22 minutes into the session Giancarlo Fisichella's Renault ran over a drain cover at turn ten dislodging it in the process. The red flags flew for nearly half an hour before the session could resume, making it a disjoined afternoon of running.

Kimi Raikkonen may have been faster than his team-mate Felipe Massa in Sunday's Turkish GP but it was the latter who claimed the win.

At a track where Ferrari were expected to be the quickest cars, they were with Raikkonen topped the timesheets with a 1:27.295.

However, what wasn't expected was how much faster than Finn was than his race-winner team-mate. Massa's best time, a 1:27.922, was 0.627s slower.

McLaren, though, can take some comfort from the fact that, although Ferrari clinched the 1-2, they were not too far off the pace. Lewis Hamilton's fastest lap was only 0.041s slower than Massa's, while Fernand Alonso was a further 0.107s slower.

Nick Heidfeld once again demonstrated the progress made by BMW this season, setting the fifth best time.

However, his team-mate Robert Kubica, surprisingly, didn't have the pace. His best time, a 1:28.918, was six-tenths of a second slower than Heidfeld's.

Nico Rosberg and Alex Wurz showed the recent progress made by Williams, finishing sixth and eighth on the timesheets, separated by the Renault of Heikki Kovalainen.

Meanwhile Honda's Jenson Button who finished down in 13th place and a lap behind race-winner Massa actually didn't do too bad in the pace department. The Brit was tenth fastest, only 0.951s slower than Massa.

Raikkonen Makes Too Many Mistakes
Kimi said he did it because he was "bored" and had nothing else to do. The alternative explanation for Raikkonen recording a pointless fastest lap on the very final lap of the Turkish GP was that the Finn wanted to make a point of the 'Felipe-may have-won-but-I-was-the-faster-driver' kind. Alas, Raikkonen's gesture was futile and simply underlined that the Turkish GP was a race he lost due to a mistake in qualifying.

In a two-way fight, superior pace - which Raikkonen can probably justifiably boast over all of his principals rivals - will generally prove decisive. But in a contest featuring four credible contenders, speed ceases to be the salient factor. The World Championship will surely be won by the driver who makes the least number of mistakes - and Raikkonen has already made too many this year.

If Kimi were to be in front, I would be sure Kimi would be leading the race. Fact it was two prancing horses, I doubt the team would have been happy if Kimi went any closer to Massa. And through the pitstops? IF Kimi put in more fuel, Hamilton could have gotten second unless they took Massa in first. Whatever it is, Hamilton's tyre blow was the happiest moment in F1 since........ the last race

Thank God for Lewis it wasn't like Richard Hammond's crash though.

Improved Heikki Is Writing Fisi's F1 Obituary
There was a pleasant symmetry in Heikki Kovalainen lauding Renault's development after his excellent sixth-placed finish in Turkey because Heikki is the most improved driver of the season.

After the horror of his nightmare debut in Australia, the Finn has scored in five of the last six races and trounced Giancarlo Fisichella this weekend. Only another unexpected reversal of fortunes inside the Renault garage can save Fisi from being replaced by Nelson Piquet Jr for 2008.

Fernando Alonso has urged McLaren to find the extra speed needed to keep Ferrari at bay in the Championships.

Ferrari claimed the 1-2 at Istanbul with Felipe Massa leading home his team-mate Kimi Raikkonen, while third place was the best Alonso could have hoped for.

However, the Spaniard didn't only finish behind the Ferraris on the track. He was also behind them in pace. While Raikkonen's fastest lap during the 58-lap grand prix was a 1:27.295, Alonso's best was 0.775s slower.

The McLaren driver, though, wasn't too fazed by the blistering pace shown by Raikkonen.

"Well, we more or less knew that, because we are coming from some races where we saw their potential: in Magny-Cours they were very very quick, in Silverstone they were very quick again," Alonso said.

"The only race where we were back on the pace was maybe Hungary and that was not a surprise because it's a very slow circuit and something like Monaco.

"We know that that type of circuit is quite good for us, but coming to a normal circuit like Turkey, they are on top again. We know that we need to improve but next race will be better."

With five races to go McLaren have an 11-point lead over Ferrari in the Constructors' Championship, while Lewis Hamilton is five points ahead of Alonso in the Drivers' standings.
