u have summed up everything.

which i think is correct given all the comments posted in this and other threads so far.

the only unconfirmed info is the bit rate used - some have said:

.. old STB lan4 uses 8mbps
.. new black STB uses 4mbps
.. old playtv apk uses 2mbps
.. new playtv (on ATV, it is labeled "unifi tv") uses... ?mbps?

given above, it may be that unifi tv and unifi playtv may be merging, consolidating.

i.e. whether on STB or app, whether black box or yr own box, whether smart ATV or PC, it will be just one APP... maybe 4mbps.

and this app will be called UNIFI TV, "playtv" to be forgotten.

old silver non-android boxes be phased out; white android boxes can still be used but will be on new APP, no need lan4.

just my speculation... pls bear with me. tongue.gif

From my own measurements:

- Old STB = constant 8.8 Mbps
- New PlayTV app on phone = average 5 Mbps

Modded PlayTV ATV app, need to install on my non-ATV box, possible?

5 Mbps is OK & standard for many legal streaming services, but as we're spoiled with silver/white STB, it's natural we demand the black STB should be at least as good.

In my case, I'll wait until 4K channels are actually available on Unifi TV. 25 Mbps 4K streams a far-fetched dream?

that's about right.

and yes, i do not accept quality lower than the already mediocre silver STB! tongue.gif

if netflix, even astrogo can do hd streams nicely, why can't they do catch up?
from the posts in another thread, there is a modded 1.1.6 ATV apk but has not been shared publicly.

Your requirement need at least Apple TV 4K or even the real-deal 4K Blu-Rays biggrin.gif

Actually can't just compare average bitrate directly with other streaming services like this. This is because Unifi TV uses on-the-fly encoding with a constant bitrate. Other streaming services like YouTube are on-demand video services. They can take time to do 2-pass variable bitrate encoding with a high quality encoder. So those services can maintain OK quality with average 4Mbps+ due to the higher quality encoding and because the variable bitrate can actually peak at 6Mbps+ for certain high-motion parts and drop lower than 2Mbps for simple parts.

That's correct. Of course can't do direct comparison, just based on own eyes. You need a good HDMI capture card running off the old STB for (almost) direct comparison.

Because the new STB is streaming the same content as the App webstream, while the old one is a direct feed using it's own dedicated VLAN.

From what I tested, the old STB is 50FPS, at least 10Mbps quality at 720p, while the web stream is 25FPS, 4 or 5 Mbps at 1080p.

Also due to the STB feed being direct, it's at least a few minutes faster than the web stream that has to be re-encoded first

How you test the old STB and get 720p & 10 Mbps? What I see is consistent 8-9 Mbps. New one varies, normally 3-4 Mbps, but some channels eg BBC Earth can reach 6-8 Mbps.

I assume both encoded differently. Older STB probably using older codec on constant bitrate so even bad TV1 stream still shows 8-9 Mbps. New one probably uses newer codec with variable bitrates, similar to Youtube.

Old STB probably still better, but for me not much, and I can no longer tolerate a long cable just for my white STB.
