QUOTE(elwwmatrix @ Jun 2 2008, 04:53 PM) Just curious. Does Inspiron has the same Mylar sealed Keyboard and FULL magnesium frame and chassis as the VOSTRO line? cos i can see there's a small gap on the right side of the keyboard, and i could even see leaked blue led light from the status indicator in the body. I am now using a keyboard protector just in case something happen to my beloved lappy. yes. they are essentially the same thing, with different names. the "sealed" keyboard here means that the keyboard is actually a "cup" that holds water. when you spill water on the keyboard, you wont risk water penetrating through the keyboard, but i totally understand your concern, because i notice the sides are not sealed. i guess the probability of water spilling on the edges of the keyboard is much slimmer. |

QUOTE(~DaViD~ @ Jun 6 2008, 03:33 PM) Guys pls comment about my specs. looks like a good system, relatively value priced too. ok, regarding the memory, all the comments posted by other forumers here are all true. dual channel operation does require two identical sized SO-DIMMs. but if IMHO, i would stick to 1x2GB+1x1GB=3GB RAM. reason? simple, vista is memory hungry as it already is. 3GB is hitting the sweet spot of 32bit vista OS, which can only address up to ~3.5GB memory. my arguement is future expandibility. if you were to upgrade to 64bit OS in the future, 4GB is definately recommended. so, instead of throwing away both your RAM modules, you can just take the 1GB out and replace it with 2GB, giving u a total of 4GB RAM. the basis of this arguement is that your system has a quite powerful processor and gpu, which may last u for a good 2-3years max. who knows you/everyone might venture into 64bit computing in the near distant future? also, RAM requirement is getting ever higher these days, so the size may actually outweight the little speed gain you get from running dual channel.-Intel c2d T7250 -vista home basic (I will manually change to ultimate) 15.4 Widescreen WXGA+ (1280x800) display with TrueLife -3GB DDR2 Ram -160GB SATA HD (free upgrade from promotion) -Nvidia 8600M GT 256 DDR2 -Dell 1505 Wireless-N mini-Card (should I choose dell 1505 or 1490 wireless?what diff? ) -1 year dell care RM4039-300(from promotion -300 for over 4000) total=RM3739 .. My friend tell me that 1gb x 2 is faster compare to 2gbx1 + 1gb x1 when using vista. or he is wrong? if it is good built then I might order it this sunday |

QUOTE(hihihehe @ Jun 8 2008, 06:15 PM) why dont you just clean your hands before touching your lappy? that way save you the trouble from cleaning keyboard. i find that palm rest area are the places that requires cleaning the most regardless of how clean your hands are, especially the right hand side where the intel and windows stickers reside. |

QUOTE(elwwmatrix @ Jun 9 2008, 12:06 PM) sweet.. so that keyboard cover is a thin layer of flat transparent soft plastic right? because from your picture, i dont see the plastic layer forms the shape of the keys of your keyboard, so i assume it has to be flat. does it affect your typing experience? and how about the noise created during typing? where did u get it from and how much does it cost? (im asking too many questions at a time This post has been edited by alexnvidia: Jun 9 2008, 07:15 PM |

QUOTE(elwwmatrix @ Jun 9 2008, 12:25 PM) Yes. Very thin layer, and the typing experience are great, I can type silently, as the silicon protector dampen the click clack from the keyboard. The silicon is very soft,it attached itself to surface like magnet. I bought it from the Computer shop here in town for RM12. but maybe at Lowyat can get cheaper. I have attached few photos from the protector box. very informative indeed. will get one if i can find one. thanks mate. |

QUOTE(hihihehe @ Jun 9 2008, 08:32 PM) oic there is actually a huge flaw in 174.31 released by dell. you would realize this if you play games like company of heroes, etc. the problem with 174.31 is that it causes graphical corruptions in games and instability (crashing&freezing) in certain games, so i do not personally use 174.31. this issue is known on several gaming communities. btw last few days i keep tried for gc drivers...n after all have been tried,i still back to 174.31 driver.it still gif all the best that aside, i agree that 174.31 is really fast in 3DMark06. so far im sticking with 175.70 for better reliability, but still needs further testing as 175.70 is not official. QUOTE(hihihehe @ Jun 10 2008, 01:17 PM) it's the standard RAM included in his system. dell source RAM from several suppliers, hynix is one of them. mine is kingston, all 667 DDR2. high performance RAM are those rated at 800MHz or with CL2 , etc (RAM refresh cycle timings). |

QUOTE(KeV @ Jun 10 2008, 01:26 PM) there's pretty much nothing else anyone of us can do. dell BIOS does not allow OC of any kind, so no luck on trying to OC FSB. and since santa rosa platform will be the last one to use 667MHz RAM FSB, our RAM will not be useful for future use (montiviena will be 800MHz). |

rivatuner is soft OC. i "hard OC" my 8600MGT. the clocks are all "burn" into the GC and i dont require any software to force it to run at high frequency. some argue hard OC is more stable too, i see it as a convenience.

QUOTE(Vorx @ Jun 12 2008, 05:34 AM) I wan to ask. What is the max RAM for this laptop? 4G? Maybe this is post somewhere in here. There are 90pages here. Browsing each page would be crazy.. =] max RAM that can be addressed by any 32-bit OS is only 3.5GB, so no point getting anything more than that. 4GB would be max. dont worry, i will start a V2 thread on inspiron 1520 soon. i agree it's getting a bit too long here. This post has been edited by alexnvidia: Jun 12 2008, 05:40 PM |

QUOTE(pizzaboy @ Jun 14 2008, 11:00 AM) okay.......i'm probably gonna get killed by people saying i didn't search no, you cant use xp drivers for vista. you'll screw up the system. you need to redownload the whole new set of vista drivers. refer to the first page of this thread, there should be a link saying "For more updates, check out Dell Inspiron 1520 Drivers & Downloads official page". click on it, change your OS selection to vista and you are good to go. everything (drivers and tools) u need for vista installation is there. but i did but i can't exactly find a more complied list so i need to ask..... I'm currently on a 1520 with XP, but I want to reformat this and get the Windows Ultimate with SP 1 (Of course LEGAL) Can i use the previous drivers which i've already downloaded for XP with this installation? Any pointers to where I can get a comprehensive guide to the entire installation and whatnot, would be greatly appreciated. And it's either i can't use the search function, or notebookforums don't love me p/s: this thread always caters for newbies and beginners. there's no fear of getting "killed" involved. anything you need to ask, just drop it here, and any of the gurus here will be glad to help you. but of course, if you are a regular, it's a different story if you dont use search. |

QUOTE(hihihehe @ Jun 17 2008, 10:51 AM) ooo look at it this way, if u upgrade to 3GB now, u only waste a single 1GB RAM. if u go for 4GB, not only u have to throw away 2x1GB RAM, u also waste ~0.5GB RAM from 32-bit addressing limitation, and to top it up, u have to pay for 2x2GB RAM. dual channel performance improvement, sadly, is not as superb as being hyped. i personally think u'll get more juice out of 3GB RAM, than 2GB (dual channel) RAM. 4GB RAM of course is better in every way, if u have the $ to spare.so i should add to 3gb or 4gb ram..i know 4gb ram only show 3.5gb in vista 32bit but if upgrade to 3gb it don have dual channel This post has been edited by alexnvidia: Jun 18 2008, 03:50 AM |

QUOTE(elwwmatrix @ Jun 18 2008, 11:45 AM) how much to extend warranty for 3 years? i am thinking to do it too later.does Dell spare parts are more expensive if bought from DELL or shops i think it will cost more when u extend your warranty after you bought your laptop. i bought my 3 years complete cover together with the laptop. so the total amount for warranty alone i paid is about roughly RM600. mind you, the cost of laptop components are extremely expensive. LCD alone can easily cost you RM1K+. once my friend broke her dell laptop's hinge, and it cost RM800+ just to repair it. so better be safe than sorry (IMHO)This post has been edited by alexnvidia: Jun 18 2008, 07:13 PM |
