Its that time again. No time given though tongue.gif

and some one seriously need to inform the event manager the errors made on the so called two hidef formats. HD DVD = High Density DVD (NOT High Definition DVD). BD = Blu-ray (NOT Blu-Ray or Bluray) .. this is utterly embarassing !! mad.gif mad.gif

My main focus and objective this time round would be on good old vinyl stuff, perhaps some desired accessories for my TT rig which I hope to find there. (actually only a couple of things I need for subtle improvement). Other than that it'll be looking for good cd's at discounted prices and listening to non-affordable hifi rigs. As for AV stuff..I'll give it a pass, (no oogling at the girls too..I'm too old for that! and the hifi is JUST PRETTIER!..and doesn't talk back!) as done in the last 3 shows.. since I've totally given up on catching up with AV. To me, as long as our free or paid TV broadcast standards are lagging and have so much to be desired, owning a whizz bang HD screen is not worth the consideration..for now...strictly my personal view.

Ah!..As long as my own circle of friends don't look upon me as infantile.. biggrin.gif

Anyway..I'm already geared up and very enthusiastic on going to the show. I'll be there on 1st day AND the 3rd day. (usual routine as in the past). I know I'll bump into many friendly local hifi kakis. I know the S'porean kakis are making a trip here too..Yeah!..those flers ain't going to miss this, EXCEPT they most probably ain't buying anything, afterall, they get it cheaper at home.

I think I'll spend the 3rd day doing some serious auditioning..this time on good Head cans too.
I wonder if there's going to be any celebs there.. I mean Hifi celebs!..like Mr Marantz Ken Ishiwata!.. I had a photo taken with him last year.

Good looks is one matter that'll not neccessarily sway a seasoned hifi buff.. Sound good or not?..THAT's the question!..regardless if its assembled on the kitchen worktop or haphazardly wired internally.
My own amplifiers.. My younger sis did once ask.."WHAT IS THAT! ???? icon_idea.gif

Nevertheless..for TV, LCD...Looks good is a MUST!.. thumbup.gif

As it's my first show in KL - are there any good deals to be found at the show or is it more of a technology showcase?

Thanks!

You're gonna pay RM10 entrance fee and feel free to browse every exhibitor's room and stall there till 7pm more or less. Just like PC fair and some dealers operate a warehouse sales inside the hotel room.. sure got attractive deals that may suit your budget. It may be crowded...not forgetting thousands of visitors plying up & down in a hotel corridor... like visiting ayam!... shakehead.gif icon_rolleyes.gif

To ALL VISITORS.. BEWARE OF PICKPOCKETS!.. its been a warning since last 2 shows..

i think u can prepare to spent on some cheaper price original DVD, CD & vinyl as well. But Vinyl will be old albums. Dun expect u can get latest vinyl album. From my past experience lah. hee...

I will give this year a pass. Have been 3 times of this Marriot AV show. I found myself better earn more else it is truly a heavenly poison place.

The AV showroom is always the place i stay longer than any little speaker room der.
Hmm. wonder what movies they gonna playing this time. Last time is LOTR 2.

Its of course I won't be looking to buy vinyls..choice is few and which won't be cheap. I have my doubts on new re-issue vinyls which have been said to be direct digital transfers..so its not entirely worth buying. Better of with the cd version altogether. Besides, many old records, should the condition be prestine, the analog sound is better many times over compared to today's pressings. I've many records of the same album that'll beat the cd issue on a direct A-B comparison on my rig. Its just more realistic..from my own ears. OK..won't expand on that as it'll get more subjective.

The last time I enjoyed a DVD presentation was at one of the rooms having a full McIntosh system and they played Seiji Ozawa New Year 2002 which I sat there half hour enjoying the sight & sounds. In my thoughts,..no Japanese system during that show could make it as enjoyable as the McIntosh system. I enjoy concert videos very much, not so much the bang boom boom action movies..will only annoy my peace loving neighbors.

Not really lah!. Show is a show.. for everyone and anyone wanting to audition megabuck systems for free.
Last year there's one vendor having a stack of Logitech Z series speakers for sale..(supposed to be offer price) but forumer Mike Chai said price not very competitive. Anyway I think the vendor offer those stuff for the sake of variety.
From observation, some hifi stuff are somewhat priced higher and higher year after year. Don't know why. rclxub.gif rclxub.gif

Who's salary?..the sales people at the hifi shop?.. My take is that a reputable hifi shop should have very knowledgeble and courteous individuals to handle any Q & A from all sorts of customers..regardless beginners or experienced customers. Hifi is a niche market..unlike selling sub RM300 play everything & anything DVD players which hardly need any sales talk...simple as buying a Pendrive.
C'mon!..look at the kind of staff employed at PC shops nowadays.. flers who know next to nothing and top it all with bad attitude selling PC hardware like kacang putih. (Pasar Rd electronic shops infested with uncaring attitude riddled staff and inherent sense of pride affectionately known as LCLY!). Gone are the days where computer staff are well dressed in a suit and many were degree holders, armed with particular product knowledge to serve customers. I'd stop patronizing any hifi shop the day I notice they employ morons to serve me. Pay peanuts and you get monkeys!.

Annouce, maybe...but availability?

Anyway, i'll be there helping the Mediaplex guys out with their showfloor. Will be helping on the gaming side with PS3, XB360 and Wii. Particularly the PS3 and the newly cooked demo of Heavenly Sword for PS3, the 15 minute gameplay video of MGS4, as well as a couple o Blu-ray (did i say it right, g5sim? tongue.gif) and HD-DVD titles. Mediaplex will have the HD-A1 to play the HD-DVDs and BDP-S1E and a couple of PS3s for the Blu-ray duties.

If you want to experience bad customer service you should check out the Mac centre in MidV. Those guys there like don't need your business type of attitude. Don't know how they survive man. In contrast, the Mac centre in 1U is way better in terms of service levels. IMO the MidV outlet should sack the whole bunch of morons. Not even one of them was friendly or approachable.

yes you are sir. Blu-ray or BD NOT Bluray, BluRay, Blu Ray, Blu-Ray, Blur-ay, or Blew Ray. laugh.gif laugh.gif

Good luck at Mediaplex. I was at Mediaplex during last year's show where they had lotsa HD DVD display. THey they realise that that the A1 player is too expensive and promoted the multitasking PS3 instead. I bet they are using the same unit to display HD DVD tongue.gif

probably meet u there on Sunday morning tongue.gif friday - they start at 11.30am - omg might as well as start a 6pm tongue.gif

For PC fair, Distributors offer quantity discount and better than normal times for dealers to have quick sales and be competitive. Same goes for most peripherals from monitor to other pc parts.

Ok!..off to the show now..breakfast/brunch outside first!.

Enjoy the show guys!.. thumbup.gif

Check out Anthem Statement D2 AV Processor somewhere around the Mediaplex area, too bad just for show, if not you'll get to see it's video processing(which I got to see 2 days ago, muahaha). Still haven't heard the audio side, from what I've heard, only secong to Theta Digital's Casablanca III with Six Shooter. Neaatt..

I usually take pics on 1st day..but didn't. Ended up bumping into all the hifi kaki and its like a old boys school reunion with everyone busy yakking away and catching up since the last show.
Guess what?...only a handful of lang lui promoters there and its like no one was interested in salivating at them.. brows.gif
CD prices?.. I think that shop purposely jack up the normal prices and then give 20% discount!.. They cannot bluff me lah!..yet there's people still buying.. I didn't buy any..NOT even 1. There's one exhibitor selling all sorts of China import audiophile cd's..China version XRCD's, Telarc ROund Up, even Burmester CD-03?.. WTF?.. I know Burmester never allowed their demo cd to be printed outside Germany..Oh well..nicely packaged..it can fool anyone!. RM25/pc!
I'll be there again Sunday..this time to seriously audition the rooms with nice rigs.

Met up with Scotty the mod!.. very nice and accomodating chap!. thumbup.gif

As usual lots of nice rigs, but nothing major or exciting even the choice HD DVD and Blu-ray players were limited. Though there were a few good bargains, there was nothing spectacular. However, I was disappointed that an event with a tagline "TAKING YOU INTO A NEW ERA OF HIGH DEFINITION DVD AND BLURAY DISC" to have totally not a single HD DVD or Blu-ray disc/software on sale, only the usual limited choice CDs, DVDs and vinyls.

China imported "audiophile" cd's (one can easily spot them with a very poor quality hologram stuck on the shrink wrap) has always been cleverly and nicely packaged to look like its an original. Prices are way lower than legitimate ones. Most experienced hifi kaki I know would perhaps buy one for the sake of trying out or listening to them in the car or toilet...but most of the time distance themselves from them like the plague!. IMHO, regardless of price, I view these China cd's no better than those P ones from Petaling street..only a difference in packaging.

On another note..I think today's event at opening time was somewhat quiet. No door gift, Not very lively, Less exhibitors selling their own audiophile cd's, should I say hardly any groups of lang lui, and No celebs like Ken Ishiwata this year.. A bit too eerie! sigh!.

High end turntable upgrade parts on display..the Flat Earth Linn Sondek LP12.
Upgrade Ekos tonearm : RM23k
Upgrade Suspension and armboard : RM11.2k BUT..the quality of the machining was JAWDROPPINGLY SUPERB!. (but my sifu quietly told me its possible to have it fabricated in Segambut.. IF there's a legitimate CAD drawing!) drool.gif drool.gif biggrin.gif BTW..it comes with 2pcs allen key screwdrivers too!.. Quality ones!..not hardware shop ones ah!.
OMG!.. this Linn Sondek will break your bank account in 5 seconds and NO bank will offer you a loan to finance this..not even Tai Yee Long!.

Valve & Vinyl shop from Plaza Ampang: Loads & loads of nice desirable audiophile (above RM100) and used vinyl records. (somewhere RM50 and above).. but exhibitors are too rigid on prices and you're lucky if you can scrape RM10 discount from those 3 figure priced records.. Too stiff!.. sorry..NEXT YEAR perhaps! sweat.gif

Though I fully agree that we are not ready, its just that, with a tag line of bringing an era HD DVD and Blu-ray disc as stipulated on their website, I feel its just not going the full mile, even with the limited HD players and displays there and it might give people a wrong impression. Well maybe, it could be just me, as I thought i could get some reasonably priced Blu-ray and HD DVDs there. So its' back to online ordering for me.

Also I too feel the lack of any door gift, enough "nice and lively" promoters, drop in major exhibitors and audiophile vendors makes this year's event rather "quiet". I have been to nearly all the previous events, since the very 1st one at the Legend Hotel and this is by far the "quietest". Lucky there is still the obligatory contest with prizes left.

However I still do hope for a good turn out and for another the next year icon_rolleyes.gif!

I felt it was half-way HD world since I don think there is any Dolby Tru-HD / DTS-HD capable AV receiver on demo, right? Only visual but not audio. The most is by 6 channel analogue input at the moment in our soil.

Hmmm... more channel INPUT can come FOC.. but more OUTPUTS means more speakers and THAT costs some more money!...lots of money especially for quality speakers...speaking of decent Home AV setup!. Oh well!..my 2 sen! doh.gif

Ae ego m is selling at rm 688 downstairs. upstairs is still not cheap enough,,,

just came back, sonus faber was pretty impressive.

also on the ls3/5a was super good, though it is an old system, same system i heard last 2 years.

new comers are adam. powered near field pro speakers.

loads of promo on bluray but seldom see hd dvd. looks like it is loosing out.

macintosh was really good, and so as martin logan, with kungfu hustle as test cd.

infocus has good bargain on the projectors.

marten design was great and also chario had a very large speaker which i have not seen b4.

best buy speaker at the moment is aego m and great buy on transparent cable is from TL giving 50 off.

naim, was superb with fantastic sound. most impressive setup was harberth. very great detail. but still not in par with KI LS3/5A.

audio note had horn speakers that will blow you away, so stand a bit further.

loads of karaoke going on.

mbl had great systems paired with focus audio master series speakers.
a lot of great stuff as usual in cmy.

well i think thats it, worth going, but not as good compared to last year. which the swedish statement was arround..

Swedish statement is there only not as big as last time.

But kinda bored with the cd booth. Always by the same people. Almost same stock and same pricing. But I spotted a cd that i always want to buy. But do not know why after seeing the rm80 price tag and even after discounted, I totally lost interest. I'm not sure they jacked up the price coz i visited their shop quite often, never get impression they are selling cheap on audiophile cd.

Only snapped the free av express magazine by leslie.

I saw a pair of Aego M selling for RM699 at the lower floor, right before the exit. It is the about same place where there is a huge amount of CDs for sale.

What really stand out for me was ProAc's system... and Epos...

They should have. I only have 10 minutes to walked around to see all the "leng Luis" that many people said but none of them caught my eyes and so on the systems as well.
You may ring up to Philips Malaysia and get a customer service that able on phone with you for about 30 minutes Q&A session until you feel syiok or tired. notworthy.gif

In this three days, myself only bought 2 China album from my Singapore partner smile.gif

I find this Ultra low-frequency pulse generator RR-77 gadget really interesting. Sound stage, depth, clarity, vocal greatly improved the moment this gadget is turned on. Anyone one of you checked that out?? cost a bomb though for light weighted empty feeling plastic box with the size of like 5 inches x 5 inches x 2 inches tongue.gif

I heard that the vendor selling China cd's got shut down..raided by the authorities on Sunday...so much for China "audiophile" cd's!.
For the record, I ended up NOT buying even one cd..except for the FOC mystery gift cd at the ticketing counter.
Got myself a pack of offer "Grundig" brand CDR's for RM10 and a spanking new toy in the form of Pro-ject Cartridge alignment tool from Tong Lee who's now the dealer for Pro-ject turntables. The Project RPM10 on demo was georgeous!..new graphite arm..reminds me of the same material used in badminton rackets.
OK..off to enjoy my morning tea!..Its raining now..!

It was good to see the Naims! Almost wrote a check for them tongue.gif although they were properly set up. Loved the Electrocompaniets. Nice to see/hear the Harbeths in action. But didn't see any Mark Levinson or did I miss them? And what happened to other British products? or the other Europeans? or the classics?

I don't dig HT stuff so no comment on them. By the end, I bought Grundig CD-Rs (haven't figured out what to do with them) and some audiophile CDs. Quite expensive though!! And Oh, there was this 'talk' by this speaker guy by the name of Alex Monrue or something.

BTW, what's Lenglui? Another hi-end China Product?

Hi Grandspy

Do you, or anyone here have a Naim preamp?

I have shifted over to Quad amplification now as i recently swapped my old Naim pre and power for a Quad setup.

I have, however, just finished building a group buy / project some of us Naim fans did a while back... trying to build a motherboard that attempts to clone the topology of Naims top of the line RM 80 000 NAC 552 reference preamp. Amongst all of the build's i think mine is the most professional looking... i gutted out my old NAC 42.5 and built this...

user posted image

I'm showing this to you guys because i would love to compare it to a current Naim preamp... but i dont know anyone with one.

Any one here that wants to try it in a recent Naim system? Invite us over thumbup.gif

Cheers

mark

Thats interesting.

Wonder if the good performance was due to the other components .... those power boosters/filters on both sides, etc.. Will check out their showroom one of these days for more analysis.

5. Tom Evans phono stages at Valve & Vinyl shop (selling LP's at 4th floor) If not mistaken, also very expensive. The cheap plastics doesn't justify its price, its the SOUND that matters.

Sorry, some of my pictures didn't turn out well due to bad lighting in the room.
