Religious affairs minister Mujahid Yusof says the issue is on the method of implementing Jawi and this requires constructive discussion among all parties.
PUTRAJAYA: Chinese educationist groups Dong Zong and Jiao Zong (Dong Jiao Zong) today concurred that the proposed introduction of Jawi writing into the Bahasa Melayu subject at national-type schools is not intended to convert non-Muslim students into Muslims.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Mujahid Yusof said this was conveyed to him during his meeting with representatives of Dong Jiao Zong and 11 Chinese and Tamil education-related organisations at his office here today.

He said they agreed that there was no motive of Islamisation in the move to introduce Jawi writing to non-Muslim students and accepted Jawi as part of the country’s cultural heritage that should be respected by all parties, like Chinese calligraphy, Tamil writing and those of other ethnic groups in the country.

“We also agree that there is no issue of Dong Jiao Zong being against learning Jawi and that Dong Jiao Zong is not a racist organisation.

“The issue that was raised is on the method of implementing it, which requires constructive discussion among all parties,” he said in a joint statement at a press conference shortly after the meeting.

Among those present at the one-and-a-half-hour meeting were United Chinese School Committees (Dong Zong) chairman Tan Tai Kim; Malaysian Association of Chinese School Teachers Association (Jiao Zong) chairman Ong Chiow Chuen; the Federation of Chinese Associations Malaysia (Huazong) deputy secretary-general Yong Yew Wei and the Global Organisation of the People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) president A Ravendiran Arjunan.

Mujahid said all of them also agreed on the need for all races to collectively oppose any racist agenda to safeguard the harmony enjoyed by the people in the country and avoid racial animosity.

He said all parties also agreed on the need to unite to ease the tension on issues that touched on the sensitivity of others.


Meanwhile, Tan said the meeting was important as it provided an opportunity for them to give their views and stand on the matter, as well as other issues of concern to the public.

“Dong Zong is open-minded and respects diversity. It is prepared to hold dialogues and interact with the relevant parties to resolve any misunderstandings for the sake of the country’s harmony and unity,” he added

Dong Jiao Zong does not accept, agree with and execute the Jawi Scripts Learning Guidelines imposed by the Ministry of Education; it not only defies the decision made by the cabinet and DSKP, but also disregards the “Education Act 1996” in which sovereign rights were endowed to national-typed Chinese primary schools including other vernacular schools. The parent empowerment to decide on Jawi scripts learning implemented by the Ministry of education not only ruptures the harmonious and amiable relationship of national-typed Chinese primary schools, but also further marginalises the rights of the Board of Directors and Parent Teacher Association. More severely, this to-be-implemented practice will cause the loss of sovereign rights of the Board of Directors towards national-typed Chinese primary schools.



In view of this, the expanded joint meeting between Dong Zong and Jiao Zong held on December 12th unanimously decided to act responsively to defend the sovereign rights of the Board of Directors and protest against the absurd decision of the Ministry of Education with the following pronouncements:

Dong Jiao Zong insists that the Board of Directors of national-typed Chinese primary schools owns the decision making rights, the Jawi Scripts Learning Guidelines forwarded to these schools by the Ministry of Education must be withdrawn at once;
Dong Jiao Zong calls all national typed Chinese primary schools to return the Jawi Scripts Learning Guidelines to the Ministry of Education as a gesture of protest;
Aiming to unite all the Chinese communities in this country, a nationwide Chinese communities meeting will be held on the 28th of December to urge the central government to attend to public opinion, viz., to withdraw the Jawi scripts learning intent in both national-typed Chinese and Tamil primary schools; and
To inform all Board of Directors of the member states to hold a Board of Directors and Parent Teacher Association joint meeting to strongly protest against the implementation of Jawi scripts learning, as well as to collect signatures and stamps for petition.

Hari ini saya menjejaki Bangunan Dong Zhong bersama beberapa pimpinan tertinggi iGuru untuk menyerahkan memorandum bantahan terhadap Dong Zhong berhubung polemik tulisan jawi.

iGuru diwakili saya bersama Ust Agus Lokman Timbalan Presiden dan Dr. Sharifah Hanum bt Syed Sahuri. Manakala pihak Dong Zhong diwakili En. Ng Chai Heng selaku Setiausaha Agung dan En Yap Heng Lung Eksekutif Projek Silang Etnik dan Budaya.

Meskipun di permulaan diskusi agak tenang tetapi ia menjadi semakin panas ketika membahaskan isu sekolah satu aliran dan polemik tulisan jawi. Pihak Dong Zhong tegar menolak pembelajaran jawi di tahun 4 SJKC dan SJKT dan berkeras supaya hal keputusan pembelajaran tulisan jawi di serahkan kepada Lembaga Pengelola Sekolah bukan pihak PIBG , ibubapa dan murid- murid.

Pihak iGuru telah menjelaskan pendirian tegas membantah tindakan Dong Zhong yang cuba mencabar kedudukan Bahasa Melayu dan menyeru untuk menghormati apa yang termaktub di dalam perlembagaan dan Akta Bahasa Kebangsaan.

Kesimpulan yang dapat difahami ialah ;
1. Dong Zhong melihat naratif pendidikan melalui kacamata perspektif "kecinaan" dan menganggap kewujudan sekolah- sekolah cina sudah lama bertapak dan British mengiyakan perkara tersebut.

2. Dong Zhong menolak konsep sekolah satu aliran dan memperjuangkan konsep multi language. Ini bererti pihak Dong Zhong akan terus berjuang untuk pengekalan sekolah vernakular.Sehingga kini terdapat 80 buah sekolah SMPC.

3. Perjuangan Dong Zhong merentasi parti dan meletakkan identiti, bahasa dan budaya mesti dipelihara melalui pendidikan. Justeru badan yang paling berkuasa ialah Lembaga Pengelola Sekolah ( LPS). Sebarang keputusan pihak KPM tanpa mengambil kira perbincangan LPS akan membawa konflik antara dua pihak.

4. Dong Zhong menganggap pembelajaran jawi adalah satu bentuk islamisasi. Ia turut disokong pihak kaum India yang mendakwa ramai anak india memeluk islam disebabkan belajar tulisan jawi walaupun ini hanya tuduhan tidak berasas.

5. Dong Zhong konsisten memzahirkan sikap rasis dalam memperjuangkan pendidikan cina. Oleh itu kakitangan dan staf adalah mereka di ambil dari mereka yang boleh bercakap Bahasa Cina.

6. Dong Zhong tidak menggunakan silibus sejarah yang ditetapkan pihak KPM. Mereka menggubal kurikulum sejarah menurut perspektif sendiri dan memasukkan lebih banyak kandungan berkaitan sejarah dunia berbanding sejarah Malaysia. Mereka melihat penulisan sejarah negara dimanipulasi orang politik. Hakikatnya mereka gagal memahami sejarah negara dengan tepat dan betul.

7. Dong Zhong kekal ekstrim dan bersifat cauvinis dalam mempertahankan pendidikan kaum cina meskipun berdepan ugutan mana- mana pihak termasuk kerajaan yang memerintah. Bagi mereka kepentingan kaum itu adalah mempertahankan identiti dan bahasa mereka. Oleh itu mereka akan all out untuk hal tersebut dari sudut kewangan dan fasiliti.

8. Dong Zhong menganggap sistem pendidikan sedia ada hanya mementingkan satu kelompok sahaja iaitu mereka yang belajar di SK manakala murid- murid di SJKC/ T dipinggirkan atau berlaku diskriminasi. Sebenarnya pihak Dong Zhong menolak untuk menerima sistem pendidikan aliran perdana.

Semoga rumusan ini adalah permulaan mengkaji lebih mendalam sistem pendidikan kelolaan Persekutuan Persatuan- Persatuan Lembaga Pengurus Sekolah Cina Malaysia.

iGuru akan terus memberanikan diri berdepan dengan pihak Dong Zhong secara lebih berdepan dalam mempertahankan kepentingan nasional.

I do not agree DZ about it will convert student but i also do not agree MOE add it into syllabus although it was mere 3 pages, there is no guarantee MOE wont go add another few more page next year after implement for the student when they go to standard 5. and even more then they go to standard 6.

the future of education in malaysia is bleak..spend so much time on this jawi issue instead of trying to improve the standard of teachers and creating more dynamic teaching method that will benefit the students as a whole.

i think all this can be avoided if the news of learning jawi come out earlier that its 3 pages teaching the words meaning on the paper money.

its very normal, for example most places teach about latin words on their country crests or badges.

Jawi 3pages in BM memang bodo. The 3 pages better used for thinking and intensify bahasa language . The 3 pages can be used to generate new words in bahasa or spelling quiz. Instead it was written as a jawi introduction to the students. I think I can explain this verbally without wasting the printing cost, designer cost, writer etc. 3 pages cost rm 0.50 cents. 1 million pages sudah berapa? Publisher yg kaya. Bodo punya PH.
