While electronic payment solutions may offer consumers many benefits, there are some drawbacks for petty traders.

Several wet market traders in SS2, Petaling Jaya interviewed told Malaysiakini that an "e-wallet" transaction takes up more time.

Many traders at the market have already put up QR codes for their e-wallet accounts several months ago with the help of agents from payment firms.

A normal transaction would see a buyer scanning the QR code and keying-in the amount they wish to transfer.

The vendor would then have to check their phones if they had receive the correct amount.

For roasted poultry seller Agnes Chong (above), this process can be pretty cumbersome since vendors need to operate a mobile phone, on top of handling cash.

"Take the you tiao (Chinese crullers) seller at the adjacent stall. By the time he's done with one transaction, his wares might already be charred.

"If you're busy, you probably won't want to use it. For me, I'll put the QR code card away during the busy festival months," Chong said.

Sometimes, new users don't know how to pay using e-wallets and Chong said she had to spend time teaching them - an added inconvenience.

Another problem for Chong was the fact that transactions take two days to reach her bank account.

"If we rely on e-wallet transactions exclusively, then we will have to dig our reserves to pay suppliers first.

"If it's a small amount, then it is okay. If it involves a large amount, then I think vendors might shy away from e-wallets," she said.

Several of the traders at the markets said they have had a limited number of e-wallet transactions in the past, but expected it to pick up, now that the federal government is encouraging it.

Vegetable and fruit seller Kelly Ho (above) believes that e-wallet transactions do have benefits.

For instance, Ho said, consumers, don't have to wait for change when transacting with e-wallets and it was safer for them too.

As a vendor, she said, e-wallets make recording transactions easier.

Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng was at the market yesterday morning to promote the use of e-wallets.

The federal government is incentivising the use of e-wallets by offering RM30 for new sign-ups to three e-wallet providers.

"This is is an important step towards a cashless society, which will help to practice transparency and accountability.

"If (one day) we go completely cashless, we can cut down a lot of corruption," Lim said.

The only thing good about ewallets for petty traders is no need give out changes which they always have trouble, no need ask customer ada kecik ah?
But then again I think they prefer cash in hand

This, the first thing after I came across this article is what you said.

I mean as if conventional CC/debit is a fast transaction? I had wasted so much time queue at the cashier counter just people some slowpoke paying with CC and it’s either processing very slow or got rejected.

Have to launch app > go search for payment menu> wait for camera to launch (so long for lagging android phones)>scan and app processing> key in amount>fingerprint authorization (again sampah certain android phone x detect fingerprint the first try)>processing.. if pakai unifi mobile or umobile or even digi even worse network fail

And this is considering u already have funds in your e-wallet

First of all, the we need inter ewallet payment allowed.

And a much more efficient way of payment.

In india for example, the Google Pay acts as a mere intermediary from your bank account without the need to topup and maintain the money at different wallets.

encourage for not only the the retailers to use ewallet. big big company supplier also must have use so that there is an ecosystem supporting this cashless.

if retailes received money in wallet, lepas tu nak tunggu masuk bank, baru boleh bayar supplier, stupiadlah. habiskan duit bayar transaction fee je.

Dunno why hawkers or pasar malam sellers wanna agree to using e-wallets.
Government can easily audit while saving cost from printing cash.

And stupid e-wallets always have remaining balance that u can't cash out iiam.
Like here I only use Grabpay coz have points. No points or incentives, I won't even bother.
Credit card paywave way more convenient.

It's just some governments' propaganda around the world, to save on money printing and less tax evasion.
Only use if have incentives. Grabpay in SG also MCB, slowly reduce points like Grabcar now.

2) Sometimes, new users don't know how to pay using e-wallets and Chong said she had to spend time teaching them - an added inconvenience.

3) Another problem for Chong was the fact that transactions take two days to reach her bank account.

personally I noted the payment may not be successful and will by own integrity find the way to pay back the shop. I done it at 7-11, and local shop I eat lunch at.

First of all, the we need inter ewallet payment allowed.

And a much more efficient way of payment.

In india for example, the Google Pay acts as a mere intermediary from your bank account without the need to topup and maintain the money at different wallets.

A lot of people also do something similar. See money on the road, pickup, and find a way to "return" the money, by buying from some shop. smile.gif

Sounds like most problems will dissapear when people are more used to ewallets. Also a matter of how you use it. Instead of checking own phone can tell customer to show their proof of transaction, while serving the next customer.

It's all just a mater of adapting. It works well in China, Sweden and India. Can work in Malaysia too.
