hi hi need some recommendation and info

for trip around 10 days (osaka & Tokyo + somewhere in between) for 2 user
what is the cheapest/recommended way for internet?
> buy sim locally when arrived (but this seen very expensive and google price is all over the place from rm50-rm300)
> buy sim from shopee (anyway bought this? can share experience?)
> rent wifi device (i think this is the most expensive way iinm)

as for Bullet train (aka Shinkansen rite?)
from google i need for buy/book it 3 days in advance, is this correct, can anyone confirm?
can this buy online or need to buy in person at station?

for travel which one is better if anything did it before,
Land at Osaka to Tokyo or Land at Tokyo to Osaka

the sim card just plug and play when you arrived at Japan?

QUOTE(michaelchang @ Jan 3 2023, 05:55 PM)
you can buy shinkansen ticket 10 mins before departure but if you are traveling during holidays and peak hour. Best to book in advance. December holiday, all reserved seats during the day are sold out 2 days before. only left with evening departure. You still can buy tickets but risk standing all the way.
*
do you know how much is the ticket price now? (from google is around 15k yen website dated back in 2018)

hi anyone got recommendation for internet solution?
10 days traveling between Osaka, Kyoto and Tokyo.
for 2 pax mainly use for navigation like google maps or check train route or occasionally social media.
is 2GB data daily enough?

from google found mainly 3 ways,
1) Shopee Japan sim > Cheapest among all. Any good? Anyone bought/use this before, can recommend which seller?
2) Local Japan sim > Way more expansive than Shopee sim around 30-40% extra from the price that i can google.
3) Pocket Wifi > too expensive imo

hope anyone can share some insight notworthy.gif

Was in East hokkaido the rural parts and we tap on to nttt docomo as part of maxis and digi
Speeds was fine and good

With digi or maxis don't have to change sim and digi had like free calls of 10mins
*
im using digi, so for this roaming you purchased in mydigi apps when you landed at Japan?

QUOTE(tzxsean @ Jun 3 2023, 07:50 PM)
Yet to use ubigi but I plan to use it
It’s cheaper than our telco for 10GB data (lasts 30 days), costs about 18 USD (~RM84)

but there's a 10% discount

however Ubigi is just internet plan, there is no phone call included
*
ya coz around rm80 others can get 20gb but for 15 days
and i need it for 2 pax hence is kinda expensive compare to others and scare not enough data lol

QUOTE(sben525 @ Jun 3 2023, 08:17 PM)
yes, stable and fast, can't view the balance of data

Most of high end , Michelin star , F&B food chain accept CC. Most of famous restraurant you can find online, vlog , blog are normally accept CC.

ohh so most places in Japan still cant scan buyer QR code?

Going to Osaka & Tokyo early November, need some advise/answer

Hows the weather (in person) ? from google is autumn between 8c - 20c
Like Genting/Cameron? normal sweater/jacket will do?

Pocket money mainly for food/daily transport etc, RM200/6500 yen +-
Enough for 1 day? (first time visit Japan) not sure on the price

Regarding shinkansen, from Osaka/Kyoto to Tokyo.
I plan to go Nara Park in the morning, maybe afternoon will travel to Tokyo via Shinkansen.
Need advise the following?
1) From Google, I need to buy ticket at Shin-Osaka Station? price is around 15k+- yen (not sure if price increased). Using Tokaido Shinkansen line
I need to buy a few day in advance? or is there cheaper option like buying online before traveling?

2) Should I take the Shinkansen from Kyoto Station? Direct after visit Nara Park
If yes, can i buy the ticket at any Station? or how?

For Tokyo, check this out:
72 hour subway pass, only 1500 yen, one day 500 yen can sit unlimited subway under Tokyo Metro and Toei Subway lines. Comes with some discounts for museums and some tourist stuff too.

https://www.tokyometro.jp/en/ticket/travel/index.html

Food I have recommendations for some sushi shops. Go during lunch time, they have promo sets around 1000+ yen only. Same restaurants if eat during dinner is 5/6000 yen. The independent ones I really like, feel super authentic and really worth it.

https://tokyocheapo.com/food-and-drink/sush...hi-restaurants/

Breakfast I will go Yoshinoya/Sukiya gyudon shops, their food cheaper than 7-11 FamilyMart. Wherever area you stay you must go find the local ramen shop though, those local ones are the best.
*
Japan got many "tourist pass" haaha very confusing to me
Can i know how to determine which is tokyo Metro and Toei Subway lines? and where to buy this pass?

Yeah super confusing, just use Google maps wherever you need to go.

Basically is all the subway lines is Metro or Toei, not the trains (like our KTM). This pass can buy at any subway station.

i see, how about Osaka? got any pass recommend?

Highly depend on how you go to Osaka from Tokyo, and what you do and spend how many days in Osaka Kyoto Nara. If you take flight is much cheaper. If you want to take shinkansen then buy JR pass lo, around RM1k 7 days or 14 days 1.5k. If want then buy before Oct 1, huge price increase.

If stay in Osaka only, then Osaka metro pass around 700 yen a day

https://metronine.osaka/en/ticket/ticket-b02/

If go here and there can check out Kansai Thru Pass

https://www.surutto.com/tickets/kansai_thru_english.html

5400 yen for 3 days, dont need to use consecutively.

For Kyoto can see here
https://www.discoverkyoto.com/visitors-guid...ay-pass-ticket/

Kobe-Osaka-Kyoto if really want super budget travelling, theres a rail pass for 1200yen for two days, for Hankyu rail.
*
Thanks will look into all the pass
But for JR i dont think is worth it? coz i will only take 1 time shinkansen from Osaka to Tokyo?

QUOTE(kenji1903 @ Sep 19 2023, 08:03 PM)
I have written some notes on budgeting in my blog, not sure if it will help
https://wlst-ourfirstjourney.blogspot.com/2...anning.html?m=1

It will make sense to get a JR pass if you are travelling a lot. I travelled from Tokyo-Nagano-Toyama-Takayama-Osaka-Kyoto-Himeji and back to Tokyo

During my stay in Osaka we took day trips to Nara and Kyoto and finally Hemeji
You might want to spend at least half a day in Nara, it’s a very nice place to walk around. Train from Shin Osaka to Tokyo is about 3.5 hours on a normal Shinkansen (Hikari/Sakura). You might reach Tokyo quite late if you’re on Nara in the first half of the day. There are ticket machines and manned counters at the JR stations
*
For JR pass worth it, and with the price increase? Coz my plan only Osaka > Kyoto > Nara > Tokyo.
I think will only take 1 Shinkansen from Osaka to Tokyo. And till now i still dont know how to tell which is JR train or other train loool
1 way ticket is for Osaka to Tokyo is RM500? but JF pass is RM 1000?

Ya plan to go Nara like early in the morning from Osaka maybe around 7/8am and spend half the day
Plan to walk around the park to see Deer and maybe go Higashimuki Shopping St and the famous mochi shop
And plan to go back Osaka maybe after lunch 1/2pm and take Shinkansen around 3pm to Tokyo and reach maybe around 6pm?
Do you think this is doable/viable? any advice is appreciated

Nara are nearer to Osaka City, more further away from Kyoto.  Kintetsu are the quickest way travel between Nara & Osaka.
Shinkansen Ticket no need advance booking unless you travel on Golden Week.  Just buy on spot.  Osaka to Tokyo one day got 100+ train. Every 20 minute one train depart from Shin-Osaka to Tokyo
*
Sorry, Kintetsu is the train name? laugh.gif coz from google all i get was to use Tokaido Shinkansen line (that have 3 train Nozomi, Hikari, Kodama)
still blur with the Shinkansen/train in general.

"Just buy on spot" as in i can go to counter/machine to buy the next incoming Shinkansen ? like our MRT/LRT here?
do you know the price now? for 1 way ticket from Osaka > Tokyo?

Btw can you share hows the weather are like during Early Nov?
Coz forecast is 8c - 20c mainly sunny, is like Genting/Cameron?
sweater jacket will do?

Kintetsu are the largest private operator train company in between Osaka - Nagoya.
From Nara to Osaka City, Kintetsu are the fastest because Kintetsu offer "Limited Express" train.

Yes, You can go Counter / Machine buy next train ticket. Every 15 Minute One Shinkansen depart from Shin-Osaka Station towards Tokyo Station.

No matter what Train (Nozomi , Hikari , Kodama) you on.
Green Class - 19,390 Yen (Train Ticket: 8,910 Yen & Green Class Seat: 10,480 Yen)
Reserved Seat (Normal Class) - 14,520 Yen (Train Ticket: 8,910 Yen & Reserved Seat: 5,610 Yen)
Unreserved Seat (Normal Class) - 13,870 Yen (Train Ticket: 8,910 Yen & Unreserved Seat: 4,960 Yen)

Unreserved Seat means you leave your seat for toilet , anyone can take over your seat just like KTM Commuter / MRT / LRT.  Reserved Seat means you got seat number

Shinkansen normally layout will be

[Green Class Coach] - [Reserved Seat Coach] - [Reserved Seat Coach] - [Reserved Seat Coach] - [Reserved Seat Coach] - [Unreserved Seat Coach] - [Unreserved Seat Coach] - [Green Class Coach]
*
ok just to understand better;
Kintetsu own Nozomi , Hikari , Kodama (like our ETS / Intercity own by KTM?)
Tokaido Shinkansen is the line name?

Regarding the seat/ticket
for Green Class/Reserved Seat meaning i need choose a specific time train rite? and can only board that particular train?
for Unreserved Seat, just like normal train i can board which ever that arrived at the platform or if too full i can wait for the next train?

QUOTE(kenji1903 @ Sep 20 2023, 09:39 PM)
Depends actually, you need to find out the tedious way
Use google map and individually add all the train fares then compare and see if it’s worth getting the JR pass… if not mistaken, all trains will increase price, not only JR pass, maybe @RegentCid kor can help confirm this smile.gif

Your Nara day trip plan sounds good 👍🏻

First time Japan travellers like myself also confused, cos the stations got segregate JR Shinkansen, JR metro and other non JR lines, just need to look for the correct platform. But the station masters are very helpful so don’t worry.
With JR pass you need to look for Hikari/Sakura, the Kodoma stops every station hence longer train ride, JR pass don’t cover Nozomi (few stops less compared to Hikari/Sakura). But if you are buying individual tickets, you can take Nozomi thumbup.gif
*
user posted image

ahh what i mean by cant tell which is included in JR pass is im using google maps
how to tell if the train im using is included in the pass?

QUOTE(tohff7 @ Sep 20 2023, 10:34 PM)
Not worth using JR pass. Even before the price increase, if you travelling one-way shinkansen from Osaka to Tokyo (for departure flight), you don't need JR pass

JR (is just like our KTM) and they build major railways connecting cities across the whole country. Beyond that, they also build a few rails in big cities (Osaka Loop Line, Tokyo Yamonate Line, Kansai/Narita airport express, etc.)

Then you have several private railways operators (Keisei, Odakyu, etc.) that specialise in certain routes

and lastly, each major cities have their own subway line (our LRT/MRT)

i see thanks for the info

Kintetsu is Kintetsu, JR is JR.  Shinkansen belong to JR.  Kintetsu is private operator operates in Osaka + Nagoya + Kyoto.
From Nara to Osaka / Kyoto vice versa only 2 Operator, one is JR , one is Kintetsu.  JR only offer local train which is similar to our KTM Commuter, it stop every station.  Sometimes got Rapid service which skip some station.  Kintetsu offer "Limited Express" which is more expensive but more comfortable & more faster.  Kintetsu Limited Express is similar to our ETS.  From Osaka to Nara by JR need 1 hour, Kintetsu Limited Express only need 35 minute.

If you Google Map Nara, you will see 2 Train Station. One is JR Nara Station, another is Kintetsu Nara Station.  biggrin.gif

Green / Reserved / Unreserved also need choose a specific time train.  Because 8,910 Yen is Train Ticket. So you got the Train Number & Time.  If you buy Unreserved Seat, if the Train comes & Full, you stand all the way to Tokyo but this is very rare, it only happen on Japan Golden Week.

Example you reach Shin-Osaka Station at 16:00

16:06 Nozomi 34

16:15 Nozomi 236

16:21 Nozomi 422

Ticket machine will show 6 train which is depart soon. you just choose which depart time suit you most.  If machine too complicated, you just go JR Ticket Office buy Shinkansen Ticket, staff will arrange best depart train for you.

Japan Train are very very accrurate!!!  16:15 train, the train will arrived platfrom at 16:10 and it will depart exactly 16:15.  If you arived Shin-Osaka Station at 16:00, I suggest you buy 16:21 or 16:40 or 17:00
*
QUOTE(Okina @ Sep 21 2023, 09:25 AM)
Kintetsu is one of the railway operators in Japan (others are JR, Keihan, Metro, etc).

JR owns the shinkansens and Nozomi, Hikari and Kodama refers to the train service speed. The less stops it makes, the faster you reach your destination.

Green class.reserved seats are time restricted because you have booked that specific seat for that specific time. You can reschedule if you think you cannot make it in that time slot.

Unreserved seat is first come first served basis, so can take any time you want. If you missed your reserved seat time slot, you can always take unreserved at any time of your convenience, as long as it is on the same day.

Use Google Maps on PC. You'll  be able to see which line is operated by which company when you expand the stops info. If it says West Japan Railway Company or has a JR logo at the side of the line, that's JR operated and will be covered by JR Pass. In Osaka, the most convenient line is the Osaka Metro sinve I was mostly traveling up and down the Midosuji line. Osaka Amazing Pass gives unlimited rides on the Osaka Metro.

Best to get familiarized with some key routes before you go to Japan. Know which station should you take and which company the line is operated by. Navitime is a good tool to plan which station you need to take and can filter based on the tourist pass that you have. Download their rail map and study the lines as well.

just wondering where is this "Maybank xchange"? can exchange at any maybank etc?

last weekend MV rate is 1000 - 32.25
but in general MV got the most money changer located at 1 place but most of the time all will have same rate anyway.

well tbh, i does not really matter much if you change only like rm5k-10k only 0.1 - 0.3 diff
the parking and petrol plus time you spend driving and queue etc.
