Believe it or not there are actually alot similiarities with Indian languages and Malay language.

This is because Malay took heavy influence from Sanskrit.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_loanwords_in_Malay

Look at the amount of words from Sanskrit, Hindi and Tamil.

That is a good reason why Bangla or anyone with familiarity with Indian language picks up Malay easier than Chinese.

My point is the similarities between Indian languages and Malay language. The more similar it is, the easier to learn it.

Another example is both are agglutinative languages where as Chinese isn't.

ive met plenty of ppls who cant converse well in BM/BI myself... but to the extent of struggling to understand BM, and cant understand english at all, while living in kl, this is the 1st time...

theres plenty of ppl who cant speak malay/english in rural/pedalaman area. eg. ibans in rumah panjang, old murut ppl in kalabakan, ive met them before. but that because little to no interaction with outsiders...

but in KL, how did u evade mingling with other race?

You can't speak Malay / English, so you don't mix with Malay / English people much, and because you don't mix with Malay / English speaking people, you then didn't learn any Malay or English.

Its a vicious circle.

I was born in Selangor/KL, lived here my whole life.

Honestly people like what you describe exist, but very rare.

Even my racist father that failed the PMR of his day (he is 60+ now) knows more Malay than what you described.
