Hi all,

This is my:

1st time posting topic in LYN.
1st time posting photos in forum.
1st time shooting portrait [officially].
1st time joining all the sifu-s.
1st time PS (framing only).

So, standard opening words, I'm really beginner in photography. Please comment and step on me 'kao kao'. All Sifu 'ji gao ji gao'!

Wow, a rather demanding model.

For once, you are WRONG. It's not the White Balance which is out becoz I checked his camera at one point ... BAD C&C from you

Nope ... check the trees behind? They're still green, try again

Had a check on the Exif.
Most settings either on Auto or Normal.
Except High Gain Up & some EV adjustments.

So what's wrong actually? Not familiar with a D40.

his flash settings??

Only pic 2, 3& 4 is ok for me, the rest there something wrong on it esp on the color settings and composition. Practice more dude.

What was wrong tai kor? is image optimization setting wrong, i put saturation as 'normal' instead of 'auto'.

no lar i didn't use flash.

Yeah thanks for this! I'm always sucks in exp.

Saturation set to 'Moderate' or '-1' on the D40 if I can recall properly. I did the same setting for Chiewming.

color washed out.
i believe D40 can performs better than this..

is it good to put the lens hood and lens filter on? i found something extra bright on some portion of the photos, which i suspected may be the reflections on the lens filter?

nope. not caused by the filter

if cause by the filter, then is time for u to buy Hoya Pro 1 Digital UV Filter or B+W UV Filter liao...

more like the setting problem...
bbtat also will get this colour if he still using VIVID mode @ the Japan pondok there...

If you have access to Photoshop, you can always use layer mask. Just use Gaussian Blur to blur the back ground. You can refer to the following link for a great tutorial.

Was the english garden in the Montreal botanic garden? Was there a few months ago but didn't see an english garden...then again the place was HUGE, a true macro HEAVEN.

Are you using kitlens? you can photoshop picture #2, or get ready for some bokeh poison

The english garden i went to is in Winnipeg, i guess canada has a lots of gardens there. I went there during summer last month.

I was using 55-200mm hahaha.. no $ to buy better lense. Do you notice the pic #1 background looks noisy huh? Why is that ar?

Oh you were at Winnipeg? that's where I first landed in Canada. That was during winter and the temperature was around -30C and below studied for 4 months there, some few years ago. Never had a chance to actually look around the place.

The botanic garden in montreal is VERY huge, there's chinese garden, japanese garden, english garden, and a bunch more...all work in progress though.

Picture 1 is not noisy or anything, that's just how bokeh looks like with most consumer lens. The best bokeh I've seen on consumer grade lens is the 70-300mm VR

Yeah i went there for 1 week plus only. It isn't an international airport, where did you come from when u landed in Canada? Shouldn't be far away right? Yeah i heard so the temperature goes lowest at -40C. Not much places we can go at that small town, casinos also much smaller than Genting

Did you make yourself to the Niagra Fall (sorry wrong spelling)? I wished to go there but it's too far.

Well thanks a lot for the grace's photo, i was wondering so much about the flare but didn't know what causes that. lack of experience, i thought it's because of my finger print but it's clean Hahaha. I didnt use hood at first. The filter is on all the way. So until now i still don't know what happened on it. Filter? no hood? or something else? Sifus please advise..

First time I came into canada was through:
Msia -> Sg -> Narita -> Minneapolis -> Winnipeg

I didn't even go to the casino, but my friends did. I was quite a book worm and it was freaking cold out there.

Yeah I went to Niagara, TO, ottawa, Montreal, and QC during my last vacation, photos here:

Flare is usually due to
1) Lens coat (nothing you can do about this...buy other lens)
2) no hood
3) filter

Buy good filter. Some filter like ordinary Hoya is only single coated, if there's alot of room between your outer element and the filter, internal reflection can cause alot of flares. Like my 77mm hoya cpl on my telephoto...it is unusable. I now use hoya super hmc on my telephoto and macro, tiffen haze-1 on my 50mm and wide zoom. Works good

My flights was like this:
Sabah-Narita-Vancouver-Winnipeg

I see. I just have 1 ordinary hoya filter, which i prefer not using it now and see whether i get any flares. I have hood for my 55-200 but rarely use it as people say: Remove the hood to avoid vignetting (although i don't see this with the hood on)

Who told you to remove the hood to avoid vignetting? Usually you'd only get vignetting with hood @ wide angle and lens wide open. Mild vignetting is not a problem, u can easily fix it with photoshop (raw). Vignetting is history...unless you shoot film. My tamron shows vignetting @ 17mm f2.8, absolutely normal. Always shoot with hood even if it's indoor.

Yup, go do your troubleshooting but you can always keep ur filter on now, but always keep the hood on. If your lens still capture those flares again, then only see if it's the filter lor...better protection this way

Either the WB is out or you PP with too much Green.

#1 Composition not that good as it made the model like in a very tight space.

#2 - #4 Composition OK but please clean the grass. Too much garbage.

also the leafs : intentionally put there or what?
4# the plush is too tiny la

The leaves on #2 and #3 are purposely...
Not sure whether it works or not...

IMO doesnt work on Green grass
if on grey solid ground maybe it works
