PETALING JAYA (Feb 1): GCH Retail (M) Sdn Bhd, which operates Giant, Cold Storage, Mercato and Jason’s branded hypermarkets and supermarkets, will exit Sabah and Sarawak within the next couple of months as part of the reorganisation of its operations, The Edge Malaysia reported today.

According to The Edge Malaysia, the retailer is transitioning its outlets in Sabah and Sarawak to established local players instead of closing them down as it did in the peninsula.

A GCH Retail spokesman told The Edge Malaysia, “In Sabah and Sarawak, we are in the process of transitioning all our stores to well-established local retailers who will preserve these stores for the good of our customers in the long term. This change has also presented new opportunities for team members, with many being hired by the new owners.

“We have consulted with the appropriate officials and ministries to ensure we have proceeded with this transition in the most efficient way possible, with the least impact to our customers and team members, whom we will take care of as these changes take place.”

The Edge Malaysia said one of the local players identified to take over the Giant stores is Bataras Sdn Bhd.

The spokesman added that health and beauty stores, which operate under the Guardian name, will continue to operate. “This transition of our food stores [supermarkets and hypermarkets] to local ownerships does not affect our health and beauty business. Guardian stores are performing well in Sabah and Sarawak and we continue to invest in them in serving the people there.

“We firmly believe this is the right transition for our food stores. We have every confidence that the business, and the people in it, will thrive under the new ownership. We are deeply grateful to local community, our customers and all our team members for their years of hard work and service.”

According to The Edge Malaysia, GCH, which is part of Hong Kong’s Dairy Farm International Holdings Ltd (DFI), is the only foreign hypermarket operator that has ventured into Sabah and Sarawak.

Giant cannot compete in east Malaysia due to logistics.

The locals have their own local manufacturers/ factories. And backed by their own shipping / logistics- basically all in house.

Giant outsourcing all that’s why hard to keep up.

Nothing wrong. Hypermarket is very alive just that Giant cannot compete. Miri here, E-mart and Everwin always full, Bruneians flock these stores because of price.

Tax is another issue.
Tax is also called DUTY. It is called duty for a reason, that no one can run away from their 'duty'

But it is a limited choice and product for such small minimarket.

Beside that, price is not as cheap as hypermarket.

Is that mean, Malaysian are getting rich? We need high class market?

this,

the shops are moving down back to grocers/convinience store instead of hypermarts, so you see more village grocers, jaya and bens appearing

as far as I'm aware those have been the biggest movers in the scene

Village grocers, jaya and bens are still chained retail stores. before hypermarkets, the norm was actually more standalone supermarkets or department stores. we are not going back to that era of smaller businesses anymore.

this,

the shops are moving down back to grocers/convinience store instead of hypermarts, so you see more village grocers, jaya and bens appearing

as far as I'm aware those have been the biggest movers in the scene

Somehow true.

Seeing some changing into such market.

product quality is better. But the price also quite high. sweat.gif

But it is a limited choice and product for such small minimarket.

Beside that, price is not as cheap as hypermarket.

Is that mean, Malaysian are getting rich? We need high class market?
*
ppl busy hustling with their free time la, they no longer free n goyang in hypermarket to do their groceries

minimarket assortment is more than enough for average consumers, especially b40

little savings to hunt from hypermarkets tediously aint suitable in current tensed economy

Village grocers, jaya and bens are still chained retail stores. before hypermarkets, the norm was actually more standalone supermarkets or departmental stores. we are not going back to that era of smaller businesses anymore.
*
the standalone supermarkets were kinda very long time ago, way longer than the emergence of hypermarts. cause for the life of me all the standalone supermarkets i remember are all chained retail similar to jaya.

its not smaller business tho, its only smaller stores

yes very long time ago. more like back in 70s and 80s. hypermarkets emerging in 90s killed all of them as they simply cannot compete in price. malaysia did have a few chained department stores such as Parkson then, they also lost their market shares to hypermarkets.

hence, the current phenomenon of hypermarkets end up unable to compete with other locally managed chained stores make me wonder, the management of these hypermarkets have issues since larger sizes are supposed to have better advantages?

I guess they have really high overheads which require really high patronages to be profitable.

The rise of e-commerce had really eat into part of their previous market.

Tesco doesn't even exist in Sarawak so how to call it the biggest? At least Giant I can believe but here in Miri its being beaten by local hypermarket that you probably never heard if you are from the West side. Last Jan already Everwin open its 4th branch, not far from the last Giant in Miri.

ahh yea, you are right the 70s were more individual small stores.

i think its cause the market is changing, what i notice now is people prefer quality and uniqueness. Hypermarkets suck at both cause they are big and mass market, so the smaller shops that offer more customised services and products to the area would win.

i notice this purchasing habit with my parents and me too, they like big shops like starbucks instead of hipster cafes. They tend to prefer to buy in bulk and store than myself who buys and finishes within the week.

i guess the gen x will bring the small shops back for a while, then maybe 1-2 gens down the road they will bring hypermarts back up again

There were 2 Giant in Miri, now left 1 and even that looks like dead hypermaket walking. They been around long before Everwin.

Everwin is fairly new, i think they open first Miri branch in 2016. Then open second in 2018, third in 2019 and now fourth in 2020 which is just a kilometer away from the last Giant. They beat Giant in terms of price and products that caters more to everyday needs. I feel kesian to see Giant dying and have nothing against it but what to do when their competitors does better.

I dont like bijan, but I think GST is a good tax system, to be fair.

Bijan is right to swing in GST, but at the wrong timing, for the wrong reason and at the wrongful rate (too high). On such basis, PH is right to bashed it last time, and to 'moderate' it now.

big hypermarkets offer too much variety. for the majority of customers those products are not even on their radar.

whereas newer players like CS, Everwin, Farley and Unaco focus only on the products found in the basket of a typical consumer. they can focus on a small range of products, ordering more to negotiate for a better price, then pass that down to their customers.

that's why sometimes even the promo price of big hypermarket cannot even beat the normal price of these new players

6% GST. Going through every stage, from factory to wholesale to retail to end-user, everybody have to pay GST. All will be refunded except the end user. That way, very difficult for everyone to escape paying tax.

10% SST. Paid at factory gate only. Because of mark-up through every stage of the trade, the original 10% will snowballs so by the time the end user get their product, it could be far higher than 10%. This is called tax cascading. Easier to evade tax by businesses.

And if use the product in restaurant, you pay another 6% on top of the 10% SST (paid by factory)

the ph govt doesnt promote SST as BN promotes GST because deep inside they know GST is the fairer tax system. everyone pays the tax.

the PH govt just abolish gst as its their 'manifesto' then they realised no gst they hamkaling so ended up introducing more and more other taxes like digital tax and stuff to cover the void left by GST

This statement "mark-up through every stage of the trade" is misleading. There's no mark-up every stage as the following stages do not need to pay sales tax anymore.

This statement "All will be refunded except the end user" is also not really right. On paper it should have been refunded but in reality the previous BN government failed to do so causing everyone to mark-up their price to absorb the 6% GST.

This statement "if use the product in restaurant, you pay another 6% on top of the 10% SST (paid by factory)" is only true if the product comes from factory. In actual fact, a lot of foodstuff are exempted from SST. Do not mislead people as some people mistake the 10% service charge by restaurant as part of SST. The 10% service charge by restaurant are not tax collected by government but compulsory tipping by restaurants.

I believe Giant been established for long in Sabah and Sarawak. And such local player will just recently expanding.

So why hypermarket like Giant can be loose to local hypermarket?

there must be more to that, just that i can't figure out why

SST may suffer Tax Cascading. That means, during every stage the product goes through, the amount of tax cascaded. Go ask your accountant friend. Or here is a simple illustration.

Item cost RM100. SST RM10

So out of factory will cost RM110 (or 100 + 10)

Assuming wholesaler mark up another 10%. You may ended up with 121 (or 110 +11)

Assuming retailer mark up another 10%. You may ended up with 133.10 (or 121 +12.1).

From this simple illustration, the tax part becomes 12.10 instead of 10

As for refund part. ONLY those who produces Zero rated goods or for export will that problem
For normal retailer, no such thing.
