For those of you who had thoughts about venturing into extreme cooling aka Phase change cooling, here's a place to start off. And for those who are already into it....post your pics here and share your experience.

Post your enquries here. I can say its no easy task but once you get the hang of it, it's going to be fun and challenging.

Let me start off for ya.

This is my new Dual stage cascade.

I used 2 rotary compressors. Another option is using hermatic compressors

I am using r22 on 1st stage and r410a on the 2nd. Wish i could get my hands on r744a or r1150. With those temps could easily reach -80c to -90c

I build that rig inside my room so that i dun have to worry about moving it in later...haha tongue.gif

i am not running it 24/7...not that it cant but electricity is going to be a shocker. I have another 2 PCs for daily usage.

There are 2 types of phase change cooling. One is a normal phase change where it uses only one compressor. Temps is around -30c on load. The other type is cascade, the one i built. Temps hit -70c. Right now i am limited by the refrigarent as i cant seem to find better ones here other than r507. So i just settled for r410a for the 2nd stage.

The normal one is very portable...can be built according to the size of a casing eg Vapochill LS or Prometeia Mach2 GT.

yeah yeah as i can't seems to have a good enuf brain to understand wat i'd read on xs... so maybe if u can share some info of this cascade cooling here... i mean, preparations, problem u face, err cost... running cost... (3hp = 3hp aircond on full??).. ur cascade seems small too... maybe can make a nice arclyc box to cover it, then add some bling bling... coz no one make a nice cascade b4...

Let me first explain how a normal phase change works.

Parts involved:
1) Compressor - No explanation needed here
2) Condensor - This a actually a radiator where high-pressure refrigarent condenses into liquid
3) Filter/Dryer - This is to filter unwanted materials and dirt to keep the oil clean
4) Cappilary tube - This is to maintain high pressure liquid on one side while keep low pressure gas on the other side
5) CPU Evaporator - refrigarent from cap tube enters the evap and there will be a pressure drop, this drop allows the liquid to change to gas state.

Simple diagram of the loop :
Compressor --> Condensor (Cooling Coil) --> Filter/Dryer --> Cap tube --> CPU evap --> suction line --> back to compressor

A cascade is something similar but it works in 2 stages. The first stage is like a normal phase change but only its evaporates in a HX (Heat Exchanger). The 2nd stage is where refrigarent from the 2nd compressor is desuperheated into liquid state in the HX.

1st stage:
compressor no1 --> condensor --> filter/dryer --> cap tube --> HX --> back to compressor

2nd stage:
compressor no2 --> HX --> filter/dryer --> CPU evaporator --> suction line --> back to compressor

Start-up costs me almost RM5k. Some of the tools are one-time purchase only.

When i build another Phase Change, it's gonna be at low cost since i already have all the tools.

blink.gif rm5k for a cooler??? that's a lot... it's like buying a home 1hp air-cond for 1 compressor then a 2nd 2hp air-cond for 2nd stage... maybe can add 1 more 1hp air-cond for blowing urself with rm5k... smile.gif r u getting all those parts new??? i mean some of these compressor can get at those electrical service shop rite?? like those service air-cond or refrigerator... i bought 1 compressor 1hp n 1 water pump (very big that i can pump the water for my entire family, n oso too noisy) for rm200 2nd hand but never have a chance to use them... coz no idea how to use... hehehehe... rclxub.gif do u have any pics to show how u build them step by step??? not many of us will eventually build 1, but our eyes r itchy to c more though... rclxms.gif

No need to blow myself as my bench room is already airconditioned. Yup all the parts a new. 2nd hand air con is cheap but the condition of the compressor is unknown. Sometimes the compressor oil might get contaminated in due time and oil change need to be done. I bought a 2nd hand compressor before and it spoilt just after 3 days.

Its the tools that cost a lot....here is the rough estimation of building my cascade

1) Vacuump pump ( vacuums off moisture - very important ) - RM550
2) RothenBurg torch head - RM270
3) R410a refrigarent - RM580 per tank
4) R22 refrigarent - RM85 per tank
5) Copper pipes - RM400
6) Captubes - RM180
7) Pipe bender - RM50
8) Pipe cutter - RM50
9) Silver rod - RM10
10) Mapped gasses - RM20 per tank
11) Compressor 1HP - RM280
12) Compressor 2HP - RM480
13) Condensor - RM200
14) Filter/Dryer - RM50 (10 pcs)
15) Access Valve - RM50 (10 pcs)
16) Insulation materials - RM100
17) Manifold set - RM200
18) Flaring tools - RM100

There ia quite a good write up on building a Phase Change at VR-Zone forums
