JOHOR BARU: Malaysians seeking jobs in Singapore might have a tough time getting hired by companies and employers in the republic in the future.

The Singapore government had on Jan 1, announced that it would update rules to ensure employers do not discriminate against Singaporeans workers by hiring foreigners.

Johor South SME Association adviser Teh Kee Sin said if the new policy was adopted, it would surely affect many Malaysian job seekers including school-leavers and university graduates.

“It’s a known fact many Malaysians are keen to seek jobs in the republic, both in blue and white collar positions because of the strong Singapore dollar, ’’ he said.

Teh pointed out that Singapore companies engaged foreigners including Malaysians for two key reasons – these were jobs Singaporeans were not interested in taking up and a shortage of manpower to fill up the job vacancy.

He said despite the high cost of doing business in the city state, many global companies were still investing heavily in the republic.

Teh said this was because of the business-friendly environment, efficient government and transparent polices there compared to neighbouring Asean countries.

He said many firms based in Singapore favouring foreigners for various posts clearly showed that foreigners could do the jobs as well as Singaporeans.

“Singapore should look at foreign workers as complementary to their national economic growth, ’’ said Teh.

He said at the same time, the Malaysian government still needed to create more job opportunities for Malaysians by attracting more foreign direct investment into the country.

Johor Indian Business Association president S. Sivakumar said the mere mention of giving priority to Singaporeans in employment could become a nightmare for most Malaysians already working in Singapore or planning to work there.

https://www.thestar.com.my/metro/metro-news...Y8CZu6ZKgJebho8
“Malaysians will have to put up with lack of promotion or even expect retrenchment, ’’ he said.

Sivakumar said the government should start reviewing the investment policy and proactive measures were needed to attract more capital intensive and high technology investments into the country.

“We should seriously attract more investments that are in tandem with automation and technology-driven industries and less on labour-intensive activities, ’’ he said.

Sivakumar said failing to do so, the country would continue to depend on foreign workers who are taking advantage in every sector, including dominating the food and beverage sectors and competing with macro local businesses.

Unofficial figures show that some 330,000 Malaysians commute daily from Johor to Singapore to work.

There are 2 groups of msians working in SG.......

1st group - those who are there as banglas........you do menial labour and get paid a singaporean bangla wage, but go back to JB and kaya raya......RM 6k to 9k sebulan. Some of them can still hold on to their jobs only if those jobs are not automated. Singaporeans do not want to do bangla jobs unless they do not have a choice - the aged, the ones without any skills.

2nd group - those who are there as executives i.e. "expat". These people compete with the best in the world and if they are hired, it's because they have skills that the company needs. No matter how the government changes the rules, these people will be least affected as long as they are still valued in the firm. People like this would include, lawyers, experienced engineers, senior management of companies - SM's/directors and above, management consultants, senior bankers, senior professional service providers. This group of people is very mobile, they can find themselves working in HK, in Australia, in Europe or North America when the opportunity is given.

u forgot the 3rd group - the uni freshies or young executives that go work in SG to get the x3 SG dollars, these people directly competes with SG people for the jobs, and their skills are easily replaceable by SG people too, but companies hire them because they are slightly cheaper to hire and more hardworking than SG people and can be easily exploited to work more for lesser pay compared to SG people, this group doesnt have the ability to work in australia europe america etc yet and they are the least secure group

This is not the first time. It happens in almost every economic downturn. If you have been in Singapore long enough, you should remember this having been said at least once or twice. When the economy recovers, it is back to "normal".

tbh, sg also have their own "bumi" policy.

I work there before, sometimes damn piss to see incompetent locals rise up to the same rank as you, but know nothing, and push their job to you, expect you to kaodim everything.

the only "expats" they worship are the whites, they can do no wrong. Sometimes they also do no work and get paid biggrin.gif

Yes, you are right.

Having said that this group should work in KL first for 3-5 years, then move to SG with some work experience. When in SG, be a bit abrasive, other will kena tekan.

Fair, this is where you need to show how big your penis is.

It's ok to be abrasive and if you have to throw an angmoh under the bus, do it. Local SG people worship angmoh because capable Msians do not assert themselves. It's ok to be a bit of an asshole, We msians are encumbered by a broken system, but those of us who are capable are far more capable than the SG people....given that we did not have any mollycoddling from the government.

And yes, assert yourself as an expat. Party like one, behave like one. It's fair game. The benefit of msians is that we can economise when we need to, we can live cheaply and we can live extravagantly.

I was looking at a few job ads in Singapore and noticed this :

1. Ads on LinkedIn or Glassdoor reroute to a Singaporean website https://www.mycareersfuture.sg
2. To login to https://www.mycareersfuture.sg/, you need a SingPass
3. To get a SingPass, you need either of the following (quoted from http://www.ifaq.gov.sg/SINGPASS/apps/Fcd_f...x#FAQ_2101385):
