Philips:
General questions about this 2007 designed webcam SPC900NC
1. Is it compatible with Windows 7 32 bit or 64 bit?
Yes, it is. Auto detect, no drivers require.

2. Max resolution @ 90 fps?
320 x 240 @ 90 fps.

3. Why this dinosaur still for sale from your online store?
This is the main strong selling point why many astrophotographer choose this model. General user usually do not appreciate it.

A brief overview of Webcams and Astronomy

Not all webcams are made equal.

For a webcam to be suitable for astrophotography it needs to be particularly sensitive to light. Webcams with CCD (Charge Coupled Device) chips are generally more sensitive than CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) chips, certainly in webcams, although some more recent makes of CMOS chips used in professional DSLR cameras are able to offer the required light capturing ability.

Generally if you are searching out a webcam for use with a telescope, try to find a CCD webcam, otherwise be sure that any CMOS webcam is sufficiently sensitive and has been tried by other astonomers. The Toucam Pro I and II models were the original favourite choice for astronomers. For example a very cheap webcam, the Philips SPC230NC is a 1.3Mpixel CMOS chip, but its Minimum Illumination is 5 Lux (the amount of light it can detect and requires to operate effectively), whereas the SPC900NC's CCD chip has a Minimum Illumination of < 1 Lux, and hence why it is so popular for astrophotography. A typical family living room is lit to 50Lux, the dark limit of civil twilight is 3.7Lux, the full Moon overhead at tropical latitudes provides 1 Lux, the full Moon on a clear night provides 0.27Lux, a quarter moon 0.01 Lux, and a moonless clear night sky with skyglow gives just 0.002 lux. Total starlight shining through an overcast sky provides 10 to the power -4 lux.

Specifications for video cameras such as camcorders and surveillance cameras often include a minimum illuminance level in lux at which the camera will record a satisfactory image. A camera with good low-light capability will have a lower lux rating. Still cameras do not use such a specification, since longer exposure times can generally be used to make pictures at very low illuminance levels, as opposed to the case in video cameras where a maximum exposure time is generally set by the frame rate.

The SPC900NC uses the same Sony ICX098QB CCD sensor as the Toucam Pro's with a pixel size of 5.6 x 5.6 microns (=0.0056mm), which allows a high resolution (320x240 Pixels non interpolated). This table shows the chip is a 1/4" Type which has 659 pixels horizontal x 494 pixels vertical, in a 14-pin Plastic DIP package with a CXD2450R Combined timing pulse generator, and a primary colour mosaic (Bayer) filter mounted.

Windows 7 compatible.

Hi name,

We have learn that Malaysian cannot afford good product at high price so we do not intend to bring this model (much more advance) that replace on last year model.

Last year model actually is clearance item that Philips allowed us selling at below cost price. None of the single unit able to sell on the shelf.

www.starfinder.org.my has a obs tonight (tuesday) at Taman Wahyu. Pls log into their website and call the contact person - Pang/Mo/Tommy for details on exact site.

Blood Moon is a red coloured moon when the light falling onto moon has been "filtered/dispersed" by the dust and earth's atmosphere leaving only the long wavelength red light. Should see this more pronounced during the eclipse of the moon where Earth blocks most of the direct sunlight to moon.

Happy obs

This is low lux webcam you don't need light like others cheap webcam that you easily found in the market. Your monitor is your light source, is that bright enough? biggrin.gif
You may read the PDF file to find out more smile.gif

the best guide i found is http://home.zonnet.nl/m.m.j.meijer/D_I_Y/spc900nc.htm.

However i've not tried doing it.

Do note that the board modification is delicate and can easily destroy your webcam if you dont have the skills or equipment. That's why i'm looking for those who dare in this forum.

Did you sell the lens for this camera? as in the lens which did not block infrared, because the lens comes with this camera blocks infrared light and cannot be remove, so need to change the lens to allow infrared.

Hi Alex, got your phillips camera already?
I am wondering if you were able to remove the IR blocker?
If the lens could be unscrewed, u could find a replacement lens at one of those security camera shops in pudu.. smile.gif

Davis, this web cam good? I've thinking buying this or Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000. The Carl Zeiss lens one.

The stuff I've been reading online has been mixed. Some users have dead pixels in some units on their Phillips. On the Logitech side...is biasa punya problem la.

You got any good webcam recommend me? I want to buy and have it running ASAP.

Hi Davis, I purchased this webcam via lelong and payment made on 2nd May 09. Waiting for the webcam to arrive... nod.gif

Added on May 5, 2009, 11:29 pmHi Davis. I received it today. Thanks for the speedy delivery. However, was not quite pleased with the image quality, quite blurred and grainy; The image quality of my Edge 1.3MP webcam I bought 2 years ago for about RM50 was sharper. I did turn the dial to sharpen the image but it is still not as sharp as my old one. Maybe my settings are wrong? Nevertheless, the microphone was good.

And I found out that SPC900NC is quite picky in terms of softwares. Recording videos with the given Vlounge software is ok, but when I tried using third party webcam softwares like VH Multicam, super webcam, the video look awful. Please help....

Hi,
You still have to play around the setting and the adjustment ring, nobody complains about it. It is one of the sharpest Philips webcam thus they are use for astronomy purpose.

The following is quoted from http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=971506&st=440
QUOTE(Mr.LKM @ May 8 2009, 12:26 AM)
Bro, you have to turn the physical lens. You don't have to play with the settings to get sharp image. The problem is that your image is not well focused. The only way to fix it is to turn around the lens and find the perfect focal length. It ranges from a few centimeters to infinity. So, the webcam actually covers quite a long range but not limited to close-up.
*
QUOTE(Maestrol @ May 9 2009, 12:05 AM)
Thanks Mr.LKM for your reply. Ya I know how to change the focus by turning the physical lens. I'm dissapointed because the image quality is just so-so compared to my cap ayam 1.3MP webcam. Moreover, the focus is ONLY equally good as my cap ayam webcam when I use the Philips SPC900NC webcam with the Vlounge software. Other webcam softwares like Cyberlink Power Director, webcammax, K3CCD and VH Multicam Studio, the quality of the image captured by Philips SPC900NC is blurred and bad and this rules out the possibilty of using the Philips SPC900NC webcam for a picture in picture video shooting with other webcams. There is no such problem with the laptop's built-in Acer Crystal Eye webcam and also my Cap Ayam 1.3MP webcam which I bought for RM50+ in 2006. I think the problem lies with the Vista Driver.

For a webcam that is touted to be the World's Best when I bought it at lelong.com for a clearance price of RM153, it is dissapointing.
By reffering to the quotes above I don't think my laptop is having issues. If so, maybe the Vista Driver or the webcam itself is having issues. Can you please refer to Philips regarding this? Thanks.

Hi Davis, I'm not into astronomy and I'm into getting a new webcam to talk with parents ...

Alright, could you explain a bit about this webcam? Like why is it so good like you've stated in the previous posts?

Should I have this webcam for web conferencing purpose? If not, would you recommend one ?

BTW Any happy customers want to post up some shots taken by the camera ?

Hi DAViS,

I am interested in purchasing Philips SPC900NC Webcams from you and would like to know...

1) Do you have any stock available?

2) Are your Webcams suitable for use in the UK?

3) Do you deliver to the UK?

4) What do you consider a minimum order to be?

5) Could you PM me to quote a price for your minimum order please?
If your minimum order is 1 unit, could you give me a price for 5, 10, 15 units etc.

6) Do you accept PayPal payments?

I will look forward to hearing from you.

Many thanks,

Astroid
