Hi, I want to ask if harnesses & harness bar is street legal?

I have an old car that lacks quite some safety features. Since there's no airbag and it's illegal to install roll cage, I have to find an alternative way to increase my safety. So I thought of installing harnesses in my car just to be a little safer

If it's illegal, mind suggest any aftermarket car safety feature that is legal to install it on a street car

Adding more harness bar does not mean extra safety. You just make your car chassis more stiff and less flex. If chassis too stiff, direct impact of anything will direct transfer the force to you. That why you see why most race car with harness bar & roll cage need to wear helmet, bucket seat & 3~4 point safety belt. As helmet is the one that will help absorb the impact & protect your head, bucket seat & safety belt to hold you in case of any impact.

TS,
What 'old car' are you driving? And to what level of safety do you target to achieve with this vehicle?

Add stiffness is more of a roll cage job. Harness bar doesn't really add stiffness to your chassis. It's just a bar at the back of the seat to hold the harnesses. Plus I would rather have a strong and stiff frame than letting my car frame crush me to death

the next closest thing you can get is probably the ultra racing bars. install full set to increase ridgidity. not sure if you can retrofit other car's airbags into your car or not.

the engineering in old cars are quite abit different than the newer cars. not just the safety features like airbags... bur material strength, crumple zones etc has vastly improved over time. even the shape of the front end is a safety feature.

so in the end, no matter what you add, your old car is still gonna be an old car with older tech, old n possibly rusting, cracked, rotting materials etc.

so dont bother comparing with today's cars. different level already. just do the best you can and live with it.

but most importantly... drive safe!

running a roll cage is illegal according to JPJ laws.

Speaking from experience, i used to daily a car with roll cage, and pass through numerous blocks. Roll cage is the last thing that they will care about.

If your current seat belt is soo crappy and not tightened up if u jolt it then maybe a harness is a good thing. I dont know why u want to use a harness in a street car because once u adjust it to keep u firmly on the seat it is kind a hard to move around to grab tng card for example
