S-Oil Corp. REUTERS

Subsidi minyak RON95 dihapuskan mulai 1 Disember

So fast.

The targeted RON95 petrol subsidy, officially known as BUDI MADANI RON95, will be available to all Malaysians aged 16 and above with a valid driving licence. Each eligible individual will be capped at 300 litres of petrol per month.

The preparations for the subsidy rollout are progressing smoothly, with all oil companies confirming their readiness, including the installation of necessary machinery at petrol stations.

“Machines for in-store use have been provided, and most oil companies have activated systems at payment terminals, usable either inside or outside the stations,” Amir Hamzah said.

He acknowledged that while the preparations are in place, minor challenges could arise with new initiatives.

“Nothing is perfect, and we hope the public will be patient. What matters is that the government will honour its promise,” he added.

To further ensure the subsidy is used correctly, the government will introduce safeguards to prevent multiple refuelling attempts in one day.

“The mechanism will not allow multiple fills in one day. Full details of these controls will be announced later,” the minister explained.

Both the Finance Ministry and the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry are collaborating with oil companies to implement monitoring tools that can detect suspicious patterns in petrol purchases. This will help prevent misuse and protect government resources.

Finally it is come.......

Singapore cars die

Amir Hamzah added that using MyKad is the most effective way to implement the subsidy system, which also allows the ministry to distinguish between citizens and non-citizens.

“With this approach, we can address the issue of ineligible individuals. Without an identity card, there will be no access to the RON95 subsidy adjustment.

“Under existing conditions, foreigners driving vehicles from outside Malaysia, such as from Singapore or Thailand, are not eligible for subsidies because their cars are not registered in Malaysia.

“This remains in force at petrol stations. If you come to the station, you cannot buy RON95 unless the vehicle is registered in Malaysia, even if you are holding a Malaysian identity card.”

Amir Hamzah said the use of MyKad also reinforced national identity and pride.

“MyKad is the key to accessing benefits like the RON95 subsidy. If they do not have it, they are not eligible,” he said

In addressing security concerns, the minister gave his assurance that the government’s IT system followed strict security protocols under current regulations.

Just check IC..........
