Hi, as titled. I just change my front tyres to PS4 for RM400/donut but feels like its too expensive since I’m not driving in race tracks.

Now for back tyres I’m looking at either UC6 or Hankook V12 C2. Or perhaps any other recommendation?

Oh GY ATM2 seems decent too, I’ll check that out.

While XM2 I believe sacrifice performance for comfort.

I'm not sure if it's a good idea to have UHP at one end and Touring at the other end.

Who says PS4 is for race track driving? PS4 is still just daily drive street tires, just a very good one, but it's still not race track tires.

UC6 is low end model from Continental, not recommended especially combined with PS4 at the front already.

Hankook V12E2 is a good choice but it's not available in 205/50/16. Or do you mean the V2C2? If V2C2 then it's mid performance model, so not a good match with your existing PS4.

For your size not many good choices. Maybe can try the new Toyo TR1, around 240-250/pc.

My next point is.... there's no such thing as Budget Performance because 'Budget' & 'Performance' doesn't goes well together. They HATE each other.
If you want Performance.... you can forget about Budget
If you want Budget.... you can kiss Performance good bye....

Well the V12E2 is kinda budget UHP tire but not quite PS4 level and not many other which offers similar performance at such price level.

Nevertheless.... I really hope people will change their mindset about Performance tire.... Having Performance tire doesn't mean that you can & have to drive fast in corner & etc. I prefer to think of Performance tire offered you more in terms of safety because it has better grip... better breaking distance & etc. All these give you better safety margin compared to those normal tire out there. The ability to stop the car (in emergency situation) even in a few feet makes a HUGE difference.

The amount of money that you save from getting a budget tire.... Is it really worth it to the safety of the people in the car? The life of your family members & love one? You'll be the judge of that...

I'm not here to discourage people in getting budget tire.... I just want people to understand the 'importance' of tire and what is their role. They are the most importance component on a car because that is what in between your car & the road.

That I absolutely agree and I have been saying the exact same thing to those who try to be a cheap skate on tires, especially to those who are proven to actually able to spend so much in cars, wheels etc2.

IMO, I don't think it will be terrible as tyre magazines such as Auto Bild test them all as summer tyres regardless of "Performance or Touring" label. They usually consider individual aspects such as wet braking , dry braking and comfort.

Correct, I meant V2C2. Why cannot not mix and match?

Braking is mostly done by front tyres unless you do emergency brake using handbrake. Though traction will be better on front. I'm not sure how this will impact handling.

That's not correct. Some company purposely make create product range to amass market share. Example is Continental.

Example:
Continental SportContact 6 - MP tyre (high-end) (18-24")
Continental MC6 - UHP tyre (high/mid-end) (16-20")
Viking PT6 (own by Continental) - HP tyre (mid/low-end) (15-20")
Sportiva Performance (own by Contiental) - HP tyre (low-end) (15-19")

As you can see above, all are market as "Performance" tyres but the more $$$ you spent, the better product you will get. So in the in it depends on your budget.

As for my case I consider PS4 (RM400) to be the highest-end for my size (205/50R16). From my research its seems other tyres which required less budget also worth to take note such as:
Bridgestone RE003 (RM325)
Yokohama Fleva V701 (RM285)
GY F1D5 (RM280)
Toyo TR1 (RM250)
Hankook V2C2 (RM250)
Viking PT6 (RM250)

Continental UC6 (RM300) (claimed as hybrid tyre by Continental)

Also there's an option to go down to 195/50R16 size that will have more Touring tyre options such as Turanza, ATM2, XM2+, etc.

V2C2 is much lower performance capability than PS4. So if you mix them together, this setup would alter a bit the handling balance of the car. So if you put the V2C2 at the rear, the grip will be lesser compared to the PS4 at the front hence you may experience a tendency to oversteer. Vice versa if you put the V2C2 at the front where you may get tendency for even more understeer. This altering of the balance can be even more pronounced in the wet, making it more dangerous especially if you put the better tires af the front. Of course still can use this kind of mix but not really recommended. If you mix and match with closer/more similar performance tires (for example PS4 and V12E2) then change in balance will be less.

As for budget performance, manufacturers can claim certain models to be high performance but in reality they might not live up to it, so it's just marketing ploy. Many of these so called high performance tires from low end brands even loose to mid range performance tires of top brands. So be mindful when considering tires from low end brands, don't just believe what they claim to be.

haha i know your feeling, i used to have PS3 during early year 2016, RM470 per donut.. however no doubts on its performance, both wet and dry. and also its still working well now early year 2021 after 50K km. stay away from Hankook, last time i used 4 years plus then the tyre started to have cracks line even though there are still many threats.

Which Hankook? I am on my second d set of V12E2 and no such issues. PS3/4 though had a lot of chipping when driven hard, more so than others eventhough performance still good in such condition.

Its pretty normal to have chipping & minor cracking on the tires (especially those tire more than 3 years & above) due to the road tarmac condition and the hot weather in Malaysia..... sad.gif

But PS3/4 and also F1D5 are much worse. Continental CSC/ECS, F1A2, RE003, V12E2 are much less.
