Shebby has been criticised to death. He is not only a lousy commentator, he is a lousy pundit as well. To top it off, he has a whiny, annoying voice.

He is better then most of the wannabes though. Until someone better comes up I'd say he is the best at the moment. Till that time comes we'll just have to deal with him.

He is ultra biased, that's the only thing i can say about him... when the aussies mount and attack that fizzes out we get something akin to
"they look so disjointed" when the thai attack fails "they are getting there, setting their sights..." Added on July 17, 2007, 2:20 pmoh, he repeats himself too, A LOT This post has been edited by madmoz: Jul 17 2007, 02:23 PM |

Yes he does have limited vocabulary and when he gets stuck, he tries to invent words or he uses sound effect to describe things. Like when he said, "so and so is looking for that 'wow' pass".

Pasukan Malaysia cuba mengatur serangan dari kiri padang... oh.. dia berjaya mengelecik seorang pemain lawan.. hantar ke TENGAH... Azman Adnan MENANDUK... GOOOOOOOOLLLL... cantik sekali tandukan Azman.. menewaskan penjaga gol lawan....

Shebby is dreadful as a commentator...but as a pundit i find him OK. Although he does say some daft things at times, he has a good understanding on the game which is completely absent from most local commentators.

He speaks english well (well.. not as bombastic like Paul Masefield, John Dykes and others) his knowledge is there.. used to play football himself and has a good knowledge on english football.... but he is not the best.
To me, the best is always Martyn Tyler.. this guy is old skool man, been commentating since the 70s and early 80s... very experienced guy. Better than Motsy (John Motson)? Not sure... But better than Hasbullah Awang? Maybe.. haha.. |

Hasbullah Awang, a commentator for Malaysian football with a booming Razman-esque voice is downright hilarious. Like, hes as funny as Razman. Among his legendary commentating skills which I was like fortunate enough to listen to, including the AFC game between Malaysia and China last night:
1. Likens a game between some Malaysian teams to a David vs Goliath scenario... "Ya, itu dia, bagaikan kisah Nabi Sulaiman menentang..um...ya, malangnya saya tidak habis membaca kisah itu..." 2. "Walaupun Malaysia kalah tetapi di mata saya, Malaysia tetap menang" 3. "GOALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!! Malaysia menjaringkan goal!!!!!! GOALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL! Oh tidak, bola memasuki jaring ke belakang" 4. "Alamak" |

as much as i hate hasbullah awang, i'd take him anyday over shebby if i've been given the choice of whose doing the commentary. shebby i found him at times to be overexaggeration/repetition with terrible intonation. hasbullah is the worst with overexaggeration (even small things). bak kata orang, dia suka goreng ayat tu sampai hangus. but he got the right intonation to be a commentator. shebby tu jadi pundit je la.
p/s: zainal abidin raop gets my vote as best commentator (*in msia). he seldom give commentary in English tho This post has been edited by Rocko: Jul 17 2007, 04:09 PM |

i think the problem with most local commentator is... everyone wanna try to look smart on TV. If listen to those EPL commentator, its almost like they are talking to each other (if there are 2 commentator) the entire match. At time, they would talk something else with reference to football, at time they can make joke.
well, shebby i figure try hard to talk technical and sometime i felt he just talk for the sake of talking but dun think they are any good local commentator. |

Shebby got so much to say. However, I don't really mind because he always have his own points though. What ditch me a lot is the monotonous rattle. He should have wider vocabulary and tone. |

favourite quote you always hear from shebby
- yes indeed Paul (or John, or... etc) - i mean.... i mean... 12k for a commentator like him...nah, he may be among the best m'sia has to offer, but between him and Paul, Jamie....way outa class...way way out. thing i hate the most about him is his objectivity. a good commentator should b objective, no favourism to any team on the field. you definitely cant find that with Shebby. and plus... no disrespect to the national team, but shebby's only credibility is ex-national player, that's....for me |

OT a bit. i was at a media event for the current AFC championship sometime back and the ESPN Asia pundits were there. one of them mentioned to me that John Dykes, the face of ESPN Asia's EPL football shows, will be in his last year of contract for them and has not decide whether to continue as presenter or concentrate on producing programs. if not, then espn will hv to look for a new face to helm the epl shows and the front runner is, ofcos, andrew leci. imo, leci is a little 'dry' and lack that 'punch' needed for it. i say, why not make a change frm the norm and go for a female presenter. my vote surely goes to Charlie Webster...

Shebby is not to bad , I think his heart is in the right place .
Masefield is a moron , always shouting at the top of his voice - AHHHHHH , AHHHHHHH , AHHHHHHHH , WHAAAAAT A GOAAAAAAL ! Idiot. You see like most things the commentators scene is controlled by the TV mafias , there will never be like an open casting call for this where the FANS judge who they want , it's always if you are willing to lick the bollocks of the Tv bosses. |

I watched last nights game on RTM2. Commentators were Hasbullah Awang and another dude who's name I can't remember. At one point Hasbullah went, "Ah itu dia, pemain terbaik Iran, Mehdi Mada..medi..midi..madi...ah hahaha, tak boleh cakap pulak nama dia" or something to that effect. It's not like Mahdahvikia sounds like fjdshfkxdfhusei-kov or something right? As a commentator, should you not do some homework and at least make an effort to pronounce someones name right? Even more so when he's been commentating for ages! His partner in crime, I have labeled "Mr. Obvious". Comments like, "Ah pemain Korea tinggi, sepatutnya kita jangan main bola tinggi" Really????, and "dari serangan serang balas, kita boleh jaring gol", make me wanna throw the TV out the window.

Thank god guys ... I thought I'm the only one who hates shebby all the while. He's annoying. Keep repeating the same words, limited vocabulary. He has this "pity for me voice'. Like want to cry like that.
On the other hand, I don't mind Hasbulah Awang, he sucks too, at least he makes me laugh. On last nite M'sia vs Iran match, the other commentator on RTM (don't know who he is) said something like this: "Nampaknya tiada pemain Malaysia yang men-challenge pemain Iran" .. what the hell is men-challenge? Can he use this word when commenting for RTM (the official bahasa baku channel)? |

Yea, His English isn't very good, not very fluent too. I mean being a commentator your English must be excellent, no?

Well, to be a commentator on Astro's channels you'll probably need to be fluent in English... but for RTM it think plain old BM would suffice.
The thing about Hasbullah Awang that I like is his enthusiasm... he really adds to the mood with his over excited voice... it matters not (to me anyways) that 'isi' wise he is full of crap... I LIKE him. Shebby on the other hand has a really boring monotonous voice, and like someone else posted before tries to hard to show that he is full of 'footie' knowledge... cue his long dull rant on player A blah blah blah until he is stopped by his partner as a goal or a foul has happened. He might cut it as a football pundit, but not as a live commentator IMHO. He is like a sedative... or perhaps he is on sedatives This post has been edited by madmoz: Jul 19 2007, 01:53 PM |

QUOTE(hanky93 @ Jul 19 2007, 09:55 AM) Yeah LOL. We should give credit to Hasbullah Awang bcos he appears in almost every sports events covered by RTM!!! (Olympic games, SEA games, Commenwealth, football, tour de langkawi, GP 500cc....etc lol...) maybe bcos RTM doesnt have enough commentators to cover different sports However, he does make mistakes. Most of the time unbelieveable. Examples: "It dia....sedikit percikan air yang banyak" (diving event in Commenwealth 98') |

I find him a bit on the arrogant side.
When he took over as temporary coach for this local team (NS Naza or TM Melaka I think?, he straightaway commented that the previous coach (Irfan Bakti IINM) did a horrible job with the team or something along those lines. The retorts that followed were pretty interesting. Can't remember them exactly though, but the gist of it was the fact that Shebby has achieved nothing significant as a coach. Tsk. Anyway he's the best local english football commentator. |

I don`t think Shebby is a good commentator. He is more of a sports analyst.....something like a co-commentator. I like it when Jamie Reeves comments, good flow and informative comments !

Shebby is so irritatig that I switch him off sometimes. I would rather watch the match in silence.
It's ok if he makes short statements when necessary, but this guy is such a showoff that he goes on and on, non stop sometimes in his high pitch ,over excited voice, trying to show how much he knows about football. Example was the recent Copa America. He kept on making long over elaborate statements until I couldn't concentrate on the match. So I just switched off the sound. |

madrealjl, i'm talking purely on the ability to commentate on any football match. bringing in the suspense into word etc. in this aspect, Hasbullah is way way better than Shebby. yeah, Habullah make some mistakes sometimes but he also will appologise when he realise that he made the mistake. let's put it this way, if there's a football match being reported thru radio, who would you rather listen commentating the match. Shebby or Hasbullah? for me there's not even a question here
as I said earlier, in my opinion Shebby is an OK pundit, but a well below average commentator |

Shebby or Hasbullah? for me there's not even a question here Hasbullah's problem is that he doesn't do any research before he commentates. Often he doesn't know names of players, which is weird because they are given a sheet of paper with players names and numbers on it. He doesn't practice pronunciating the names either. Once, I heard him commentate on a basketball game, and he actually said, "Itu dia, percubaan sepuluh markah". Other than that, he has enthusiasm but should brush up on his research.as I said earlier, in my opinion Shebby is an OK pundit, but a well below average commentator |

yup Duke, I agreed on that. the research part is something he as a commentator should not has to be reminded to do before any event he going to commentate at. he even pronounce Patrick Viera as Patrick Vieri once during a CL match

QUOTE(timothyltw @ Aug 13 2007, 02:57 AM) well at least he sets the standard of commentating for malaysians. he's the only malaysian pundit in espn so clearly he has the ability to give his predictions on matches. he deserves some due respect come on. There's a reason why he's the only Asian pundit on the show...think about it, if the programme was filled with Caucasians, wouldn't it seem a bit racist as the program is made in an Asian country, and is aired in Asian countries? Of course they'll need a bit of Asian folks that speaks decent English to be on the show. There are sooooo many more much qualified Asian pundits that deserve to be on ESPN Asia, but the reason they're not on it is because they have a poor command in speaking English (probably scared all the mat salleh i.e. John Dykes cannot understand them Shebby Singh talks as if he know everything, but in fact, he knows nothing. Labelling him as "best commentator" is as big of a joke as saying Bush is the best USA President. This post has been edited by nck_ck: Aug 13 2007, 04:01 AM |

Well, there's always good or bad.
you want to compare Shebby with other local or Asian pundits, i think Shebby is not too bad, until someone better comes along... I cant remember but sometimes, we do get several Singaporeans on some of the ESPN footie shows....they looked lost as well.... Dont be too hard on his choice of vocabulary...sometimes i look at those famous ex-players invited to John Dyke's show.....its so clear they are there because they want to earn the extra $$$...they give you these very lazy one liners, which every football fan already know...i mean, did we invite these so called famous guests to say things like Man U's attack is free flowing at moment Rafa likes to rotate... Arsenal is full of passing but no finishing... i mean, look here...you're a famous footballer and we want insights...we want things that we normal beings do not know...not things we can see ourselves and read in the press!!! But of course, they look good because English is their mother tongue and plus the funny accent, we tend to respect them...but in truth, i think they're not really doing a great job... I think as long as Shebby dont overdo things...he is acceptable.... |

QUOTE(Liuism @ Aug 9 2007, 11:22 PM) So we should pity him because he's not at their level? Then what the hell is he doing there in the first place?I'm not saying he's bad compared to them, he is bad despite them. Firstly, he doesn't have a wide enough vocabulary to maintain a viewers interest for 90 minutes, as a commentator. He keeps repeating himself, using the same words. Secondly, he either makes really obvious, or really far out comments. Why do you think he is a good commentator or pundit then? |

Good pundit / commentator? Is this the Shebby "Yes John, he is a good player, with a good right foot, yes he does that often and yes theat was a good goal by xxxxx. You don't do that in the penalty box, that is a great ball by xxx" Singh we're talking about?
He doesn't offer any constructive comments, he jumps on a tangent that was so far off it annoys the hell out of the rest of his copundits. As an ex international, he should offer more, but then again, it was not forthcoming, sigh... |

Shebby is somewhat like getting Alex Yoong as a guest commentator on F1
but the, they're probably there because they're the best of the rest. So, so long it's in the range it's still acceptable? |

Unlike Shebby, he has driven at the highest level. He also has a wider vocabulary and better command of the language. Shebby sometimes resorts to having to do sound effects as I previously stated.but the, they're probably there because they're the best of the rest. Speaking of lousy football commentators, does anyone feel that that Football Extra show with Andy Penders and Jamie Yeo is an embarassment? Granted, Andy Penders and that Australian guy who used to play football are pretty good but their co-hosts and style of show are completely cramping what they can really do. I mean, what the hell is that fat Singaporean rapper doing on a football show? And let's not get started on Jamie Yeo.
What Shebby can do is get a show together with Andy and that Australian guy and put on a really good football show. I think Shebby has more comedic talent than he shows. Definitely more than that fat Singaporean nonsense. This post has been edited by david101: Aug 13 2007, 03:29 PM |

I've not heard Andy Penders nor Jamie Yeoh commentate on a match before but I think Andy is a good host, as is Jamie (yes, we all know why they picked a pretty face). It doesn't matter if she doesn't know too much about football, she is hosting the programme, not providing the content. I agree that Heikel is a little 'sesat' though, can't see how he adds value to the show except by pretending to be like he's from the ghetto. Jamie, hot as usual, I won't mind watching the show solely because of her. As for Heikel, I do think that Football Extra is a fun football talk show, hence I'm okay with him. I do love it when he was opposing Shebby during the show when he was commenting about that Gerrard should leave Liverpool. |

If you say that then you'll understand why Shebby is there. And I don't understand why you guys can go on and give Awang and Alex credit and piss on Shebby. They three are all equally shit. Awang- he may be entertaining but limited knowledge and vocabulary on the sports betrays him. Every shot in badminton is almost a smash or drop shot in Awang's books. Still, he's RTM's poster boy. Alex- has knowledge in F1 but limited in comparison to F1 ITV's people and he sounds boring as well. Not being able to communicate it. Shebby- it has been said time and time again, hasn't it? Jamie is tolerable but Paula on F1 is obnoxious. |

i think Shebby is trying his best to improve Malaysian's interest towards the local football scene. thats one of the main reason why the started MyTeam in the first place. For the past decade our local football quality has been deteriorating.
We used to be at par with Japan and look now. Japan is already in the worldcup and we are still as lousy as usual. Its mainly because Japanese have passion towards their local football scene n gives full support but we malaysians give OUR full support to EPL. sad isn't it? |

NO aztechx, I think that Charlsea are in great trouble but YES aztechx, fame travels through sperm just like Steven Gerrard plays best at right-back.

He is indeed an avid Spurs supporter. You'll notice this each time the panel begin to talk about Tottenham. It's pretty obvious. There are a lot of fans from his generation that are Spurs fans. I know a handful myself.

Obviously Shebby is not the best commentator, but he is not where he is now if he is not good. Give some credit to this guy laa, he knows what he's doing and he's not afraid of being wrong. You think its easy being a pundit....having to guess the outcome of every game and be at risk of being wrong for that?
Any good commentator can be darn right boring after a while. Problem is, there isn't many local commentator that has the right qualification/quality like Shebby. As for his very, very annoying part...that's his style for God sake. Don't take that away from him laa. Just like Karam Singh Walia, without his absurd pantun, he'll just be another reporter. |

Shebby has been improving through the years. I remember watching him the first few times and got irritated but he has been improving. The insights he gives for EPL indeed is not bad and definitely beats any Malaysian commentator...

Shebby needs to improve his grammar and stop stating the obvious. "Yes John, the world is round John". "Yes John, the grass is green John".
On countless occasions I've seen him engage in debates with McMahon and Paul Masefield, and time and time again, he seems to lose the plot. Once when McMahon asked if he's played in England, he went, "no but I've played a friendly against England". Erm no Shebby, not quite the same thing |

Yea, sometimes that really pisses me off. Kesian Shebby kena buli. But he's alot tougher and resilient than he looks. That's why I respect that guy. He's not all talk, but he also contribute to the football community...especially Malaysia. After reading some of the comments about shebby, it is really a shame that many of us (malaysian) tend to sit there and criticize people. Hey lets give credits to this guy. It is not easy to talk especially in front of the tv. Until now he is the only malaysian pundit out there and week by week giving some interesting comments about football. Just give this fella a chance and we juz sit back and enjoy his sometimes outrageous comments...Isnt it fun?

To be fair Duke, Shebby seems to be the only one out of the 4 who likes to think out of the box..sure his comments at times may be daft and controversial but there are times when i can see where he's coming from but he still gets fried by the other guys. You can praise McMahon, Masefield, and Reeves but the thing is they always go with the flow and they change their opinions as quickly as the most fickle of fans. You see McMahon slagging Man Utd at the start of the season when they had their poor run of form and suddenly he's all praise for them now. Arsenal were downplayed at the start, and now it's all good. |

Arsenal were downplayed at the start, and now it's all good. My criticism of Shebby has always been:a) He has a limited vocabulary - Being a commentator/pundit, your ability to speak is of the utmost importance, even before content. No point in having something really profound to say when no one understands you. Repeating the same words over and over again make you really annoying to listen to. b) He likes stating the obvious - Don't think I need to elaborate further. Sure he thinks out of the box, but sometimes his suggestions make his come across as an astronaut. To his credit however, he did say sometime last season that neither Sissoko nor Kuyt are Premiership material, and it would seem that he is right. Again, I'm not judging him as a person but as a commentator/pundit. |

I won't go into his commentating since what most of you guys are saying about him is mostly right .
On the other hand .......... If you're all whining about Shebby being a pundit who is biased towards spurs then what about McMahon ? Day in day out , he keeps praising Liverpool (eg: Liverpool have too much quality) and always predicts Liverpool will win although their form says otherwise. Even the betting advisor (whatever his name is) keeps picking on him because of it . Also tends to use "we" when talking about Liverpool too . Actually I for one have never thought that Shebby was biased towards Spurs. I have met him in a bar before and had a conversation with him over a few beers and he comes across as a decent bloke, which is why I said my attacks weren't personal. A lot of people are the bar were giving him a lot of stick for being a Spurs fan but he just smiled and laughed it off. I don't think his comments are biased. On the other hand .......... Of course you can't compare his allegiance to the club with Shebby's. I mean McMahon actually played for the club, grew attached to them and has lived there. He however is not completely biased as you allege him to be. I'm sure some blokes can back me up on this; he has some pretty strong words to say about the club like "why keep rotating and not play your best players each week?", "why does Rafa always look at this game with the next in mind? Why not focus on each game as they come?", "Liverpool simply haven't got the quality". These are just some of his comments. He may be a Liverpool fan at heart and it may show sometimes, but even he isn't as optimistic as some posters here. |

Eg: You're watching an Arsenal vs Newcastle game . And you support newcastle ... Fabregas scores .... Commentator : "OMG FABREGAS WHAT A GOAL WHAT A GOAL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Then the commentator will go on and talk about how great a side Arsenal is for the next 5 minutes . Would you feel pissed off? It doesn't happen in all matches but sometimes tends to happen . Although i am a Man Utd fan , i really dislike it when the commentator says something in the terms of "Can Man Utd score ? They always score !!! " . PS : I forgot to mention this on my last post but the IMHO worst pundit on espn is Sassy Kumar (although he is only on occasionally) |

shebby aint a commentator he's more of a pundit imo.he tends to stray off from the action during matches.better just stick to those football focus/cakap-cakap bola -like shows and not match commentating.and i really like it when mcmahon usually seems annoyed by his comments soo much
but thank god it aint zainal abidin rawop |

Arab ones are best.
E.g. Abdalla passed to Al mutalib who shots from edge of box, blocked by defender, out for a corner. This would sound in arabic as: Abdalla blah blah blah Al Mutalib blah BLAH AHHH ahlamdulillah ahlamdulillah ahlamdulillah ahlamdulillah.... Even a boring 0-0 game during Asia cup e.g. Qatar v Vietnam sounded so exiting when they did the telecast on Astro Arab channel i think channel 25 . Much better then Mase & co at ESPN/Star sport. |

He was a solid centreback for KL during his prime days...
Shebby can sometimes say something really amazingly nonsense... but i noticed that as compared to these fellas: Paul Masefield and some of those `ex players' (McActeer, Robson, Sharpe), Shebby is much better.... These jokers are alway singing the same song but ride on their Mat Salleh accent and reputation...but no true analysis in their comment...for example, the very familiar tunes they always sing -MU: Tevez and rooney wont work. MU not enough striker, Saha is injury prone, blah blah blah -Arsenal: they will suffer from Henry departure. this season is for the boys to grow. And then, they say `the Arsenal young team is more expressive after Henry's gone. come on..you can read this stuffs any where in internet...TELL US SOMETHING WE DONT KNOW! Shebby has more insight as compared to them but he is prone to the occasional foot in mouth diseases.... I think Jamie is the best (the male one..hahaha. Very solid, very cool. MacMahon advantage is he is the biggest football star of them all and he does provide some good comments based on his experience.. This post has been edited by nando: Feb 14 2008, 02:03 PM |

I remember Shebby commentating once during the recent KL Futsal World 5's. He was all for implementing the rules we have on the futsal court onto the football pitch... Rolling substitutions, kick-ins, paused time, time-outs and a few others... Madness

Martin Tyler is the best of the best if u r toking abt commentating in English for soccer...Andy Gray is not bad oso... This post has been edited by supadupa: Feb 14 2008, 02:51 PM |

QUOTE(Hevrn @ Feb 14 2008, 02:40 PM) I remember Shebby commentating once during the recent KL Futsal World 5's. He was all for implementing the rules we have on the futsal court onto the football pitch... Rolling substitutions, kick-ins, paused time, time-outs and a few others... Madness There was also talk about having 7 substitutes on the bench. I for one am not against the idea of having more substitutes involved. It may benefit teams with a large squad but it will also ensure that players are fresh and the pace of the game can be maintained through the 90 minutes of play. |

It's practiced in the Champions League probably to counter the fatigue from travelling long distances and also coz of the more tactical nature required in such an international competition. Having more choices sitting in the bench would mean being able to deploy a more vast array of tactics when playing clubs you don't encounter as often as those they play every year in the domestic competitions

I remember the early days, when Jamie and Mase would have these sheets of datas with them everytime they go on show, presumably with datas and information of the players/ games etc cos they keep referring to it, but Shebby just always sits there with palms clapped together, trying to look composed and just blurting out everything more as a reaction than a real analysis. I used to dislike him for that, cos it shows lack of respect to your job and to the viewers. However i admit he has improved over the years and is more aware of the issues at hand and does bit more research into matters. But everytime he discusses issues on a more global nature (for example the bung scandal few years back, the imposing of transfer window in EPL few years back etc) where he had no personal information/ knowledge from his own playing days (and obviuosly did not do much research on it) he will just be talking what i seriously think is just c*ap. Its just my 2 cents though. I agree with most when they say he may be an ok pundit but not a good commentator..... but cant deny he adds some entertainment value to the show...no direspect to him, but there is a certain kind of chemistry whenve he, dykes, Macca, mase and Jamie are around...
