The whole system sucks and it promotes discrimination. It should be abolished. The better alternative is already available. Everyone have equal rights and opportunities. No one should be judge base on his or her caste. The reluctance of a lot of Indians to abandon caste system is one if the reason they are behind China.

Nothing complex, discrimination is discrimination.
Same goes in Malaysia but with a slight different, bumi shout ketuanan, but in reality, majority bumi themselves lives in Malaysia like parasites. Bumi only have 3 caste, rich politicians, rich royalties and poor (non of those 2 types) bumi, which where Im belong to, right now.
Percentage of rich bumi that are not in those rich bumi categories are way smaller than other major races in malaysia.
But we are far superior in terms of social and economy, despite 20 times less population than them.
in india, a farmer children will only know how to farm. he does not know anything else. if he came from a certain caste, that caste traditionally only know how to farm. any form of social progression is for that person to become a better farmer.
if he tries to break away from that caste, he will have trouble to acquire any sort of support. lets say he wants to become a trader or a businessman, nobody in his community will want to support him or even if they want to they dont know how.
lack of support system in his community will cause him trouble if anything goes wrong with his business. not only in his business but also in his social acceptance.
this also applies in a way to Malaysia. you cannot expect a felda settler son to suddenly become a businessman because he definitely lacks the knowledge, financial capability and support system within his community. a 3rd generation chinese sensei also cannot suddenly decide to become an open sea fisherman because he definitely do not have the support system.
which come to a conclusion, to breakaway from caste system, a proper education and an effective support system is important. a country like India is high in corruption in all level of society. this aspects are inter related and the reason why its a complicated issue that need many parties to involve. simply implying a liberal laissez faire western concept without real understanding on the ground does not work and will only cause disasterous.
